High-pT hadron production and triggered particle correlations

    Get PDF
The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider has performed measurements of high transverse momentum particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. High-pT hadrons are generated from hard parton scatterings early in the collision. The outgoing partons probe the surrounded hot and dense matter through interactions. Recent results on high-pT inclusive particle production and leading particle correlations in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV are reviewed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. High transverse momentum inclusive neutral pion production in d+Au collisions at RHIC

Preliminary results are presented on high-pT inclusive neutral pion production in d+Au collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 200 GeV in the pseudo-rapidity range 0 gamma, gamma are detected in the Barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the STAR experiment at RHIC. The analysis procedure is described in detail and the results are found to be in good agreement with earlier STAR findings and with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, poster proceedings of Quark Matter conference, Budapest (Hungary), 4-9 August 200

    Canonical aspects of strangeness enhancement

Strangeness enhancement (SE) in heavy ion collisions can be understood in the statistical model on the basis of canonical suppression. In this formulation,SE is a consequence of the transition from canonical to the asymptotic grand canonical limit and is predicted to be a decreasing function of collision energy. This model predictions are consistent with the recent NA49 data on Λ\Lambda enhancement at plab=40,80,158p_{lab}=40, 80, 158 GeV.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Neutral pion production in d-Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

In this paper, preliminary results are presented on high-pTp_T inclusive neutral pion measurements in d-Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV in the pseudo-rapidity range 0<η<10<\eta<1. The photons of the decay pi0γγpi^0\to\gamma\gamma are detected in the Barrel Electromagnetic Calorimeter of the STAR experiment at RHIC. The analysis of this first BEMC hadron measurement is described in detail. The results are compared to earlier RHIC findings. Furthermore, the obtained π0\pi^{0} invariant differential cross sections show good agreement with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations.Comment: Hard Probes proceedings, 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Eur. Apparatus and method for suppressing sound in a gas turbine engine powerplant

A method and apparatus for suppressing jet noise in a gas turbine engine powerplant 10 is disclosed. Various construction details are developed for providing sound suppression at sea level take-off operative conditions and not providing sound suppression at cruise operative conditions. In one embodiment, the powerplant 10 has a lobed mixer 152 between a primary flowpath 44 and a second flowpath 46, a diffusion region downstream of the lobed mixer region (first mixing region 76), and a deployable ejector/mixer 176 in the diffusion region which forms a second mixing region 78 having a diffusion flowpath 72 downstream of the ejector/mixer and sound absorbing structure 18 bounding the flowpath throughout the diffusion region. The method includes deploying the ejector/mixer 176 at take-off and stowing the ejector/mixer at cruise

Correlations of Heavy Quarks Produced at Large Hadron Collider

We study the correlations of heavy quarks produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions and find them to be quite sensitive to the effects of the medium and the production mechanisms. In order to put this on a quantitative footing, as a first step, we analyze the azimuthal, transverse momentum, and rapidity correlations of heavy quark-anti quark (QQQ\overline{Q}) pairs in pppp collisions at O\cal{O}(αs3\alpha_{s}^{3}). This sets the stage for the identification and study of medium modification of similar correlations in relativistic collision of heavy nuclei at the Large Hadron Collider. Next we study the additional production of charm quarks in heavy ion collisions due to multiple scatterings, {\it viz.}, jet-jet collisions, jet-thermal collisions, and thermal interactions. We find that these give rise to azimuthal correlations which are quite different from those arising from prompt initial production at leading order and at next to leading order.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures. Strange Particles from NEXUS 3

After discussing conceptual problems with the conventional string model, we present a new approach, based on a theoretically consistent multiple scattering formalism. First results for strange particle production in proton-proton scattering at 158 GeV and at 200 GeV (cms) are discussed.Comment: invited talk, given at the Strange Quark Matter Conference, Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, March 12-17, 200

Public Relations Work to Increase Attainability Relating to EMail-Communication

The mere allotment of an e-mail address does in no way ensure answering quotas, which could be called sufficient to dependably hand out important information via roundmail. A loss of accessibility through e-mail addresses already provided by the university can be due to various technical problems and personal deficiencies of motivation. Students in particular often use external providers and are often also not on familiar terms with the use of consistent personal e-mail archives, POP-accounts, Web-Mail-Portals and the use of forewarding functions. Special email-courses are being offered within regular further training for staff and students
