Collineation group as a subgroup of the symmetric group

Spectral signatures of photosynthesis I: Review of Earth organisms
Why do plants reflect in the green and have a 'red edge' in the red, and
should extrasolar photosynthesis be the same? We provide: 1) a brief review of
how photosynthesis works; 2) an overview of the diversity of photosynthetic
organisms, their light harvesting systems, and environmental ranges; 3) a
synthesis of photosynthetic surface spectral signatures; 4) evolutionary
rationales for photosynthetic surface reflectance spectra with regard to
utilization of photon energy and the planetary light environment. Given the
surface incident photon flux density spectrum and resonance transfer in light
harvesting, we propose some rules with regard to where photosynthetic pigments
will peak in absorbance: a) the wavelength of peak incident photon flux; b) the
longest available wavelength for core antenna or reaction center pigments; and
c) the shortest wavelengths within an atmospheric window for accessory
pigments. That plants absorb less green light may not be an inefficient legacy

Linkage design effect on the reliability of surface-micromachined microengines driving a load
The reliability of microengines is a function of the design of the mechanical linkage used to connect the electrostatic actuator to the drive. The authors have completed a series of reliability stress tests on surface micromachined microengines driving an inertial load. In these experiments, the authors used microengines that had pin mechanisms with guides connecting the drive arms to the electrostatic actuators. Comparing this data to previous results using flexure linkages revealed that the pin linkage design was less reliable. The devices were stressed to failure at eight frequencies, both above and below the measured resonance frequency of the microengine. Significant amounts of wear debris were observed both around the hub and pin joint of the drive gear. Additionally, wear tracks were observed in the area where the moving shuttle rubbed against the guides of the pin linkage. At each frequency, they analyzed the statistical data yielding a lifetime (t{sub 50}) for median cycles to failure and {sigma}, the shape parameter of the distribution. A model was developed to describe the failure data based on fundamental wear mechanisms and forces exhibited in mechanical resonant systems. The comparison to the model will be discussed
Pre- and post-selected ensembles and time-symmetry in quantum mechanics
An expression is proposed for the quantum mechanical state of a pre- and
post-selected ensemble, which is an ensemble determined by the final as well as
the initial state of the quantum systems involved. It is shown that the
probabilities calculated from the proposed state agree with previous
expressions, for cases where they both apply. The same probabilities are found
when they are calculated in the forward- or reverse-time directions. This work
was prompted by several problems raised by Shimony recently in relation to the

Effects of Methylene Blue and Polyethelene Glycol on Facial Nerve Axotomy Recovery
poster abstractInjury and disease are common factors affecting peripheral nerves and can lead to loss of function. Recovery time after an injury is slow and not very efficient in humans. Treatment methods involving methylene blue (MB) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) have shown combinational effects in sciatic nerve axotomies. We are using behavior analysis of eye blink reflex and vibrissae orientation and movement as a measurement of rate of functional recovery. We will have treatment groups of both cut and crush rats. For each group we will be testing the effect of PEG/MB or no treatment control groups. The results of these treatment groups are significant to finding treatment options for clinical use
Technological Devices in the Archives: A Policy Analysis
Doing research in the archive is the cornerstone of humanities scholarship.
Various archives institute policies regarding the use of technological
devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, and cameras in their reading rooms.
Such policies directly affect the scholars as the devices mediate the nature of
their interaction with the source materials in terms of capturing, organizing,
note taking, and record keeping for future use of found materials. In this paper,
we present our analysis of the policies of thirty archives regarding the use of
technology in their reading rooms. This policy analysis, along with data from
interviews of scholars and archivists, is intended to serve as a basis for developing
mobile applications for assisting scholars in their research activities. In this

The Where and How for Reaching Transgender Women and Men Who Have Sex with Men with HIV Prevention Services in Guatemala
This study aims to describe the transgender women and men who have sex with men (MSM) missed through venue-based sampling and illustrate how data on venues can be used to prioritize service delivery. Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) and time-location sampling (TLS) were used concurrently in 2010 for behavioral surveillance among MSM and transgender women in Guatemala City. RDS recruits who did not frequent venues (n = 106) were compared to TLS recruits (n = 609). TLS participants recruited at different types of venues were compared. RDS recruits who did not frequent venues were less educated, less likely to identify as gay, more likely to have concurrent partners and female sexual partners. Participants recruited at NGOs, saunas, hotels, streets and parks had more partners, were more likely to receive money for sex or have concurrent partners. Prevention programs for MSM and transgender women should characterize social venues and people that frequent them and improve service coverage through venues and social networks
Sex work, discrimination, drug use and violence: a pattern for HIV risk among transgender sex workers compared to MSM sex workers and other MSM in Guatemala
The risk of HIV infection is higher among transgender women and cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to the general population due in part to social and contextual factors. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and association of alcohol and drug abuse, discrimination and violence among transgender sex workers compared to cisgender male sex workers and cisgender men who had not received money for sex in Guatemala City. In 2010, transgender women and cisgender men who had had sex with men or transgender women were recruited into a cross-sectional behavioural survey. Among transgender women, 86% received money for sex in the past year. Transgender sex workers were more likely to use drugs and binge drink, three times as likely to be discriminated against and eight times as likely to be forced to have sex compared to non-sex worker men. Male sex workers were twice as likely to use illicit drugs or experience physical violence and six times as likely to experience forced sex compared to non-sex worker men. Transgender and male sex workers would benefit from harm reduction for substance use, violence prevention, response and strategies to mitigate discrimination
Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometer test of the anisotropy of the speed of light
Two optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometers were constructed in an
environment with a temperature stabilization of better than 1 mK per day. One
interferometer with a length of 12 m optical fiber in each arm with the main
direction of the arms perpendicular to each other. Another with a length of 2 m
optical fiber in each arm where the main direction of the arms are parallel as
a control. In each arm 1 m of fiber was wound around a ring made of piezo
material enabling the control of the length of the arms by means of a voltage.
The influence of the temperature on the optical phase difference between the
interferometer arms was measured. It is attributed to the temperature change
induced variation of the interaction region of the optical fiber couplers.
Further, the influence of rotation of the interferometers at the Earth surface
on the observed phase differences was determined. For one interferometer (with
the long and perpendicular arms) it was found that the phase difference depends
on the azimuth of the interferometer. For the other one (with the short and
parallel arms) no relevant dependence on the azimuth has been measured.Comment: Errata: data of interferometers were interchange
Spectral Measures and Generating Series for Nimrep Graphs in Subfactor Theory II: SU(3)
We complete the computation of spectral measures for SU(3) nimrep graphs
arising in subfactor theory, namely the SU(3) ADE graphs associated with SU(3)
modular invariants and the McKay graphs of finite subgroups of SU(3). For the
SU(2) graphs the spectral measures distill onto very special subsets of the
semicircle/circle, whilst for the SU(3) graphs the spectral measures distill
onto very special subsets of the discoid/torus. The theory of nimreps allows us
to compute these measures precisely. We have previously determined spectral
measures for some nimrep graphs arising in subfactor theory, particularly those
associated with all SU(2) modular invariants, all subgroups of SU(2), the
