Statistical Computations with AstroGrid and the Grid
We outline our first steps towards marrying two new and emerging
technologies; the Virtual Observatory (e.g, AstroGrid) and the computational
grid. We discuss the construction of VOTechBroker, which is a modular software
tool designed to abstract the tasks of submission and management of a large
number of computational jobs to a distributed computer system. The broker will
also interact with the AstroGrid workflow and MySpace environments. We present
our planned usage of the VOTechBroker in computing a huge number of n-point
correlation functions from the SDSS, as well as fitting over a million CMBfast
models to the WMAP data.Comment: Invited talk to appear in "Proceedings of PHYSTAT05: Statistical

Three-dimensional propagation effects near the mid-Atlantic Bight shelf break (L)
Significant three-dimensional (3-D) environmental variability exists in the vicinity of the shelf break along the mid-Atlantic Bight. This study examines the influence of azimuthal coupling due to this variability on acoustic propagation in this region. Numerical studies employing a 3-D ray code, a hybrid ray-mode code, and a 3-D parabolic equation model are used to study the significance of azimuthal coupling on various propagation paths. These paths include up-slope, slant-slope, and cross-slope propagation. The numerical analysis suggests that, for the propagation ranges less than 60 km examined, the influence of azimuthal coupling is negligible compared to the inherent uncertainty in the environment itself

Thermo-kinetic mixing for pharmaceutical applications
Compositions and methods for making a pharmaceutical dosage form include making a pharmaceutical composition that includes one or more active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) with one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients by thermokinetic compounding into a composite. Compositions and methods of preprocessing a composite comprising one or more APIs with one or more excipients include thermokinetic compounding, comprising thermokinetic processing the APIs with the excipients into a composite, wherein the composite can be further processed by conventional methods known in the art, such as hot melt extrusion, melt granulation, compression molding, tablet compression, capsule filling, film-coating, or injection molding.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
Seismic reflections from depths of less than two meters
This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from "http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com".Three distinct seismic reflections were obtained from within the upper 2.1 m of flood-plain alluvium in the Arkansas River valley near Great Bend, Kansas. Reflections were observed at depths of 0.63, 1.46, and 2.10 m and confirmed by finite-difference wave-equation modeling. The wavefield was densely sampled by placing geophones at 5-cm intervals, and near-source nonelastic deformation was minimized by using a very small seismic impulse source. For the reflections to be visible within this shallow range, low seismic P-wave velocities (<300 m/s) and high dominant-frequency content of the data (∼450 Hz) were essential. The practical implementation of high-resolution seismic imaging at these depths has the potential to complement ground-penetrating radar (GPR), chiefly in areas where materials exhibiting high electrical conductivity, such as clays, prevent the effective use of GPR. Potential applications of these results exist in hydrogeology and environmental, Quaternary, and neotectonic geology
4. The School Develops
Between 1947 and 1953, when M.P. Catherwood left the deanship to become New York’s industrial commissioner, the ILR School developed into a full fledged enterprise. These pages attempt to capture some of the excitement of this period of the school’s history, which was characterized by vigor, growth, and innovation. Includes: Alumni Recall Their Lives as Students; The Faculty Were Giants; Alice Cook: Lifelong Scholar, Consummate Teacher; Frances Perkins; Visits and Visitors; Tenth Anniversary: Reflection and Change; The Emergence of Departments at ILR; Development of International Programs and Outreach
