IRAS observations of BL Lac objects

    Get PDF
IRAS data was analyzed for 35 BL Lac objects selected from a complete 5 GHz radio sample, using the coadded survey database. The detection rate is 50% with more than 40% detected in more than one band. This compares with only 15% of these sources that are included in the IRAS Point Source Catalog. High luminosity BL Lac objects generally have smooth energy spectra over four or five decades in frequency, consistent with incoherent synchrotron emission from 1 cm to 1 micron. However, many low luminosity BL Lac objects have discontinuous spectra, with a large range in the spectral index at IRAS wavelengths. For BL Lacs with a total luminosity of less than 10 to the 44th power ergs/-s, most of the far infrared energy probably originates from dust heated near the galaxy nucleus. The energy budget shows that the majority of the power per unit bandwidth emerges in the infrared (1 to 100 microns)

Long-term Effects of Tillage on the Retention and Transport of Soil Water

    Get PDF
Quantitative measurements were made of the physical and chemical properties of two virgin prairie soils, Crowley and Jay, that remain in their native Arkansas environments and of similar soils that had been tilled extensively. Comparisons were made of soil properties at several depths. When compared with the tilled soils the virgin soils had higher organic matter contents, saturated hydraulic conductivities and water retained at several applied pressures. Bulk densities and hydraulic resistances were lower in the virgin soils. For the Crowley silt loam, values of pH and elemental contents of the virgin soil were higher than those of the tilled soil. Determinations also were made of the effects of a 14-year addition of winter cover crops on a Dubbs-Dundee soil in continuous cotton production. In general, the winter cover crops tended to increase hydraulic conductivity~. ·porosity and organic matter content. These results indicated that the detrimental effects of long-term tillage on soil hydraulic properties could partially be overcome with the planting of these crops during the winter. However, the rate of improvement in the hydraulic properties was not dramatic

Natural Isoscapes of Louisiana: Stable Isotope Analysis of Oxygen, Carbon, and Strontium

    Get PDF
Stable isotope analysis has been used by archaeologists and anthropologists to better understand time, provenience, and diet of past humans, but the utility of stable isotope analysis in modern humans has not been fully explored. Forensic anthropologists today primarily identify human skeletal remains, and stable isotope analysis of bone may narrow down the possible identities of an individual. Determining the natural variability within the state of Louisiana is the first step in determining whether individuals from different areas of the state are distinguishable from one another. This thesis investigated the natural isotopic variability in Louisiana with respect to oxygen (δ18O), carbon (δ13C), and strontium (ε87Sr) by sampling the bones of white tailed deer throughout the state, as well as two raccoons and one fox. The deer revealed distinct value regions for all three isotopes, which were found to be in agreement with available water data for the state. The two raccoons, fox, and deer in comparison against each other revealed measurable differences between natural and urban fauna of the same region, between omnivores and herbivores of the same environment, and between natural and urban omnivores. These differences provide evidence that modern humans should exhibit values different than the natural environment due to a grocery store diet and allow for the extension of the project to investigate the variability among Louisiana cities. It was also determined that Cascade dish detergent does not inhibit stable isotope analysis of δ18O and δ13C, but more work must be done to understand the interaction of Cascade and ε87Sr
