Background and aims: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused social and economic turmoil, which has led to enormous strain for many families. Past work with pandemic outbreaks suggests that media attention can increase anxiety and compensatory behaviors. Social isolation can lead to increase in online communication and parents who use social media may be affected by other people's emotions online through what is known as digital emotion contagion (DEC). The current study aimed to examine the role of DEC in the relationship between stress, concern about COVID-19, parental burnout and emotion regulation (ER). Methods: In April 2020, an online survey was advertised in Social Media Parenting Groups and published on FIU Psychology online research system SONA. Data were analyzed using correlational analysis, linear and multiple linear regression, and moderation analysis. Results: Concern about COVID-19 predicted stress, depression, and parental burnout. Susceptibility to DEC significantly increased the impact of stress on parental burnout. Having relatives infected with COVID-19 increased the effect of DEC on parental burnout. A higher level of ER buffered the relationship between emotion contagion and concern about COVID-19. Conclusion: These findings suggest that susceptibility to digital emotion contagion may have a negative effect on parents. Digital emotion contagion may increase parental burnout and is tied to stress

The sweating cognitions inventory: a measure of cognitions in hyperhidrosis

    Get PDF
Primary hyperhidrosis is a dermatological condition involving excessive sweating. Stress and emotional cues play a significant role in the onset of sweating, but little research has been conducted on this aspect of the condition. A cognitive-behavioral approach to hyperhidrosis would suggest that dysfunctional beliefs about the nature and consequences of sweating play a role in increased sweating. I investigated the psychometric properties and construct validity of a new measure of the cognitions hypothesized to be involved in hyperhidrosis: the Sweating Cognitions Inventory (SCI). The SCI demonstrated good internal consistency and a stable, unidimensional factor structure in both a clinical sample of individuals diagnosed with hyperhidrosis and a student comparison group. Sweating cognitions differentiated between the two groups, indicating discriminative validity. Correlations indicated that sweating cognitions were strongly related to sweating severity, and also social anxiety and anxiety sensitivity. Implications for the conceptualization and treatment of hyperhidrosis are discussed

Information Processing and Affective Responses in Hoarding Disorder

Hoarding, the accumulation of a large number of possessions and substantial clutter, is increasingly being recognized as an important public health concern. Emerging consensus suggests that hoarding is an independent phenomenon and it will likely be included as a new diagnosis (Hoarding Disorder) in the forthcoming revision to the DSM. An initial conceptual model of this condition has implicated information processing deficits and emotional distress as key components of hoarding disorder. Although it has shown promise, this model is in need of greater empirical support and verification. The present study reports on an investigation into information processing and affective responses in relation to hoarding. We compared adults meeting criteria for hoarding disorder (N=33) and community controls (N=30) using psychophysiological methodologies based on startle eyeblink responses. Prepulse inhibition of startle (PPI), a measure of sensorimotor gating used in previous studies of schizophrenia and OCD, was used to test for information processing deficits proposed to be involved in hoarding symptoms by the cognitive-behavioral model. Affective valence startle modulation (AVSM) was used to elucidate emotional processing in association with hoarding. We also compared hoarding and control group participants on startle reactivity at baseline and while undergoing a symptom-provocation stressor (discarding task). Contrary to our hypothesis, the hoarding and control group participants demonstrated comparable levels of PPI. There were also no group differences when considering comorbid diagnoses. PPI scores were not related to medication status. AVSM results revealed that both the hoarding and control groups demonstrated a linear pattern of startle modulation to pleasant, neutral and unpleasant stimuli respectively. The hoarding group demonstrated larger general startle reactivity compared to the control group, both at baseline and following the discarding task. We did not find group differences in PPI, indicating that hoarding disorder is not related to sensorimotor gating deficits. The hoarding and control groups had similar affective modulation of startle, but the hoarding group demonstrated higher general startle reactivity. Enhanced general startle suggests that hoarding disorder is characterized by enhanced defensive responding, as is noted in other anxiety disorders such as PTSD and GAD.Doctor of Philosoph

Obsessive-compulsive disorder and its related disorders: a reappraisal of obsessive-compulsive spectrum concepts

    Get PDF
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a clinical syndrome whose hallmarks are excessive, anxiety-evoking thoughts and compulsive behaviors that are generally recognized as unreasonable, but which cause significant distress and impairment. When these are the exclusive symptoms, they constitute uncomplicated OCD. OCD may also occur in the context of other neuropsychiatric disorders, most commonly other anxiety and mood disorders. The question remains as to whether these combinations of disorders should be regarded as independent, cooccurring disorders or as different manifestations of an incompletely understood constellation of OCD spectrum disorders with a common etiology. Additional considerations are given here to two potential etiology-based subgroups: (i) an environmentally based group in which OCD occurs following apparent causal events such as streptococcal infections, brain injury, or atypical neuroleptic treatment; and (ii) a genomically based group in which OCD is related to chromosomal anomalies or specific genes. Considering the status of current research, the concept of OCD and OCD-related spectrum conditions seems fluid in 2010, and in need of ongoing reappraisal

The Contribution of Experiential Avoidance and Social Cognitions in the Prediction of Social Anxiety

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models propose that social anxiety arises from specific dysfunctional cognitions about the likelihood and severity of embarrassment. Relational frame theory (RFT), on the other hand, posits that social anxiety arises from the unwillingness to endure unpleasant internal experiences (i.e. experiential avoidance [EA]). Although cognitive models have garnered empirical support, it may be that newer models such as RFT can improve our ability to predict and treat social anxiety. AIMS: We aimed to elucidate the relationship between dysfunctional cognitions and EA, as well as their independent and relative contributions to the prediction of social anxiety symptoms. We hypothesized that dysfunctional cognitions and EA would each be associated with social anxiety, as well as with each other. We also predicted that both EA and dysfunctional cognitions would remain independent predictors of social anxiety symptoms after controlling for each other and general distress. METHOD: Undergraduates high (n = 173) and low (n = 233) in social anxiety completed measures of social anxiety, dysfunctional cognitions, EA, and general distress. The overall sample was 66.3% female; mean age = 20.01 years (SD = 2.06). RESULTS: Correlational analyses revealed that EA, dysfunctional cognitions, and social anxiety symptoms were moderately correlated with one another. Additionally, hierarchical regression analyses revealed that dysfunctional cognitions predicted social anxiety symptoms even after controlling for EA; the reverse was not found. CONCLUSIONS: RESULTS suggest that EA and social anxiety specific cognitive distortions overlap to a moderate extent. EA does not add to the prediction of social anxiety symptoms above and beyond dysfunctional cognitions. Additional theoretical and treatment implications of the results are discussed

Assessment of obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions: development and evaluation

Although several measures of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms exist, most are limited in that they are not consistent with the most recent empirical findings on the nature and dimensional structure of obsessions and compulsions. In the present research, the authors developed and evaluated a measure called the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS) to address limitations of existing OC symptom measures. The DOCS is a 20-item measure that assesses the four dimensions of OC symptoms most reliably replicated in previous structural research. Factorial validity of the DOCS was supported by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of 3 samples, including individuals with OC disorder, those with other anxiety disorders, and nonclinical individuals. Scores on the DOCS displayed good performance on indices of reliability and validity, as well as sensitivity to treatment and diagnostic sensitivity, and hold promise as a measure of OC symptoms in clinical and research settings

Revisiting the five-facet structure of mindfulness

The current study aimed to replicate the development of the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) in a sample of 399 undergraduate students. We factor analyzed the Mindful Attention and Awareness Questionnaire (MAAS), the Freiburg Mindfulness Scale, the Southampton Mindfulness Questionnaire (SMQ), the Cognitive Affective Mindfulness Scale Revised (CAMS-R), and the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS), but also extended the analysis by including a conceptually related measure, the Philadelphia Mindfulness Scale (PHLMS), and a conceptually unrelated measure, the Langer Mindfulness Scale (LMS). Overall, we found a partial replication of the five-factor structure, with the exception of non-reacting and non-judging which formed a single factor. The PHLMS items loaded as expected with theoretically related factors, whereas the LMS items emerged as separate factor. Finally, we found a new factor that was mostly defined by negatively worded items indicating possible item wording artifacts within the FFMQ. Our conceptual validation study indicates that some facets of the FFMQ can be recovered, but item wording factors may threaten the stability of these facets. Additionally, measures such as the LMS appear to measure not only theoretically, but also empirically different constructs

Iconic dishes, culture and identity: the Christmas pudding and its hundred years’ journey in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and India

    Get PDF
Asserting that recipes are textual evidences reflecting the society that produced them, this article explores the evolution of the recipes of the iconic Christmas pudding in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and India between the mid-nineteenth and the mid-twentieth centuries. Combining a micro-analysis of the recipes and the cookbook that provided them with contemporary testimonies, the article observes the dynamics revealed by the preparation and consumption of the pudding in these different societies. The findings demonstrate the relevance of national iconic dishes to the study of notions of home, migration and colonization, as well as the development of a new society and identity. They reveal how the preservation, transformation and even rejection of a traditional dish can be representative of the complex and sometimes conflicting relationships between colonists, migrants or new citizens and the places they live in

Hepatic and renal end-organ damage in the Fontan circulation: a report from the Australian and New Zealand Fontan Registry

    Get PDF
Background: Hepatic and renal dysfunction have been observed in survivors of the Fontan procedure, however their incidence and associated factors remain poorly defined. Methods: A total of 152 participants from a Registry of 1528 patients underwent abdominal ultrasound, transient elastography (FibroScan), serum fibrosis score (FibroTest), in vivo Tc-99m DTPA measurement of glomerular filtration rate (mGFR), and urine albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR). Results: Mean age and time since Fontan were 19.8 ± 9.3 and 14.1 ± 7.6 years, respectively. Features suggestive of hepatic fibrosis were observed on ultrasound in 87/143 (61%) and no patient was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma. FibroScan median kPa was ≥10 in 117/133 (88%), ≥15 in 75/133 (56%), and ≥20 in 41/133 (31%). Fifty-four patients (54/118, 46%) had a FibroTest score ≥0.49 (equivalent to ≥F2 fibrosis). FibroTest score correlated with FibroScan value (r = 0.24, p = 0.015) and ACR (r = 0.29, p = 0.002), and patients with ultrasound features of hepatic fibrosis had a higher FibroScan median kPa (19.5 vs 15.4, p = 0.002). Renal impairment was mild (mGFR 60–89 ml/min/1.73 m) in 46/131 (35%) and moderate (mGFR 30–59 ml/min/1.73 m) in 3/131 (2%). Microalbuminuria was detected in 52/139 participants (37%). By multivariable analysis, time since Fontan was associated with increased FibroScan median kPa (β = 0.89, 95% CI 0.54–1.25, p = 0.002) and decreased mGFR (β = −0.77, 95% CI −1.29–0.24, p = 0.005). Conclusions: In the second decade after Fontan hepatic and renal structure and function are abnormal in a significant number of patients: close to 60% have ultrasonographic evidence of structural hepatic abnormalities, 46% have elevated serum hepatic fibrosis scores, and 57% have either reduced glomerular filtration rate or microalbuminuria. Hepatic and renal function should be monitored for potential impacts on outcomes after Fontan completion
