What do children want from the BBC?: Children’s content and participatory environments in an age of citizen media
This collaborative research project was funded through the
AHRC/BBC Knowledge Exchange Programme’s pilot funding
call. The aim of this initiative is to develop a long-term strategic partnership, bringing together the arts and humanities research community with BBC staff to enable co-funded knowledge exchange in the form of collaborative research and development. The benefits from the outcomes and outputs of these projects should be of equal significance to both partners

Members of the project team delved into the issue of news provision for teens, a notable gap in the BBC’s provision of news for citizens between Newsround and adult news, respectively. There already appears to be an acknowledgement within the BBC that this audience is under-served and that something must be done to address this gap
Young Citizens and the News
This chapter maps the relationship between young citizens, the news, and the public sphere, exploring what role news has in young people's lives. Using audience research in Cardiff, Glasgow, Coleraine and Bournemouth, the chapter discusses the importance of including children's voices, particularly if we want to create a strong democracy and public sphere in the future
