Arbitrary Ranking of Defeasible Subsumption
In this paper we propose an algorithm that generalises existing procedures for the implementation of defeasible reasoning in the framework of Description Logics (DLs). One of the well-known approaches to defeasible reasoning, the so-called KLM approach, is based on constructing specific rankings of defeasible information, and using these rankings to determine priorities in case of conflicting information. Here we propose a procedure that allows us to input any possible ranking of the defeasible concept inclusions contained in the knowledge base. We analyse and investigate the forms of defeasible reasoning obtained when conclusions drawn are obtained using these rankings

Engineering spin squeezing in a 3D optical lattice with interacting spin-orbit-coupled fermions
One of the most important tasks in modern quantum science is to coherently
control and entangle many-body systems, and to subsequently use these systems
to realize powerful quantum technologies such as quantum-enhanced sensors.
However, many-body entangled states are difficult to prepare and preserve since
internal dynamics and external noise rapidly degrade any useful entanglement.
Here, we introduce a protocol that counterintuitively exploits inhomogeneities,
a typical source of dephasing in a many-body system, in combination with
interactions to generate metrologically useful and robust many-body entangled
states. Motivated by current limitations in state-of-the-art three-dimensional
(3D) optical lattice clocks (OLCs) operating at quantum degeneracy, we use
local interactions in a Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling to achieve a
spin-locking effect. In addition to prolonging inter-particle spin coherence,
spin-locking transforms the dephasing effect of spin-orbit coupling into a
collective spin-squeezing process that can be further enhanced by applying a
modulated drive. Our protocol is fully compatible with state-of-the-art 3D OLC
interrogation schemes and may be used to improve their sensitivity, which is
currently limited by the intrinsic quantum noise of independent atoms. We
demonstrate that even with realistic experimental imperfections, our protocol
may generate -- dB of spin squeezing in second with
-- atoms. This capability allows OLCs to enter a new era of
quantum enhanced sensing using correlated quantum states of driven

Buckling, Crumpling, and Tumbling of Semiflexible Sheets in Simple Shear Flow
As 2D materials such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and 2D
polymers become more prevalent, solution processing and colloidal-state
properties are being exploited to create advanced and functional materials.
However, our understanding of the fundamental behavior of 2D sheets and
membranes in fluid flow is still lacking. In this work, we perform numerical
simulations of athermal semiflexible sheets with hydrodynamic interactions in
shear flow. For sheets initially oriented in the flow-gradient plane, we find
buckling instabilities of different mode numbers that vary with bending
stiffness and can be understood with a quasi-static model of elasticity. For
different initial orientations, chaotic tumbling trajectories are observed.
Notably, we find that sheets fold or crumple before tumbling but do not stretch
again upon applying greater shear, which is in distinct contrast to polymer

Discrete Event Simulation for Decision Modeling in Health Care: Lessons from Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening.
Markov models are often used to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of new healthcare interventions but they are sometimes not flexible enough to allow accurate modeling or investigation of alternative scenarios and policies. A Markov model previously demonstrated that a one-off invitation to screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) for men aged 65 y in the UK and subsequent follow-up of identified AAAs was likely to be highly cost-effective at thresholds commonly adopted in the UK (£20,000 to £30,000 per quality adjusted life-year). However, new evidence has emerged and the decision problem has evolved to include exploration of the circumstances under which AAA screening may be cost-effective, which the Markov model is not easily able to address. A new model to handle this more complex decision problem was needed, and the case of AAA screening thus provides an illustration of the relative merits of Markov models and discrete event simulation (DES) models. An individual-level DES model was built using the R programming language to reflect possible events and pathways of individuals invited to screening v. those not invited. The model was validated against key events and cost-effectiveness, as observed in a large, randomized trial. Different screening protocol scenarios were investigated to demonstrate the flexibility of the DES. The case of AAA screening highlights the benefits of DES, particularly in the context of screening studies
Intrinsic Optical Transition Energies in Carbon Nanotubes
Intrinsic optical transition energies for isolated and individual single wall
carbon nanotubes grown over trenches are measured using tunable resonant Raman
scattering. Previously measured E22_S optical transitions from nanotubes in
surfactants are blue shifted 70-90 meV with respect to our measurements of
nanotubes in air. This large shift in the exciton energy is attributed to a
larger change of the exciton binding energy than the band-gap renormalization
as the surrounding dielectric constant increases.Comment: Due to a mistake, a different paper was submitted as "revised v2".
