    Chirality in Bare and Passivated Gold Nanoclusters

    Chiral structures have been found as the lowest-energy isomers of bare (Au28_{28} and Au55)andthiolpassivated(Au_{55}) and thiol-passivated (Au_{28}(SCH3)_{3})_{16}andAu and Au_{38}(SCH_{3})_{24}) gold nanoclusters. The degree of chirality existing in the chiral clusters was calculated using the Hausdorff chirality measure. We found that the index of chirality is higher in the passivated clusters and decreases with the cluster size. These results are consistent with the observed chiroptical activity recently reported for glutahione-passivated gold nanoclusters, and provide theoretical support for the existence of chirality in these novel compounds.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure.     Delta--Excitation and Exchange Corrections for NN--Bremsstrahlung

    The role of the relativistic amplitudes for a number of O(k){\cal O}(k) processes usually neglected in potential model calculations of NN--bremsstrahlung is investigated. In particular, we consider the Δ\Delta--excitation pole contributions related to the one--pion and one--rho exchange and in addition include the exchange contributions induced by the radiative ω,ρπγ\omega,\,\rho \to \pi \gamma decays. The contributions are calculated from relativistic Born amplitudes fitted to Δ\Delta--production and absorption data in the energy range up to 1 GeV and then used to supplement potential model and soft photon calculations for nucleon--nucleon bremsstrahlung. The effects on NNγNN\gamma--observables, although moderate in general, are found to be important in some kinematic domains.Comment: 15 pages in LaTex, using Revtex, 6 figures as uufile'd, compressed Postscript file included, TRIUMF preprint TRI-PP-94-9

    Is my memory an extended notebook?

    Clark and Chalmers' conception of spatially extended memory is under- pinned by an objectified conception of biological memory. To the extent that this can be identified with a ‘storage’ approach to memory, criticisms of it are well known and an alternative approach, perhaps more suited to an enactive account of cognition, might be one which focuses on remembering as a type of action. In the Otto story the objectification of memory is apparent not only in C&C’s characterization of the notebook but also in the notion that Inga’s memory is notebook-like. Insofar as Inga’s practices, or conceptions, of remembering might be notebook-like this should not be taken as evidence of the existence of an internal store, but could instead be the result of prior interaction with notebook-like artifacts
