Characterization of the Lytic Bacteriophage phiEaP-8 Effective against Both Erwinia amylovora and Erwinia pyrifoliae Causing Severe Diseases in Apple and Pear
Bacteriophages, bacteria-infecting viruses, have been recently reconsidered as a biological control tool for preventing bacterial pathogens. Erwinia amylovora and E. pyrifoliae cause fire blight and black shoot blight disease in apple and pear, respectively. In this study, the bacteriophage phiEaP-8 was isolated from apple orchard soil and could efficiently and specifically kill both E amylovora and E. pyrifoliae. This bacteriophage belongs to the Podoviridae family. Whole genome analysis revealed that phiEaP-8 carries a 75,929 bp genomic DNA with 78 coding sequences and 5 tRNA genes. Genome comparison showed that phiEaP-8 has only 85% identity to known bacteriophages at the DNA level. PhiEaP-8 retained lytic activity up to 50 degrees C, within a pH range from 5 to 10, and under 365 nm UV light. Based on these characteristics, the bacteriophage phiEaP-8 is novel and carries potential to control both E. amylovora and E. pyrifoliae in apple and pear
Intratracheal inoculation of human varicella zoster virus (VZV; MAV strain) vaccine successfully induced VZV IgG antibodies in rhesus monkeys
Background
The objective of this study was to investigate whether the use of live attenuated varicella zoster virus (VZV) MAV vaccination can efficiently induce VZV antibody production in naive rhesus monkeys as an approach to prevent simian varicella virus (SVV) reactivation in animals immunosuppressed for transplantation studies.
Results
Clinically available human VZV vaccine was used to induce the production of anti-VZV antibodies in rhesus monkeys. A vial of the vaccine was subcutaneously injected at 0 week, and the second and third vaccination was performed at 5 and 6 weeks by intratracheal inoculation. The titer of anti-VZV IgG was assessed at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 7 weeks. At 2 weeks, 3/16 were seropositive for VZV IgG. At 6 weeks, 9/16 were shown to be seropositive. At 7 weeks, 16/16 were found to be seropositive.
Conclusions
The VZV vaccine via intratrachael inoculation was shown to induce VZV IgG humoral immunity in rhesus monkeys and may be important immunosuppressed macaques for transplantation studies. Although the humoral immunity produced is an important finding, further studies will be necessary to confirm possible protection and it could protect probably against SVV infection in rhesus monkey. This study was supported by a grant from the Korea Healthcare Technology R&D Project, Ministry for Health & Welfare, Republic of Korea (Project No.HI13C0954), the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant funded by the Korea government (MSIT) (Grant No. NRF-2020R1A2C1004557 to Kim JM), and Cooperative Research Program for Agriculture Science and Technology Development (Project No. PJ01345302) Rural Development Administration, Republic of Korea
Assessment in marine environment for a hypothetic nuclear accident based on the database of tidal harmonic constants
The eleven nuclear power plants in operation, under construction and a well-planned plant in the east coast of China
generally use seawater for reactor cooling. In this study, an oceanic dispersion assessment system based on a database
of tidal harmonic constants is developed. This system can calculate the tidal current without a large computational
cost, and it is possible to calculate real-time predictions of pollu-tant dispersions in the ocean. Calculated amplitudes
and phases have maximum errors of 10% and 20%with observations, respectively. A number of hypothetical
simulations were performed according to vary-ing of the release starting time and duration of pollutant for the six
nuclear sites in China. The developed system requires a computational time of one hour for one month of real-time
forecasting in Linux OS. Thus, it can use to evaluate rapidly the dispersion characteristics of the pollutants
released into the sea from a nuclear accident.European Union FP7 EURATOM project PREPARE 32328
High-fidelity 3D Human Digitization from Single 2K Resolution Images
High-quality 3D human body reconstruction requires high-fidelity and
large-scale training data and appropriate network design that effectively
exploits the high-resolution input images. To tackle these problems, we propose
a simple yet effective 3D human digitization method called 2K2K, which
constructs a large-scale 2K human dataset and infers 3D human models from 2K
resolution images. The proposed method separately recovers the global shape of
a human and its details. The low-resolution depth network predicts the global
structure from a low-resolution image, and the part-wise image-to-normal
network predicts the details of the 3D human body structure. The
high-resolution depth network merges the global 3D shape and the detailed
structures to infer the high-resolution front and back side depth maps.
Finally, an off-the-shelf mesh generator reconstructs the full 3D human model,
which are available at https://github.com/SangHunHan92/2K2K. In addition, we
also provide 2,050 3D human models, including texture maps, 3D joints, and SMPL
parameters for research purposes. In experiments, we demonstrate competitive
performance over the recent works on various datasets.Comment: code page : https://github.com/SangHunHan92/2K2K, Accepted to CVPR

Tribological characteristics of high strength low alloy steel under various environmental conditions
High strength low alloy steel has excellent heat resistance and high strength. As it is commonly used as gun barrel material, a long service life and superior wear resistance are necessary for steel components. Here we investigated the wear characteristics of high strength low alloy steel surfaces under various environmental conditions, using a pin-on-disk wear test. Oxidation and wear debris effects on the coefficient of friction (COF) of the alloy steel were examined under air and argon (Ar) gas flow at atmospheric conditions
