Precision neutron interferometric measurement of the nd coherent neutron scattering length and consequences for models of three-nucleon forces
We have performed the first high precision measurement of the coherent
neutron scattering length of deuterium in a pure sample using neutron
interferometry. We find b_nd = (6.665 +/- 0.004) fm in agreement with the world
average of previous measurements using different techniques, b_nd = (6.6730 +/-
0.0045) fm. We compare the new world average for the nd coherent scattering
length b_nd = (6.669 +/- 0.003) fm to calculations of the doublet and quartet
scattering lengths from several modern nucleon-nucleon potential models with
three-nucleon force (3NF) additions and show that almost all theories are in
serious disagreement with experiment. This comparison is a more stringent test
of the models than past comparisons with the less precisely-determined nuclear
doublet scattering length of a_nd = (0.65 +/- 0.04) fm.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Mesoscale simulations of surfactant dissolution and mesophase formation
The evolution of the contact zone between pure surfactant and solvent has
been studied by mesoscale simulation. It is found that mesophase formation
becomes diffusion controlled and follows the equilibrium phase diagram
adiabatically almost as soon as individual mesophases can be identified,

Topological entropy of a stiff ring polymer and its connection to DNA knots
We discuss the entropy of a circular polymer under a topological constraint.
We call it the {\it topological entropy} of the polymer, in short. A ring
polymer does not change its topology (knot type) under any thermal
fluctuations. Through numerical simulations using some knot invariants, we show
that the topological entropy of a stiff ring polymer with a fixed knot is
described by a scaling formula as a function of the thickness and length of the
circular chain. The result is consistent with the viewpoint that for stiff
polymers such as DNAs, the length and diameter of the chains should play a
central role in their statistical and dynamical properties. Furthermore, we
show that the new formula extends a known theoretical formula for DNA knots.Comment: 14pages,11figure
Domain walls and perturbation theory in high temperature gauge theory: SU(2) in 2+1 dimensions
We study the detailed properties of Z_2 domain walls in the deconfined high
temperature phase of the d=2+1 SU(2) gauge theory. These walls are studied both
by computer simulations of the lattice theory and by one-loop perturbative
calculations. The latter are carried out both in the continuum and on the
lattice. We find that leading order perturbation theory reproduces the detailed
properties of these domain walls remarkably accurately even at temperatures
where the effective dimensionless expansion parameter, g^2/T, is close to
unity. The quantities studied include the surface tension, the action density
profiles, roughening and the electric screening mass. It is only for the last
quantity that we find an exception to the precocious success of perturbation
theory. All this shows that, despite the presence of infrared divergences at
higher orders, high-T perturbation theory can be an accurate calculational

Adiabatic description of nonspherical quantum dot models
Within the effective mass approximation an adiabatic description of
spheroidal and dumbbell quantum dot models in the regime of strong dimensional
quantization is presented using the expansion of the wave function in
appropriate sets of single-parameter basis functions. The comparison is given
and the peculiarities are considered for spectral and optical characteristics
of the models with axially symmetric confining potentials depending on their
geometric size making use of the total sets of exact and adiabatic quantum
numbers in appropriate analytic approximations
Longitudinal study on birthweight and the incidence of endometrial cancer
From 1976 to 2004, we followed 71 751 participants of the Nurses' Health Study and identified 676 invasive endometrial cancer cases. Birthweight, assessed in 1992, was not associated with the incidence of endometrial cancer. No effect modification by menopausal status was observed, but statistical power to detect an interaction was limited
Ab-initio calculation of the electronic and optical excitations in polythiophene: effects of intra- and interchain screening
We present an calculation of the electronic and optical excitations of an
isolated polythiophene chain as well as of bulk polythiophene. We use the GW
approximation for the electronic self-energy and include excitonic effects by
solving the electron-hole Bethe-Salpeter equation. The inclusion of interchain
screening in the case of bulk polythiophene drastically reduces both the
quasi-particle band gap and the exciton binding energies, but the optical gap
is hardly affected. This finding is relevant for conjugated polymers in

Dopant-induced crossover from 1D to 3D charge transport in conjugated polymers
The interplay between inter- and intra-chain charge transport in bulk
polythiophene in the hopping regime has been clarified by studying the
conductivity as a function of frequency (up to 3 THz), temperature and doping
level. We present a model which quantitatively explains the observed crossover
from quasi-one-dimensional transport to three-dimensional hopping conduction
with increasing doping level. At high frequencies the conductivity is dominated
by charge transport on one-dimensional conducting chains.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Constructing transnational solidarity: the role of campaign governance
Our inductive study of two transnational labour solidarity efforts focuses on the role of campaign governance. Specifically, we study contrasting campaign strategies, tactics and coalition structures in campaigns by two global union federations, UNI Global Union and the IUF, contextualized in terms of how these campaigns unfolded in India. Our contribution consists of two arguments. The first is that a degree of internal consistency amongst different campaign elements is important for success, and the second is that a mode of articulation that allows for local concerns in affiliate countries to find voice in global campaigns is more likely to result in concrete gains at the local level
