    Memory Biases in Left Versus Right Implied Motion

    People remember moving objects as having moved farther along in their path of motion than is actually the case; this is known as representational momentum (RM). Some authors have argued that RM is an internalization of environmental properties such as physical momentum and gravity. Five experiments demonstrated that a similar memory bias could not have been learned from the environment. For right-handed Ss, objects apparently moving to the right engendered a larger memory bias in the direction of motion than did those moving to the left. This effect, clearly not derived from real-world lateral asymmetries, was relatively insensitive to changes in apparent velocity and the type of object used, and it may be confined to objects in the left half of visual space. The left–right effect may be an intrinsic property of the visual operating system, which may in turn have affected certain cultural conventions of left and right in art and other domains.     Advantages of 3D time-of-flight range imaging cameras in machine vision applications

    Machine vision using image processing of traditional intensity images is in wide spread use. In many situations environmental conditions or object colours or shades cannot be controlled, leading to difficulties in correctly processing the images and requiring complicated processing algorithms. Many of these complications can be avoided by using range image data, instead of intensity data. This is because range image data represents the physical properties of object location and shape, practically independently of object colour or shading. The advantages of range image processing are presented, along with three example applications that show how robust machine vision results can be obtained with relatively simple range image processing in real-time applications

    Phonons in a Nanoparticle Mechanically Coupled to a Substrate

    The discrete nature of the vibrational modes of an isolated nanometer-scale solid dramatically modifies its low-energy electron and phonon dynamics from that of a bulk crystal. However, nanocrystals are usually coupled--even if only weakly--to an environment consisting of other nanocrystals, a support matrix, or a solid substrate, and this environmental interaction will modify the vibrational properties at low frequencies. In this paper we investigate the modification of the vibrational modes of an insulating spherical nanoparticle caused by a weak {\it mechanical} coupling to a semi-infinite substrate. The phonons of the bulk substrate act as a bath of harmonic oscillators, and the coupling to this reservoir shifts and broadens the nanoparticle's modes. The vibrational density of states in the nanoparticle is obtained by solving the Dyson equation for the phonon propagator, and we show that environmental interaction is especially important at low frequencies. As a probe of the modified phonon spectrum, we consider nonradiative energy relaxation of a localized electronic impurity state in the nanoparticle, for which good agreement with experiment is found.Comment: 10 pages, Revte

    Food for Thought? A Rejoinder on peer-review and RAE2008 evidence. Accounting Education, December 2011

    This Rejoinder responds to criticisms made by Simon Hussain (2011) about the construction and operation of the Association of Business Schools’ (ABS) Journal Quality Guide. In this paper the broad purposes of journal lists and guides are outlined before an account is given of the long history and multiple forms of these lists, particularly in the field of Accounting. Having described the main features of different types of journal list, the advantages and benefits of the approach adopted in the compilation of the ABS Journal Quality Guide is outlined. The paper then ends by noting that one of the copy editing mistakes identified by Dr Hussain has been rectified, but the remaining concerns about the rating of accounting education and accounting history journals reflects the absence of these titles from journal citation reports and international journal lists. Furthermore, the lower rating of Accounting research in the RAE2008 in comparison with Business and Management research in the same year and Accounting and Finance research in 2001, has more to do with the way in which the Accounting and Finance Panel calibrated and normalised its judgements than with the ratings contained within the ABS guide

    A Guyon's canal ganglion presenting as occupational overuse syndrome: A case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Occupational overuse syndrome (OOS) can present as Guyon's canal syndrome in computer keyboard users. We report a case of Guyon's canal syndrome caused by a ganglion in a computer user that was misdiagnosed as OOS.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 54-year-old female secretary was referred with a six-month history of right little finger weakness and difficulty with adduction. Prior to her referral, she was diagnosed by her general practitioner and physiotherapist with a right ulnar nerve neuropraxia at the level of the Guyon's canal. This was thought to be secondary to computer keyboard use and direct pressure exerted on a wrist support. There was obvious atrophy of the hypothenar eminence and the first dorsal interosseous muscle. Both Froment's and Wartenberg's signs were positive. A nerve conduction study revealed that both the abductor digiti minimi and the first dorsal interosseus muscles showed prolonged motor latency. Ulnar conduction across the right elbow was normal. Ulnar sensory amplitude across the right wrist to the fifth digit was reduced while the dorsal cutaneous nerve response was normal. Magnetic resonance imaging of the right wrist showed a ganglion in Guyon's canal. Decompression of the Guyon's canal was performed and histological examination confirmed a ganglion. The patient's symptoms and signs resolved completely at four-month follow-up.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Clinical history, occupational history and examination alone could potentially lead to misdiagnosis of OOS when a computer user presents with these symptoms and we recommend that nerve conduction or imaging studies be performed.</p

    Making the transition from video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery to chest tube with fibrinolytics for empyema in children: Any change in outcomes?

    Background: There is ongoing variation in the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and chest tube with fibrinolytics (CTWF) for empyema in children. Our objective was to report outcomes from a centre that recently made the transition from VATS to CTWF as the primary treatment modality. Methods: We conducted a historical cohort study of children with empyema treated with either primary VATS (between 2005 and 2009) or CTWF (between 2009 and 2013). Results: Sixty-seven children underwent pleural drainage for empyema during the study period: 28 (42%) were treated with primary VATS, and 39 (58%) underwent CTWF. There were no significant differences between the VATS and CTWF groups for length of stay (8 v. 9 d, p = 0.61) or need for additional procedures (4% v. 13%, p = 0.19). Length of stay varied widely for both VATS (4-53 d) and CTWF (5-46 d). Primary VATS failed in 1 (4%) patient, who required an additional chest tube, and CTWF failed in 5 (13%) patients. Additional procedures included 3 rescue VATS, 2 additional chest tubes and 1 thoracotomy. All patients recovered and were discharged home. Conclusion: Primary VATS and CTWF were associated with similar outcomes in children with empyema. There appears to be a subset of children at risk for treatment failure with CTWF. Further research is needed to determine if these patients would benefit from primary VATS
