Generating, Scaling Up, and Sustaining Partnership Impact: One Tams First Four Years
Landscape-scale collaboration has become an important pathway to manage and steward public lands and natural resources in the United States. To understand the impact of formalized, collaborative efforts, a new partnership called One Tam (onetam.org), based in California's Marin County, was studied in its first four years. Findings from this research include a collection of interdependent, scalable impacts that are presented as the Partnership Impact Model -- highlighting three impact classifications: foundational, operational, and outcome. Partnership Impact Evaluation Guide
Understanding, measuring, and communicating a partnership's "value added" or "impact" is important to successfully optimize collaboration, yet evaluating partnership impact has often been difficult for landscape-scale partnerships and the partnership field in general. This guide is designed to help multi-sector partnerships undertaking long-term, systems-level collaboration to best define, measure, and evaluate impact. The 7 Steps of Partnership Impact Evaluation is presented as a framework to assist these partnerships with the recurring process of conducting impact evaluations. Partnerships are encouraged to use this guide in conjunction with the other elements of the Partnership Impact Model: the 11 Partnership Impacts, Scaling Up Partnership Impact, and the Partnership Impact Roadmap
Creating Order Out of Chaos? Development of a Measure of Perceived Effects of Communication on the Crisis Organizing Process
Organizations are important sources of communication during natural-hazard crises. How members of an organization perceive these communications (e.g., creating confusion, causing disorder, providing clarity, and restoring order) influences response and recovery from such a crisis. Using Chaos Theory as a guiding framework, the authors developed a new instrument measuring the perceived effects of an organization’s communication on crisis-organizing processes. Three distinct studies were conducted to assess the reliability and validity of this new instrument: the “Perceived Effects of Communication on the Crisis-organizing Process (PEC-COP)” scale. This one-factor scale can be used by both scholars and practitioners to assess the effects of an organization’s communication on how people organize (i.e., react and respond) during a crisis. By gaining greater insight into how an organization’s communication is perceived, the organization can better prepare to communicate in ways that promote efficient and effective crisis-organizing processes throughout a natural-hazard crisis. Motor phenotype of LRRK2 G2019S carriers in early-onset Parkinson disease
Objective: To determine the motor phenotype of LRRK2 G2019S mutation carriers. LRRK2 mutation carriers were previously reported to manifest the tremor dominant motor phenotype, which has been associated with slower motor progression and less cognitive impairment compared with the postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD) phenotype. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Setting: Thirteen movement disorders centers. Participants: Nine hundred twenty-five early-onset Parkinson disease cases defined as age at onset younger than 51 years. Main Outcome Measures: LRRK2 mutation status and Parkinson disease motor phenotype: tremor dominant or PIGD. Demographic information, family history of Parkinson disease, and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale score were collected on all participants. DNA samples were genotyped for LRRK2 mutations (G2019S, I2020T, R1441C, and Y1699C). Logistic regression was used to examine associations of G2019S mutation status with motor phenotype adjusting for disease duration, Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, levodopa dose, and family history of Parkinson disease. Results: Thirty-four cases (3.7%) (14 previously reported) were G2019S carriers. No other mutations were found. Carriers were more likely to be Ashkenazi Jewish (55.9% vs 11.9%; P < .001) but did not significantly differ in any other demographic or disease characteristics. Carriers had a lower tremor score (P = .03) and were more likely to have a PIGD phenotype (92.3% vs 58.9%; P = .003). The association of the G2019S mutation with PIGD phenotype remained after controlling for disease duration and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry (odds ratio, 17.7; P < .001). Conclusion: Early-onset Parkinson disease G2019S LRRK2 carriers are more likely to manifest the PIGD phenotype, which may have implications for disease course
Natural Products from the Lithistida: A Review of the Literature since 2000
Lithistid sponges are known to produce a diverse array of compounds ranging from polyketides, cyclic and linear peptides, alkaloids, pigments, lipids, and sterols. A majority of these structurally complex compounds have very potent and interesting biological activities. It has been a decade since a thorough review has been published that summarizes the literature on the natural products reported from this amazing sponge order. This review provides an update on the current taxonomic classification of the Lithistida, describes structures and biological activities of 131 new natural products, and discusses highlights from the total syntheses of 16 compounds from marine sponges of the Order Lithistida providing a compilation of the literature since the last review published in 2002

Practicing collaborative leadership: Demonstrating value through evidence of partnership impact
The 21st century’s dynamic natural and social landscapes include increased wildfire fire intensity, unpredictable weather patterns, and demands for equity and justice. The very scale of these challenges requires new and creative approaches to land protection and stewardship; therefore, many conservation leaders and practitioners are exploring new ways to restore and care for the environment as integrated and interconnected landscapes. Landscape stewardship partnerships and networks have significantly grown over the past two decades to collaborate, innovate, and undertake collective action at varying scales. These adaptive cross-boundary partnerships and networks connect local communities, land- and water-managing agencies, private landowners, scientists, tribes, the non-profit sector, and many others to tackle the challenges we face. Because collaboration requires considerable trust and investment, stakeholders are seeking tools to understand its value and methods for measuring and monitoring its impact. However, there is a shortage of research-based frameworks to evaluate the impact of landscape stewardship partnerships practicing collaborative leadership. In this article, the Partnership Impact Model (a trademark of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy) is introduced as a promising impact assessment framework, with highlights from partnerships and networks that have used it. Readers are encouraged to consider this model to both monitor partnership health and to demonstrate its impact
“Should This Loan be Approved or Denied?”: A Large Dataset with Class Assignment Guidelines
In this article, a large and rich dataset from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and an accompanying assignment designed to teach statistics as an investigative process of decision making are presented. Guidelines for the assignment titled “Should This Loan Be Approved or Denied?,” along with a subset of the larger dataset, are provided. For this case-study assignment, students assume the role of loan officer at a bank and are asked to approve or deny a loan by assessing its risk of default using logistic regression. Since this assignment is designed for introductory business statistic courses, additional methods for more advanced data analysis courses are also suggested
Meeting information needs in a natural hazard: Development of crisis information needs and adequacy for internal stakeholders (CINA-IS) scale
Natural-hazard crises generate much uncertainty among individuals, organizations, and communities. As feelings of uncertainty grow, individuals experience higher levels of stress and negative impacts to their psychological well-being. People desperately seek information and guidance on what to do and expect, along with how to adapt when faced with crises. While crisis-response organizations are key information disseminators, individuals also seek information from non-crisis-response organizations such as places where they work, volunteer, attend school, or worship. As the frequency of natural-hazard crises increases, so do the expectations of non-crisis-response organizations as valuable information sources.However, there is limited research on the information needs of internal stakeholders and the adequacy of the information provided. In this paper, a new reliable and valid scale, Crisis Information Needs and Adequacy for Internal Stakeholders (CINA-IS) is introduced. Three studies to develop and test this scale are described in detail. This 6-item, one-factor scale can be used to assess the adequacy of the information provided during a crisis from the perspective of internal stakeholders. Organizations and those who study them are encouraged to use this scale to improve internal crisis communication. Adequately meeting internal stakeholders' information needs has the potential to help reduce uncertainty and negative psychological impacts on an organizations’ most important asset – its people
