General interaction mode of CIDE:CIDE complex revealed by a mutation study of the Drep2 CIDE domain
AbstractThe CIDE domain is a well known protein–protein interaction module that is initially detected at the apoptotic DNA fragmentation factor (DFF40/45). The interaction mechanism via the CIDE domain is not well understood. To elucidate CIDE domain mediated interactions in the apoptotic DNA fragmentation system, we conducted biochemical and mutational studies and found that the surface of CIDE domains can be divided into an acidic side and a basic side. In addition, a mutagenesis study revealed that the basic surface side of Drep2 CIDE is involved in the interaction with the acidic surface side of Drep1 CIDE and Drep3 CIDE. Our research supports the idea that a charge–charge interaction might be the general interaction mode of the CIDE:CIDE interaction.Structured summary of protein interactionsDrep2andDrep2bindbymolecular sieving(View Interaction:1,2)Drep1andDrep2bindbymolecular sieving(View interaction)Drep3andDrep2bindbymolecular sieving(View interaction)Drep2andDrep3bindbyblue native page(View interaction)Drep2andDrep1bindbyblue native page(View interaction
Analysis of Urban Visitor's Walkability Based On Mobile Data: The Case of Daejeon, Korea
The walkability of destinations plays a decisive role in obtaining a sense of
place for urban visitors. For an improved walkability-based visit experience,
the city structure is analyzed by dividing it into small units, starting with
the destination. However, existing studies focus on the walkability of
residents by administrative district and use limited contextual information and
structural analysis tools. Therefore, this study aims to structurally
understand walkability through network analysis with mobile-based visitor data
collected from 822 point-of-interest (POI) in Daejeon. In this paper, the
actual walking distance between 95,817 cells with visitors and POI is measured
to calculate the edge weight and the influence of cells on POI. We analyze the
POI-cell network through edge weight, extract nine communities, understand the
city context through POI analysis and derive the following findings. Firstly,
it is possible to determine the potential demand by the visitor's
walkability-based division. Second, our walkability measurement method follows
a bottom-up approach, starting with a small unit cell, understanding the entire
city as a community extraction model, and possibly extending to other cities in
Korea. Third, POI-centered structural analysis is possible using the number of
visitors and distance in the proposed network analysis method
Growth of superconducting MgB2 thin films via postannealing techniques
We report the effect of annealing on the superconductivity of MgB2 thin films
as functions of the postannealing temperature in the range from 700 C to 950 C
and of the postannealing time in the range from 30 min to 120 min. On annealing
at 900 C for 30 min, we obtained the best-quality MgB2 films with a transition
temperature of 39 K and a critical current density of ~ 10^7 A/cm^2. Using the
scanning electron microscopy, we also investigated the film growth mechanism.
The samples annealed at higher temperatures showed the larger grain sizes,
well-aligned crystal structures with preferential orientations along the
c-axis, and smooth surface morphologies. However, a longer annealing time
prevented the alignment of grains and reduced the superconductivity, indicating
a strong interfacial reaction between the substrate and the MgB2 film.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures include
The Dendritic magnetic avalanches in carbon-free MgB thin films with and without a deposited Au layer
From the magneto optics images (MOI), the dendritic magnetic avalanche is
known to appear dominantly for thin films of the newly discovered MgB. To
clarify the origin of this phenomenon, we studied in detail the MOI of
carbon-free MgB thin films with and without a deposited gold layer. The MOI
indicated carbon contamination was not the main source of the avalanche. The
MOI clearly showed that the deposition of metallic gold deposition on top of a
MgB thin film improved its thermal stability and suppressed the sudden
appearance of the dendritic flux avalanche. This is consistent with the
previous observation of flux noise in the magnetization.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figeure
A Comparative Analysis of Three Major Transfer Airports in Northeast Asia Focusing on Incheon International Airport Using a Conjoint Analysis
Due mainly to the privatization and commercialization of airline companies and deregulation of the aviation rules, the demand for air transport has continuously been increasing. Airport authorities state that transfer passengers, who contribute to the large portion of the airports’ profits, are gaining much more importance, particularly in the Northeast Asia region where the air transport industry is very vital. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the competitiveness of IIA (Incheon International Airport) with other major airports located in Northeast Asia in passenger transfers made between Southeast Asia and China to North America using Conjoint Analysis. Results have indicated that airport brand is the most important attribute for the competitiveness of airport, followed by cost, connectivity and duty free shops. In further analysis focusing on brand value of the three airports measured by the use of transfer passengers, it was revealed that IIA needs more effort in developing their brand identity to become the leading transfer hub airport. Based on the results, recommendations for increasing the brand value have also been suggested
Is sleep apnea truly associated with hearing loss? A nationwide, population-based study with STOP-BANG questionnaire
ObjectivesWe aimed to investigate the effect of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on hearing ability.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the population-based survey data collected by the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020. The data included 3,575 participants who completed the STOP-BANG questionnaire (SBQ) and pure-tone audiometry. OSA risk was assessed using the SBQ, and the hearing level was compared between the risk groups.ResultsAmong the 3,575 participants, 2,152 (60.2%), 891 (24.9%), and 532 (14.9%) were classified as being low, intermediate, and high risk, respectively. The intermediate- and high-risk groups showed significantly worse hearing levels than the low-risk group. When age and sex were adjusted, the hearing level did not differ between the risk groups.ConclusionThe study found that the presence of OSA minimally affected hearing level. Because hearing loss due to hypoxic damage develops over a long period of time, further research on the association between the duration of OSA, rather than the presence or severity of OSA, and hearing loss is needed
Dispersion of Vascular Plant in Kumo-do, Korea
AbstractThe vascular plants observed in the area were composed of a total of 228 taxa; 72 families, 172 genus, 201 species, 25 varieties, 1 sub-species and 1 cross species. The only endangered plants found in the area were Milletia japonica (Siebold & Zucc.) A.Gray. The endemic plants growing in the Geumodo except transplanted plants were Lespedeza x maritima Nakai and Carpinus coreana Nakai. which accounted for 0.8% of the vascular plants in Geumodo, 228 taxa. Specialized plants of Geumodo were a total of 41 species; 30 taxa in Grade I, 1 taxon in Grade II, 9 taxa in Grade III and 1 taxon in Grade V. Milletia japonica (Siebold & Zucc.) A.Gray was the only species found in important Grade IV to V. Currently, ferries ply to the island, attracting many tourists. This poses a threat to the rare plants living in the island and presses down the island to develop. Therefore, in the long-term perspective, the conservation plan such as comprehensive research and monitoring on the ecosystem shall be established to protect evergreen broad-leaved forests
Flux Dendrites of Opposite Polarity in Superconducting MgB rings observed with magneto-optical imaging
Magneto-optical imaging was used to observe flux dendrites with opposite
polarities simultaneously penetrate superconducting, ring-shaped MgB films.
By applying a perpendicular magnetic field, branching dendritic structures
nucleate at the outer edge and abruptly propagate deep into the rings. When
these structures reach close to the inner edge, where flux with opposite
polarity has penetrated the superconductor, they occasionally trigger anti-flux
dendrites. These anti-dendrites do not branch, but instead trace the triggering
dendrite in the backward direction. Two trigger mechanisms, a non-local
magnetic and a local thermal, are considered as possible explanations for this
unexpected behaviour. Increasing the applied field further, the rings are
perforated by dendrites which carry flux to the center hole. Repeated
perforations lead to a reversed field profile and new features of dendrite
activity when the applied field is subsequently reduced.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted to Phys. Rev.
Improvement of the Usability of Online Mentoring Website
The purpose of this study is to improve the usability of the current online mentoring website by deriving what should be improved through assessment and reflecting it to system improvement. The related data such as search log and Think Aloud were collected from user groups (9 users in total), and usability was tested according to the predefined test procedures. The collected data were analyzed, using quantitative methods. In terms of search log, the related items including effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction and error were quantified according to usability testing standards. Then, descriptive statistics was performed. According to usability comparison before and after system improvement, it has mostly improved such as improved effectiveness (increase by 15 points), better efficiency (reduction by 41 seconds), increase in satisfaction (by 8 points) and decrease in error frequency (decrease by 1.2 times). Usability testing should be viewed as a process, not outcome itself. Therefore, it could be used during system prototype in addition to the current system and useful in system improvement
