Using Ontological Ideas to Facilitate the Comparison of Requirements Elicitation Methods

    Get PDF
There are a plethora of system development methods available to practitioners, all purporting to be the best method. This variety brings with it an element of choice which can be perceived as a problem in itself, quite apart from the issue of developing a system. This paper uses elements of the ontological framework of Bunge, Wand and Weber to critically examine the constructs of several methods used to develop requirements specifications (and, in particular, business process models), notably the Business Rules Diagram (BRD) Method and the Unified Modelling Language (UML)

Technology and the management of change from the perspective of a culture context

The place of technology in the management of change is examined in the light of the cultural environment that mediates that relationship. The utility and limitations of such an examination are emphasized. Some factors that encouraged technological developments in the United States and some behaviors and institutional arrangements that reinforced these developments are specified. The favorable and unfavorable consequences for the management of change today are examined in the context of these persisting culture patterns. Because of the apparant inevitability of social turbulence in the next couple of decades, guiding social change to a different and appropriate valuing of technology, with corresponding changes in behavior and institutions, will require the development of social theory and technologies far beyond those presently available. The chances of succeeding seem slim.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/33974/1/0000246.pd

The Medical Malpractice Crisis: A Comparative Empirical Perspective

The results of a detailed empirical study of the Canadian medical malpractice experience are presented. Policy perspectives on the so-called medical malpractice crisis need to be much more broadly cast than the overwhelming preoccupation with tort reform issues that have dominated policy debates to this juncture

The Medical Malpractice Explosion: An Empirical Assessment of Trends, Determinants, and Impacts

    Get PDF
This article briefly describes trends in the frequency and severity of medical malpractice claims in Canada and the U.S., with some comparative references to trends in Britain and Australia. In all cases, frequency and severity rates appear to have risen quite dramatically over the past decade and a half. The article proceeds to explore various hypotheses that might explain these trends. While empirical analysis does not yield firm conclusions, the fact that so many jurisdictions have experienced a somewhat similar phenomenon makes it doubtful that the primary cause of the increase is likely to be idiosyncratic features of one particular country\u27s tort system. Instead, the authors conjecture that various changes in medical technology may well be a more important explanatory factor. The article goes on to examine the empirical evidence on the impact of expanding liability on physician behaviour and in turn whether observed changes in physician behaviour have caused reductions in the medical injury rate. While it seems clear from the evidence that the liability system has \u27induced various changes in physician behaviour, it is much less clear whether these changes have reduced the medical injury rate or are otherwise socially desirable

Feed Intake and Liveweight Gain of Goats Fed \u3ci\u3eUrochloa\u3c/i\u3e Grass

Crude protein and digestible dry matter are the most important components of a feed and determine animal performance. The natural pastures in Kenya are prone to great seasonal and spatial fluctuation in both quality and quantity. Consequently, there was need to explore other nutritious alternative feeds. Sixteen growing male Galla goats weighing 10 - 24 kg were used in a twelve weeks feeding trial in the coastal lowlands of Kenya. They were randomly allocated four grass diets consisting of Urochloa brizantha cvs. Piata and MG4, U. hybrid cv. Mulato II and Chloris gayana (Rhodes grass), which was used as the control. Regression analysis was conducted using daily weight gains as dependent variable against nutrient intake (dry matter, crude protein, acid detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin, neutral detergent fiber and ash). Crude protein intake gave a better prediction of daily gain (R2 = 0.89, P \u3c 0.001). Grass diet with high CP and digestibility values are most suitable for high ADG of Galla goats
