Study on Repetitional Consolidation of Clay
The actual phenomena for settlements due to repetitional consolidation of the clay layers are observed frequently, but there remains a great number of unsolved problems in the present situation. In this paper the authors propose an approximate method for calculating the amount of consolidation when the repetitional, uniformly distributed surcharge is applied on a saturated clay layer. By means of this method they analized some results of experimental tests using a triaxial apparatus. Although in this approximate method some simplified conditions are assumed in order to facilitate analysis, the test results obtained by a series of triaxial consolidation tests for saturated clay specimens are in considerably good agreement with those of the numerical analysis
Pseudoaneurysm of Lumbar Artery following a Vertebral Biopsy: A Case Report
A 74-year-old man developed a severe low back pain and a fever. In the initial examinations, a collapse of the L5 anterosuperior vertebral body and narrowing of the L4/5 disc space were identified on radiographs, and the laboratory data showed inflammatory results. A computed tomography (CT) and a magnetic resonance imaging showed collapse of L5. A needle biopsy was performed to make a diagnosis; however, an abdominal pain and a hypotension appeared after the biopsy. An abdominal CT showed a hematoma in the retroperitoneal space, and an angiography revealed a left fourth lumbar artery pseudoaneurysm. The pseudoaneurysm was treated with transcatheter placement of microcoils. Although haemorrhagic complications following needle biopsy are very rare, patients with large amounts of vertebral destruction may have unusual anatomical positions of the lumber artery. Therefore, surgeons should be aware of the possibility of lumbar artery injury during a needle biopsy and take care of prebiopsy plans

Formation of Superoxide Anion during Ferrous Ion-Induced Decomposition of Linoleic Acid Hydroperoxide under Aerobic Conditions
金沢大学医薬保健研究域医学系We studied the mechanism of formation of oxygen radicals during ferrous ion-induced decomposition of linoleic acid hydroperoxide using the spin trapping and chemiluminescence methods. The formation of the superoxide anion (O2.-) was verified in the present study. The hydroxyl radical is also generated through Fenton type decomposition of hydrogen peroxide produced on disproportionation of O2.-. A carbon-centered radical was detected using 5-(diethoxyphosphoryl)-5-methyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DEPMPO) as a spin trap. Alkoxyl radical formation is essential for the conversion of linoleic acid hydroperoxide into the peroxyl radical by ferrous ion. It is likely that the alkoxyl radical [R1CH(O.)R2] is converted into the hydroxylcarbon radical [R1C.(OH)R2] in water, and that this carbon radical reacts with oxygen to give the α-hydroxyperoxyl radical [R1R2C(OH)OO.], which decomposes into the carbocation [R1C+(OH)R 2] and O2.-
A novel transgenic chimaeric mouse system for the rapid functional evaluation of genes encoding secreted proteins
A major challenge of the post-genomic era is the functional characterization of anonymous open reading frames (ORFs) identified by the Human Genome Project. In this context, there is a strong requirement for the development of technologies that enhance our ability to analyze gene functions at the level of the whole organism. Here, we describe a rapid and efficient procedure to generate transgenic chimaeric mice that continuously secrete a foreign protein into the systemic circulation. The transgene units were inserted into the genomic site adjacent to the endogenous immunoglobulin (Ig) κ locus by homologous recombination, using a modified mouse embryonic stem (ES) cell line that exhibits a high frequency of homologous recombination at the Igκ region. The resultant ES clones were injected into embryos derived from a B-cell-deficient host strain, thus producing chimaerism-independent, B-cell-specific transgene expression. This feature of the system eliminates the time-consuming breeding typically implemented in standard transgenic strategies and allows for evaluating the effect of ectopic transgene expression directly in the resulting chimaeric mice. To demonstrate the utility of this system we showed high-level protein expression in the sera and severe phenotypes in human EPO (hEPO) and murine thrombopoietin (mTPO) transgenic chimaeras
Gender and coronary artery bypass graft surgery
Background
Traditional and non-traditional risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) are different between men and women. Gender-linked impact of epicardial adipose tissue volume (EATV) in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains unknown.
Methods
Gender-linked impact of EATV, abdominal fat distribution and other traditional ASCVD risk factors were compared in 172 patients (men: 115; women: 57) who underwent CABG or non-coronary valvular surgery (non-CABG).
Results
In men, EATV, EATV index (EATV/body surface area) and the markers of adiposity such as body mass index, waist circumference and visceral fat area were higher in the CABG group than in the non-CABG group. Traditional ASCVD risk factors were also prevalent in the CABG group. In women, EATV and EATV index were higher in the CABG group, but other adiposity markers were comparable between CABG and non-CABG groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that in men, CABG was determined by EATV Index and other ASCVD risk factors including hypertension, dyslipidemia, adiponectin, high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (Corrected R2 = 0.262, p < 0.0001), while in women, type 2 diabetes mellitus is a single strong predictor for CABG, excluding EATV Index (Corrected R2 = 0.266, p = 0.005).
Conclusions
Our study found that multiple risk factors, including epicardial adipose tissue volume and traditional ASCVD factors are determinants for CABG in men, but type 2 diabetes mellitus was the sole determinant in women. Gender-specific disparities in risk factors of CABG prompt us to evaluate new diagnostic and treatment strategies and to seek underlying mechanisms
