Synthesis of azulene-substituted benzofurans and isocoumarins via intramolecular cyclization of 1-ethynylazulenes, and their structural and optical properties
First published: 08 Dec 2017The preparation of azulene-substituted benzofurans and isocoumarins was established by two types of intramolecular cyclization reaction of 1-ethynylazulenes. 2-(1-Azulenyl)- and 2,3-bis(1-azulenyl)benzofurans were prepared by the palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of 1-iodoazulenes with 2-ethynylphenol and that of 1-ethynylazulenes with 2-iodophenol under Sonogashira-Hagihara reaction conditions following the intramolecular nucleophilic addition of the oxygen nucleophile to the presumed 1-arylethynylazulenes. In contrast, 1-(phenylethynyl)azulenes bearing an o-methoxycarbonyl function on the substituted phenyl moiety exhibited intramolecular cyclization either in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid or N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) to afford azulene-substituted isocoumarins and 4-iodoisocoumarins, and the structures were clarified by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Grassmannian flows and applications to nonlinear partial differential equations
We show how solutions to a large class of partial differential equations with
nonlocal Riccati-type nonlinearities can be generated from the corresponding
linearized equations, from arbitrary initial data. It is well known that
evolutionary matrix Riccati equations can be generated by projecting linear
evolutionary flows on a Stiefel manifold onto a coordinate chart of the
underlying Grassmann manifold. Our method relies on extending this idea to the
infinite dimensional case. The key is an integral equation analogous to the
Marchenko equation in integrable systems, that represents the coodinate chart
map. We show explicitly how to generate such solutions to scalar partial
differential equations of arbitrary order with nonlocal quadratic
nonlinearities using our approach. We provide numerical simulations that
demonstrate the generation of solutions to
Fisher--Kolmogorov--Petrovskii--Piskunov equations with nonlocal
nonlinearities. We also indicate how the method might extend to more general

Protection of rat renal vitamin E levels by ischemic-preconditioning
BACKGROUND: During renal transplantation, the kidney remains without blood flow for a period of time. The following reperfusion of this ischemic kidney causes functional and structural injury. Formation of oxygen-derived free radicals (OFR) and subsequent lipid peroxidation (LP) has been implicated as the causative factors of these injuries. Vitamin E is known to be the main endogenous antioxidant that stabilizes cell membranes by interfering with LP. The present study was designed to examine the role of ischemic-preconditioning (repeated brief periods of ischemia, IPC) in prevention of renal injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion (IR) in rats. METHODS: IPC included sequential clamping of the right renal artery for 5 min and release of the clamp for another 5 min for a 3 cycles. IR was induced by 30 min ischemia followed by 10 min reperfusion. Four groups of male rats were used: Control, IPC, IR and IPC-IR. Vitamin E, an endogenous antioxidant and as an index of LP, was measured by HPLC and UV detection in renal venous plasma and tissue. Renal function was assessed by serum creatinine and BUN levels. Renal damage was assessed in sections stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin. RESULTS: In the IR group, there was a significant decrease in vitamin E in plasma and tissue compared to a control group (p,0.05). In the IPC-IR group, vitamin E concentration was significantly higher than in the IR group (p,0.01). The results showed that 30 min ischemia in the IR group significantly (p,0.05) reduced renal function demonstrated by an increase in serum creatinine levels as compared with the control group. These results in the IPC group also showed a significant difference with the IR group but no significant difference in serum BUN and creatinine between IR and IPC-IR group were detected. Histological evaluation showed no structural damage in the IPC group and an improvement in the IPC-IR group compared to IR alone. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, IPC preserved vitamin E levels, but it could not markedly improve renal function in the early phase (1–2 h) of reperfusion. IPC may be a useful method for antioxidant preservation in organ transplantation
The Plant Organelles Database 2 (PODB2): An Updated Resource Containing Movie Data of Plant Organelle Dynamics
The Plant Organelles Database (PODB) was launched in 2006 and provides imaging data of plant organelles, protocols for plant organelle research and external links to relevant websites. To provide comprehensive information on plant organelle dynamics and accommodate movie files that contain time-lapse images and 3D structure rotations, PODB was updated to the next version, PODB2 (http://podb.nibb.ac.jp/Organellome). PODB2 contains movie data submitted directly by plant researchers and can be freely downloaded. Through this organelle movie database, users can examine the dynamics of organelles of interest, including their movement, division, subcellular positioning and behavior, in response to external stimuli. In addition, the user interface for access and submission has been enhanced. PODB2 contains all of the information included in PODB, and the volume of data and protocols deposited in the PODB2 continues to grow steadily. Moreover, a new website, Plant Organelles World (http://podb.nibb.ac.jp/Organellome/PODBworld/en/index.html), which is based on PODB2, was recently launched as an educational tool to engage members of the non-scientific community such as students and school teachers. Plant Organelles World is written in layman's terms, and technical terms were avoided where possible. We would appreciate contributions of data from all plant researchers to enhance the usefulness of PODB2 and Plant Organelles World
Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy in Lambda Hypernuclei
The present status of hypernuclear gamma-ray spectroscopy with Hyperball is
summarized. We observed two gamma transitions of 16-Lambda-O(1- -> 1-,0-) and
obtained the strength of the Lambda-N tensor force. In 10B(K-,pi- gamma) data,
we did not observe the spin-flip M1 transition of 10-Lambda-B(2- -> 1-), but
gamma rays from hyperfragments such as 7-Lambda-Li(7/2+ -> 5/2+) and
9-Lambda-Be(3/2+ ->1/2+) were observed. In 11B(pi+,K+ gamma) data, we observed
six gamma transitions of 11_Lambda-B. We also attempted an inclusive gamma-ray

Search for Theta+ via K+p -> pi+X reaction with a 1.2 GeV/c K+ beam
The Theta+ was searched for via the K+p -> pi+X reaction using the 1.2 GeV/c
K+ beam at the K6 beam line of the KEK-PS 12 GeV Proton Synchrotron. In the
missing mass spectrum of the K+p -> pi+X reaction, no clear peak structure was
observed. Therefore a 90 % C.L. upper limit of 3.5 ub/sr was derived for the
differential cross section averaged over 2degree to 22degree in the laboratory
frame of the K+p -> pi+Theta+ reaction. This upper limit is much smaller than
the theoretical calculation for the t-channel process where a K0* is exchanged.
From the present result, either the t-channel process is excluded or the
coupling constant of g_{K*N\Theta} is quite small.Comment: 11pages, 13figure
On the origin and evolution of the asteroid Ryugu: A comprehensive geochemical perspective
Presented here are the observations and interpretations from a comprehensive analysis of 16 representative particles returned from the C-type asteroid Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 mission. On average Ryugu particles consist of 50% phyllosilicate matrix, 41% porosity and 9% minor phases, including organic matter. The abundances of 70 elements from the particles are in close agreement with those of CI chondrites. Bulk Ryugu particles show higher δ18O, Δ17O, and ε54Cr values than CI chondrites. As such, Ryugu sampled the most primitive and least-thermally processed protosolar nebula reservoirs. Such a finding is consistent with multi-scale H-C-N isotopic compositions that are compatible with an origin for Ryugu organic matter within both the protosolar nebula and the interstellar medium. The analytical data obtained here, suggests that complex soluble organic matter formed during aqueous alteration on the Ryugu progenitor planetesimal (several 10’s of km), <2.6 Myr after CAI formation. Subsequently, the Ryugu progenitor planetesimal was fragmented and evolved into the current asteroid Ryugu through sublimation
Larval pufferfish protected by maternal tetrodotoxin
Marine pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin (TTX), an extremely potent neurotoxin. All species of the genus Takifugu accumulate TTX in the liver and ovaries, although the tissue(s) in which it is localized can differ among species. TTX is the major defense strategy the pufferfish appears to use against predators. TTX is also used as a male-attracting pheromone during spawning. Here we demonstrate an additional (and unexpected) use of maternal TTX in the early larval stages of the Takifugu pufferfish. Predation experiments demonstrated that juveniles of all the species of fish used as predators ingested pufferfish larvae, but spat them out promptly. Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MSMS) analysis revealed that the pufferfish larvae contain a small quantity of TTX, which is not enough to be lethal to the predators. Immunohistochemical analysis with anti-TTX monoclonal antibody revealed that the TTX is primarily localized in the body surface of the larvae as a layer of protection. Our study showed the female parent of the Takifugu pufferfish vertically transfers TTX to the larvae through its accumulation in the ovaries, and subsequent localization on the body surface of the larvae
