    Nano-droplets deposited in microarrays by femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser-induced forward transfer

    The authors present the deposition of nanoscale droplets of Cr using femtosecond Ti:Sapphire Laser-Induced Forward Transfer. Deposits around 300 nm in diameter, significantly smaller than any previously reported, are obtained from a 30 nm thick source film. Deposit size, morphology, and adhesion to a receiver substrate as functions of applied laser fluence are investigated. We show that deposits can be obtained from previously irradiated areas of the source material film with negligible loss of deposition quality, allowing sub-spot size period microarrays to be produced without the need to move the source film

    Advancing leadership in sport: Time to 'actually' take the blinkers off?

    In a recent article entitled Advancing Leadership in Sport: Time to Take off the Blinkers?’ Cruickshank and Collins presented what they deemed to be a critical analysis of extant leadership research in sport, attempting to establish a rationale for a greater emphasis on both the cognitive and ‘darker’ (i.e., socially undesirable) sides of leadership. The purpose of the present article is to challenge and clarify a number of misrepresentations in the arguments made in the foundation article, and to question some of the resultant recommendations made. Specifically, the present response will focus on Cruickshank and Collins’ (a) lack of specificity regarding the actual ‘dark’ traits they are apparently purporting to be effective leadership traits, (b) the dearth of theoretical and empirical support for their claims relating to the benefits of ‘dark’ leadership (c) misrepresentation of transformational leadership theory, (d) decision to ignore other relevant theoretical frameworks when presenting their arguments, and (e) apparent confirmation bias in the selective use of literature to support their arguments. Leadership research in sport may well benefit from new directions and methodological advancements and on this level we concur with the aims of Cruickshank and Collins’ article. However, we believe their misrepresentations and inappropriate recommendations do little to advance this area of research, and potentially serve to take it backwards not forwards

    Development and initial validation of an indirect measure of transformational leadership integrity

    An indirect measure of transformational leadership integrity was developed across three studies. In Study 1, the transformational leadership integrity implicit association test (TLI-IAT) was developed and tested with 65 leaders across heterogeneous organizational contexts. Study 2 involved 51 coaches from 18 sports. Results from Studies 1 and 2 supported the construct validity of the instrument, providing evidence of the instrument's convergent and discriminant validity. Study 3 involved 32 coaches and 133 players from six sports. Findings supported the criterion validity of the measure, providing evidence for the instrument's predictive validity. In sum, evidence is presented that supports the TLI-IATs construct and criterion validity. As such, the present research has made significant advancements to the transformational leadership integrity literature and provides researchers with an indirect measure of automatic transformational leadership integrity self-attitudes

    0103-72.6: A New Oxygen-Rich Supernova Remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud

    0103−-72.6, the second brightest X-ray supernova remnant (SNR) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), has been observed with the {\it Chandra X-Ray Observatory}. Our {\it Chandra} observation unambiguously resolves the X-ray emission into a nearly complete, remarkably circular shell surrounding bright clumpy emission in the center of the remnant. The observed X-ray spectrum for the central region is evidently dominated by emission from reverse shock-heated metal-rich ejecta. Elemental abundances in this ejecta material are particularly enhanced in oxygen and neon, while less prominent in the heavier elements Si, S, and Fe. We thus propose that 0103−-72.6 is a new ``oxygen-rich'' SNR, making it only the second member of the class in the SMC. The outer shell is the limb-brightened, soft X-ray emission from the swept-up SMC interstellar medium. The presence of O-rich ejecta and the SNR's location within an H{\small II} region attest to a massive star core-collapse origin for 0103−-72.6. The elemental abundance ratios derived from the ejecta suggest an ∼\sim18 M⊙_{\odot} progenitor star.Comment: 6 pages (ApJ emulator format), including 5 figures and 2 tables.     MultiShape: A Spectral Element Method, with Applications to Dynamic Density Functional Theory and PDE-Constrained Optimization

    A numerical framework is developed to solve various types of PDEs on complicated domains, including steady and time-dependent, non-linear and non-local PDEs, with different boundary conditions that can also include non-linear and non-local terms. This numerical framework, called MultiShape, is a class in Matlab, and the software is open source. We demonstrate that MultiShape is compatible with other numerical methods, such as differential--algebraic equation solvers and optimization algorithms. The numerical implementation is designed to be user-friendly, with most of the set-up and computations done automatically by MultiShape and with intuitive operator definition, notation, and user-interface. Validation tests are presented, before we introduce three examples motivated by applications in Dynamic Density Functional Theory and PDE-constrained optimization, illustrating the versatility of the method

    Traffic Collision Avoidance System: False Injection Viability

    Safety is a simple concept but an abstract task, specifically with aircraft. One critical safety system, the Traffic Collision Avoidance System II (TCAS), protects against mid-air collisions by predicting the course of other aircraft, determining the possibility of collision, and issuing a resolution advisory for avoidance. Previous research to identify vulnerabilities associated with TCAS’s communication processes discovered that a false injection attack presents the most comprehensive risk to veritable trust in TCAS, allowing for a mid-air collision. This research explores the viability of successfully executing a false injection attack against a target aircraft, triggering a resolution advisory. Monetary constraints precluded access to a physical TCAS unit; instead, this research creates a novel program, TCAS-False Injection Environment (TCAS-FIE), that incorporates real-world distributed computing systems to simulate a ground-based attacker scenario which explores how a false injection attack could target an operational aircraft. TCAS-FIEs’ simulation models are defined by parameters to execute tests that mimic real-world TCAS units during Mode S message processing. TCAS-FIE simulations execute tests over applicable ranges (5–30 miles), altitudes (25–45K ft), and bearings standard for real-world TCAS tracking. The comprehensive tests compare altitude, measure range closure rate, and measure signal strength from another aircraft to determine the delta in bearings over time. In the attack scenario, the ground-based adversary falsely injects a spoofed aircraft with characteristics matching a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, targeting an operational Boeing 737-800 aircraft. TCAS-FIE completes 555,000 simulations using the various ranges, altitudes, and bearings. The simulated success rate to trigger a resolution advisory is 32.63%, representing 181,099 successful resolution advisory triggers out of 555,000 total simulations. The results from additional analysis determine the required ranges, altitudes, and bearing parameters to trigger future resolution advisories, yielding a predictive threat map for aircraft false injection attacks. The resulting map provides situational awareness to pilots in the event of a real-world TCAS anomaly
