Identification and generation of new germplasms in barley with increased tolerance to waterlogging

The ability to maintain high yields for barley production in Ireland is crucial for the indigenous brewing industry. However, high yields are threatened by global climate change, as Ireland is predicted to have increased flooding events. In consequence, the identification and development of barley varieties that are more tolerant to waterlogging has become an important research focus. The N-end rule protein degradation pathway has been shown to play an important role in the response of plants to flooding in Arabidopsis thaliana. Based on sequence similarities, N-end rule components were identified in barley and used as targets to develop new cultivars with increased waterlogging tolerance. Also, barley varieties that are part of AGOUEB population were tested for their waterlogging tolerance. Gene expression together with physiological parameters such as plant height, tiller number, chlorophyll content and root architecture were assessed in order to select varieties that are more tolerant to waterloggin

An analysis of Romania's short-run sovereign rating determinants

    Get PDF
For most European Union countries the government expenditure exceeds government revenue which could lead in the long run to an increase in the government debt to GDP ratio. Considering the distortions generated by the financial and economic crisis, followed by the debt crisis, both local and international investors are more prudent when planning in lending money to sovereigns. The sovereign rating is probably one of the most important aspects which investors carefully analyze before they decide to purchase government bonds or Treasury bills. This paper focuses on Romania's short-run sovereign rating determinants according to the specific methodology of Romania's Export-Import Bank (EximBank). The results reveal that rating is Bb - payment difficulties and insignificant losses being possible

Difficulties in Romania's public pension system

Most European Union countries are facing with major problems regarding their public pension systems. Romania has large difficulties in its public pension system, of which we consider the most important is the large number of beneficiaries and the small number of contributors, that determine a huge social insurance budget deficit. The development of private pensions represents an opportunity to enhance the pensioners' living standard. This paper focuses on revealing the difficulties in the Romania's public pension system and making recommendations regarding the improvement of the system

Ubiquitylation in plants: signaling hub for the integration of environmental signals

    Get PDF
A fundamental question in biology is how organisms integrate the plethora of environmental cues that they perceive to trigger a co-ordinated response. The regulation of protein stability, which is largely mediated by the ubiquitin–proteasome system in eukaryotes, plays a pivotal role in these processes. Due to their sessile lifestyle and the need to respond rapidly to a multitude of environmental factors, plants are thought to be especially dependent on proteolysis to regulate cellular processes. In this review, we present the complexity of the ubiquitin system in plants, and discuss the relevance of the proteolytic and non-proteolytic roles of this system in the regulation and co-ordination of plant responses to environmental signals. We also discuss the role of the ubiquitin system as a key regulator of plant signaling pathways. We focus more specifically on the functions of E3 ligases as regulators of the jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and ethylene hormone signaling pathways that play important roles to mount a co-ordinated response to multiple environmental stresses. We also provide examples of new players in this field that appear to integrate different cues and signaling pathway

The role of rating agencies in international financial market

    Get PDF
In the context of financial markets globalization, the role of rating agencies and credit ratings expanded sharply. Standard & Poor’s awarded in the late 70’s ratings only for 12 countries and currently it assigned ratings for 129 countries. Global rating agencies Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch publish long term sovereign ratings and short term sovereign ratings. The role of sovereign ratings is the decrease of informational asymmetry between borrowers (countries) – acting as issuers and lenders – acting as investors. In this paper I will analyse sovereign rating definition and I will explain the importance of rating agencies

The Serine/Threonine Protein Kinase (Akt)/ Protein Kinase B (PkB) Signaling Pathway in Breast Cancer

    Get PDF
According to statistical data published in 2019, breast cancer is among the leading causes of death in women worldwide. The serine/threonine kinase (AKT) or protein kinase B (PkB) signaling pathway is activated by phosphorylation processes, which further is associated with cell growth, proliferation, and survival, but also with activation of glucose metabolism. Mutations of the AKT signaling pathway components (especially PI3KCA and PTEN) have been observed in breast cancer patients, which are associated with resistance to hormonal treatment. Many clinical trials are testing the effect of AKT inhibition in order to block the growth and proliferation of breast cancer cells. The purpose of this review is to present the incidence of this neoplastic disease, to describe AKT signaling pathways activation, mutations that occur at its level, and inhibitors that can block this protein kinase

BIG enhances Arg/N-degron pathway-mediated protein degradation to regulate Arabidopsis hypoxia responses and suberin deposition

BIG/DARK OVEREXPRESSION OF CAB1/TRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESPONSE3 is a 0.5-MDa protein associated with multiple functions in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) signalling and development. However, the biochemical functions of BIG are unknown. We investigated a role for BIG in the Arg/N-degron pathways, in which substrate protein fate is influenced by the N-terminal (Nt) residue. We crossed a big loss-of-function allele to two N-degron pathway E3 ligase mutants, proteolysis6 (prt6) and prt1, and examined the stability of protein substrates. Stability of model substrates was enhanced in prt6-1 big-2 and prt1-1 big-2 relative to the respective single mutants and the abundance of the PRT6 physiological substrates, HYPOXIA-RESPONSIVE ERF2 (HRE2) and VERNALIZATION2 (VRN2) was similarly increased in prt6 big double mutants. Hypoxia marker expression was enhanced in prt6 big double mutants; this constitutive response required arginyltransferase activity and RAP-type ERFVII transcription factors. Transcriptomic analysis of roots not only demonstrated increased expression of multiple hypoxia-responsive genes in the double mutant relative to prt6, but also revealed other roles for PRT6 and BIG, including regulation of suberin deposition through both ERFVII-dependent and independent mechanisms, respectively. Our results show that BIG acts together with PRT6 to regulate the hypoxia response and broader processes in Arabidopsis

On the fairness and the redistributive effects of PIT in Central and Eastern European countries

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to investigate the fairness and the redistributive effects of personal income tax (PIT) in seven Central and Eastern European countries, namely: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania. Following Kakwani and Lambert (1998) methodology, we test tax equity and progressivity. We study the asymmetry of salary income distribution in order to examine the horizontal equity among individuals in the same group. We calculate the Gini coefficients in order to investigate the redistributive effects of PIT regulatory frameworks. We find that tax equity is fulfilled by all countries. However, PIT regulations does not allow for strong progressivity and for redistributive effects
