Usage, attitudes and workload implications for a Web-based learning environment
At the University of Twente, a locally developed Web-based learning environment called the TeleTOP system is being implemented throughout the university after being first developed and used in the Faculty of Educational Science and Technology, followed by use in the Department of Telematics. Studying the usage choices of instructors with regard to tools offered by the system, as well as the instructors' workload implications and attitudes, is valuable not only for the implementation activities in the rest of the university, but more generally for those studying the impact on educational practice of Web-based learning environments containing course-management tools. This paper reports on a study of thirty-three TeleTOP using instructors from the two faculties at the end of the 1999–2000 academic year. The results show that instructors feel that a major benefit of using the system is that it is a catalyst for a re-evaluation of one's own teaching; many instructors do not make use of the tailoring options; decisions about use of the system and the provision of feedback are based on the current instructional practices of the instructor; and instructors perceive increases in their workload to be a problem (whenin fact the actual amounts of time spent vary considerably and include instructors with minimal investments)
Combinatorial Differential Forms
We extend to a scheme-theoretic context the notion of a combinatorial
differential form, due to A.Kock in the framework of synthetic differential
geometry. We show that group-valued combinatorial forms on a scheme may be
identified, under very general hypotheses, with traditional Lie algebra-valued
differential forms, and that their Lie algebra structure can be recovered from
first principles. Some basic results from differential geometry (Maurer-Cartan
equation, Bianchi identity), as well as a higher analogue, are obtained by
exploiting this identification.Comment: LaTeX, 49 pages, uses xy-Pi
Displayed equations for Galois representations
The Galois representation associated to a p-divisible group over a complete
noetherian normal local ring with perfect residue field is described in terms
of its Dieudonn\'e display. As a corollary we deduce in arbitrary
characteristic Kisin's description of the Galois representation associated to a
commutative finite flat p-group scheme over a p-adic discrete valuation ring in
terms of its Breuil-Kisin module. This was obtained earlier by W. Kim by a
different method.Comment: 15 page
RHyTHM: A Randomized Hybrid Scheme To Hide in the Mobile Crowd
Any on-demand pseudonym acquisition strategy is problematic should the
connectivity to the credential management infrastructure be intermittent. If a
vehicle runs out of pseudonyms with no connectivity to refill its pseudonym
pool, one solution is the on-the-fly generation of pseudonyms, e.g., leveraging
anonymous authentication. However, such a vehicle would stand out in the crowd:
one can simply distinguish pseudonyms, thus signed messages, based on the
pseudonym issuer signature, link them and track the vehicle. To address this
challenge, we propose a randomized hybrid scheme, RHyTHM, to enable vehicles to
remain operational when disconnected without compromising privacy: vehicles
with valid pseudonyms help others to enhance their privacy by randomly joining
them in using on-the-fly self-certified pseudonyms along with aligned
lifetimes. This way, the privacy of disconnected users is enhanced with a
reasonable computational overhead.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC),

Marine Flora and Fauna of the Northeastern United States Echinodermata: Crinoidea
The crinoid fauna of the continental margin (0-1500 m) of northeastern North America (Georgia to Canada) includes 14 species in 13 genera and 5 families. We introduce the external morphology and natural history of crinoids and include a glossary of terms, an illustrated key to local taxa, annotated systematic list, and an index. The fauna includes 2 species found no further south than New England and 8 that occur no further north than the Carolinas and Blake Plateau. Comactinia meridionalis (Agassiz) is the only species commonly found in shallow water «50 m). No
taxa are endemic to the area. (PDF file contains 34 pages.
The Impact of Pictorial Display on Operator Learning and Performance
The effects of pictorially displayed information on human learning and performance of a simple control task were investigated. The controlled system was a harmonic oscillator and the system response was displayed to subjects as either an animated pendulum or a horizontally moving dot. Results indicated that the pendulum display did not effect performance scores but did significantly effect the learning processes of individual operators. The subjects with the pendulum display demonstrated more vertical internal models early in the experiment and the manner in which their internal models were tuned with practice showed increased variability between subjects
