For an icebreaker with two azimuth propulsors a hull shape has been developed with respect to maximum maneuverability in ice. An icebreaker design was extensively tested in the ice model basin. The aftbody design of an ice-going cargo vessel was modified for the application of one aximuth propulsor. Maneuverability and backing performance of the cargo vessel with azimuth propulsor was tested in comparison to a conventional propulsion system equipped with a high performance rotor-flap-rudder.
