Public Response to a Catastrophic Southern California Earthquake: A Sociological Perspective

This paper describes a hypothetical scenario of public response to a large regional earthquake on the southern section of the San Andreas Fault. Conclusive social and behavioral science research over decades has established that the behavior of individuals in disaster is, on the whole, controlled, rational, and adaptive, despite popular misperceptions that people who experience a disaster are dependent upon and problematic for organized response agencies. We applied this knowledge to portray the response of people impacted by the earthquake focusing on actions they will take during and immediately following the cessation of the shaking including: immediate response, search and rescue, gaining situational awareness through information seeking, making decisions about evacuation and interacting with organized responders. Our most general conclusion is that the actions of ordinary people in this earthquake scenario comprised the bulk of the initial response effort, particularly in those areas isolated for lengthy periods of time following the earthquake

This thesis presents results on methods used to produce a hard surfaced wood product. The methods involve the parting of the wood fibers on the surface by a special serrating tool, followed by surface impregnation and final curing. The serrations on the wood surface produce an artificial grain upon curing. A preliminary investigation was made to improve the rot-resistance of wood by gaseous treatment. Results of such treatments show some limited success with formaldehyde on yellow poplar and warrant further study. An investigation was made to find a substitute for teak wood used on submarine decking. A number of combinations of woods and impregnating agents were prepared and tested under simulated ocean conditions. The results of those tests indicate that a maple-mahogany laminate, when treated with the proper agent, will compare favorably with teak. The optimum curing conditions of several phenolic resin adhesives are presented as determined by an acetone extracting procedure. The results are presented for an attempt to replace the acetone extraction procedure by an x-ray diffraction method. X-ray diffraction patterns are presented of wood, -cellulose, and a phenolic adhesive. The viscosity characteristics of mixed Cascophen LT-67 phenolic adhesive are given. These viscosity correlations are based on the flow of material through an orifice

    Communication in Crisis

The communication of messages of the impending impact of some natural disaster agent can play a key role in averting natural catastrophe. This article examines the social processes involved in disaster warnings which function to elicit evacuation in such threat situations. These processes and the role of the mass media in forming situational definitions requisite for evacuation are examined in reference to data gathered in Rapid City, South Dakota where on June 9, 1972 a flash flood produced a major disaster.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68175/2/10.1177_009365027500200102.pd

A COMPARATIVE QUALITY CONTROL STUDY OF CETIRIZINE HYDROCHLORIDE 10MG TABLETS ON THE ALBANIAN PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET

Objective: The aim of this study was to carry out a quality control test on a range of different production of cetirizine hydrochloride 10mg tablets and to compare the generic productions with the reference one in order to evaluate if there are any outstanding differences in terms of quality and price. Methods: Various pharmacopeias tests were carried out: weight variation test, disintegration test, dissolution test, as well as other tests such as: setting the diameter, thickness, tensile strength, friability and hardness test. The pharmaceutical equivalents were compared to the reference product in terms of similar dissolution factor (f2) of dissolution profiles and the evaluation of dissolution efficiency (DE). Tablet dissolution was carried out in a multi bath (n=6) dissolution test system (Varian Dissolution Apparatus 2) (50rpm, 37.0±0.5 ºC, bi distillated water 900 ml, pH 7.0). An UV-Vis spectrophotometer (Cary 100, Varian) was used to determine cetirizine concentration at wavelength 230.1 nm. Varian Hardness VK200, Guoming CS-2 friability apparatus and Guoming BJ-2 disintegration apparatus are used for the specific tests. Results: The study showed that all the products met with the standards of pharmacopoeia and that dissolution profiles were significantly the same but, however, there is also a remarkable difference in price. Conclusion: All the productions met the requirements and are within the limits of pharmacopoeia for the presented tests. Cetirizine reference product still sells well on the open pharmaceutical market even though it costs more and regardless of the fact that other generics have practically the same qualities.Â
