Phosducin-like protein (PhLP), a regulator of Gβγ function, interacts with the proteasomal protein SUG1

AbstractPhosducin-like protein (PhLP) and phosducin are highly homologous proteins that interact with the βγ subunits of guanine nucleotide binding proteins. While phosducin has a well-characterized role in retinal signal transduction, PhLP function remains unclear. To further understand the function of PhLP, we have examined other potential protein:protein interactions with PhLP using the yeast two-hybrid system. PhLP was found to interact with a mouse homologue of the yeast SUG1, a subunit of the 26S proteasome which may also indirectly modulate transcription. This interaction was further confirmed by an in vitro binding assay and co-immunoprecipitation of the two proteins in overexpression studies. Inhibition of proteasome function by lactacystin led to accumulation of high molecular weight, ubiquitin-immunoreactive protein precipitated by PhLP antiserum. We suggest that PhLP/SUG1 interaction may target PhLP for proteasomal degradation

Beyond America: Cross-national Context and the Impact of Religious Versus Secular Organizational Membership on Self-rated Health

Studies using data from the United States suggest religious organizational involvement is more beneficial for health than secular organizational involvement. Extending beyond the United States, we assess the relative impacts of religious and secular organizational involvement on self-rated health cross-nationally, accounting for national-level religious context. Analyses of data from 33 predominantly Christian countries from the 2005–2008 World Values Survey reveal that active membership in religious organizations is positively associated with self-rated health. This association’s magnitude is higher than the magnitude of associations between many memberships in secular organizations and health. The positive association between involvement in religious organization and self-rated health is moderated by national levels of religious pluralism such that positive associations are primarily found in nations high in religious diversity. These results replicated in a sample of 21 majority-Christian nations from the 2010–2014 World Values Survey

The Role of Skill Versus Luck in Poker: Evidence from the World Series of Poker

In determining the legality of online poker – a multibillion dollar industry – courts have relied heavily on the issue of whether or not poker is a game of skill. Using newly available data, we analyze that question by examining the performance in the 2010 World Series of Poker of a group of poker players identified as being highly skilled prior to the start of the events. Those players identified a priori as being highly skilled achieved an average return on investment of over 30 percent, compared to a -15 percent for all other players. This large gap in returns is strong evidence in support of the idea that poker is a game of skill.
