Descriptive Complexity of Deterministic Polylogarithmic Time and Space
We propose logical characterizations of problems solvable in deterministic
polylogarithmic time (PolylogTime) and polylogarithmic space (PolylogSpace). We
introduce a novel two-sorted logic that separates the elements of the input
domain from the bit positions needed to address these elements. We prove that
the inflationary and partial fixed point vartiants of this logic capture
PolylogTime and PolylogSpace, respectively. In the course of proving that our
logic indeed captures PolylogTime on finite ordered structures, we introduce a
variant of random-access Turing machines that can access the relations and
functions of a structure directly. We investigate whether an explicit predicate
for the ordering of the domain is needed in our PolylogTime logic. Finally, we
present the open problem of finding an exact characterization of

The Atlantic Ocean at the last glacial maximum: 1. Objective mapping of the GLAMAP sea-surface conditions
Recent efforts of the German paleoceanographic community have resulted in a unique data set of reconstructed sea-surface temperature for the Atlantic Ocean during the Last Glacial Maximum, plus estimates for the extents of glacial sea ice. Unlike prior attempts, the contributing research groups based their data on a common definition of the Last Glacial Maximum chronozone and used the same modern reference data for calibrating the different transfer techniques. Furthermore, the number of processed sediment cores was vastly increased. Thus the new data is a significant advance not only with respect to quality, but also to quantity. We integrate these new data and provide monthly data sets of global sea-surface temperature and ice cover, objectively interpolated onto a regular 1°x1° grid, suitable for forcing or validating numerical ocean and atmosphere models. This set is compared to an existing subjective interpolation of the same base data, in part by employing an ocean circulation model. For the latter purpose, we reconstruct sea surface salinity from the new temperature data and the available oxygen isotope measurements
On acceptance conditions for membrane systems: characterisations of L and NL
In this paper we investigate the affect of various acceptance conditions on
recogniser membrane systems without dissolution. We demonstrate that two
particular acceptance conditions (one easier to program, the other easier to
prove correctness) both characterise the same complexity class, NL. We also
find that by restricting the acceptance conditions we obtain a characterisation
of L. We obtain these results by investigating the connectivity properties of
dependency graphs that model membrane system computations

Reduced admixture of North Atlantic Deep Water to the deep central South Pacific during the last two glacial periods

The South Pacific is a sensitive location for the variability of the global oceanic thermohaline circulation given that deep waters from the Atlantic Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and the Pacific basin are exchanged. Here we reconstruct the deep-water circulation of the central South Pacific for the last two glacial cycles (from 240,000 years ago to the Holocene) based on radiogenic neodymium (Nd) and lead (Pb) isotope records complemented by benthic stable carbon data obtained from two sediment cores located on the flanks of the East Pacific Rise. The records show small but consistent glacial/interglacial changes in all three isotopic systems with interglacial average values of -5.8 and 18.757 for εNd and 206Pb/204Pb, respectively, whereas glacial averages are -5.3 and 18.744. Comparison of this variability of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) to previously published records along the pathway of the global thermohaline circulation is consistent with reduced admixture of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) to CDW during cold stages. The absolute values and amplitudes of the benthic δ13C variations are essentially indistinguishable from other records of the Southern Hemisphere and confirm that the low central South Pacific sedimentation rates did not result in a significant reduction of the amplitude of any of the measured proxies. In addition, the combined detrital Nd and strontium (87Sr/86Sr) isotope signatures imply that Australian and New Zealand dust has remained the principal contributor of lithogenic material to the central South Pacific
Apparatus and/or method for recognizing printed data in an image
A system for recognizing and locating printed data of a known spatial characteristic in an image is described. A digital matched filter is used to identify the presence of the printed data via an auto correlation between the filter coefficients and the printed data. When an auto correlation is identified, approximate areas are selected and further processing is undertaken only within such areas
