produtos do consumidor.
fertilização in vitro (IVF), malformações no período fetal e alterações da
Google e Google Scholar, Elseivier, Springer.
No
Introduction: According to the United Nations (UN), every year 400 million tons of
plastic are produced, and consequently, there has been an increasing concern about their
impact in human health.
Many types of substances are used as components of plastic. Phthalates are one of the
components used in order to make plastic more malleable, being present in many types
of consumption products. Phthalates work as an endocrine disruptor, therefore, they
have the capability of interfering in hormonal action, metabolism and biosynthesis,
resulting in a deviation from normal hormonal homeostasis. Some phthalates have been
considered category IB as toxic substances for reproduction and consequently have
suffered some restrictions on the industrial level. However, their exposure remains
ubiquitous in the population.
Phthalates can interfere in the androgens and estrogens normal homeostasis, as in the
gonadal-pituitary-hypothalamus axis, causing adverse effects in the development and
reproduction of men and women. Some of these effects have already been characterized
in epidemiologic and experimental studies in humans and animals. Although not being
consistent, some authors relate exposure to phthalates with early puberty, primary
ovarian insufficiency, endometriosis, pregnancy related and in vitro fertilization
problems, malformations in the fetal period and spermatogenesis alterations.
Parallel to the increasing production of synthetic chemicals with endocrine disruptor
properties, human fertility has suffered a decline in the past decades. In this way, having
into account the effects of phthalates in the human reproductive system it is important
to clarify their part in infertility.
Methodology: In order to carry out this work, a search was made on the Internet for
scientific articles related to the theme using PubMed, Google, Google Scholar, Elsievir
and Springer as search engines and scientific databases.
Objective: To verify the effects of phthalates in reproductive health; to ascertain the
possible relation between the increasing production of phthalates and the increase in
infertility registered in the past decades.
Conclusion: Human exposure to phthalates might have reproductive health implications
in men as in women, with potential consequences on fertility. However, further studies
in humans are needed to clarify this association, as well as the quantification of the
exposure risk
