    Code of conduct proposal for the Quality management subject: interuniversity comparison

    El marco europeo de educación superior ha supuesto un reciclaje en la metodología de enseñanza. Una de las características del tratado de Bolonia es la evaluación continua del alumnado, el cual es evaluado periódicamente para analizar el alcance de sus conocimientos y el desarrollo de sus competencias. Del éxito de esta metodología depende la motivación y la satisfacción de los estudiantes, por ello, el primer objetivo de este artículo es analizar la satisfacción de los alumnos con la metodología de evaluación continua. El nuevo sistema de enseñanza-aprendizaje requiere más interacción entre profesores-alumnos y alumnos-alumnos. Esto aumenta la necesidad de unas normas de comportamiento en las clases. Por ello, nos planteamos como segundo objetivo elaborar un código de conducta para la asignatura de Gestión de la Calidad. La metodología aplicada para conocer la satisfacción del alumnado ha sido un cuestionario sobre aspectos diversos de la asignatura, entre ellos la metodología de evaluación. El código ético es propuesto por los estudiantes como un ejercicio de la evaluación continua. El análisis se ha llevado a cabo en la Universidad de Alicante y la Universitat de Barcelona. Los resultados muestran opiniones similares con relación a la metodología docente. Por ejemplo, el alumno muestra sus preferencias por la evaluación continua frente a la tradicional. De igual forma, los aspectos más destacables de los códigos éticos son: cumplir con la legislación vigente, respetar a las personas, sancionar los comportamientos inadecuados como copiar en los exámenes, la corrupción, el soborno, etc. La propuesta de código ético que se presenta es para ambas universidades y para esta asignatura, pero tiene la voluntad de poderse implantar en otras asignaturas que deseen seguir esta práctica.The European framework for higher education meant recycling the teaching methodology. One characteristic of the Bologna Agreement is the students’ continuous assessments, which are periodically evaluated to analyse the scope of their knowledge and competence development. The success of this approach depends on the motivation and satisfaction of students; therefore, the first aim of this paper is to analyse the students’ satisfaction with the continuous assessment methodology. New teaching-learning system requires more interaction between lecturers-students and students-students. This increases the need for standards of behavior in classes. Therefore, the second aim is to propose a code of conduct for the Quality Management subject. The methodology applied to know the students’ satisfaction is a questionnaire about different aspects of the subject, among them the evaluation methodology. The code of conduct is proposed by the student’s as an exercise of the continuous assessment. The analysis has been done at the Universidad de Alicante and Universitat de Barcelona. The results show similar opinions regarding the teaching methodology. For example, the students prefer the continuous assessment rather the traditional evaluation. Similarly, the most highlighted aspects of the codes of conduct are: legal compliance, respect people, punishing inadequate behaviours such as cheating, corruption, bribery, etc. The code of conduct proposal presented is for both universities and for the specific subject, but it has the will to be implemented in other subjects wishing to follow this practic

    The creation of learning networks in two Spanish public high schools

    This paper tries to analyse learning networks in the context of non-compulsory secondary education in the Spanish public schools, within their process of moving towards more innovative models based on progressively greater use of active learning methodologies as well as on greater and better use of ICTs. Our goal was to determine, using the SCCI (Rovai 2002), the degree of consolidation of the learning networks formed by students in the first year of non-compulsory secondary education at two quite different public high schools: one large school in an urban area (Institut Joaquín Bau in Tortosa, Tarragona, Spain) and one small school in a rural setting (Institut Els Ports in Morella, Castellón, Spain), and all for determining how important the kind of school and school environment can be when creating learning networks.peer-reviewe

    The magnetic fingerprint of dithiazolyl-based molecule magnets

    Magnetic bistability in organic-radical based materials has attracted significant interest due to its potential application in electronic devices. The first-principles bottom-up study herein presented aims at elucidating the key factors behind the different magnetic response of the low and high temperature phases of four different switchable dithiazolyl (DTA)-based compounds. The drastic change in the magnetic response upon spin transition is always due to the changes in the J(AB) magnetic interactions between adjacent radicals along the -stacks of the crystal, which in turn are driven mostly by the changes in the interplanar distance and degree of lateral slippage, according to the interpretation of a series of magneto-structural correlation maps. Furthermore, specific geometrical dispositions have been recognized as a ferromagnetic fingerprint in such correlations. Our results thus show that an appropriate substitution of the chemical skeleton attached to the DTA ring could give rise to new organic materials with dominant ferromagnetic interactions

    Three-dimensional power Doppler angiography in endometrial cancer: correlation with tumor characteristics

    To assess the correlation between intratumoral vascularization using three-dimensional power Doppler angiography (3D-PDA) and several histological tumor characteristics in a series of patients with endometrial carcinoma. METHODS: Ninety-nine women (mean age, 61.7 (range, 31-84) years) diagnosed as having endometrial cancer were assessed by transvaginal 3D-PDA before surgical staging. Endometrial volume (EV) and 3D-PDA vascular indices (vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI) and vascularization flow index (VFI)) were calculated using the Virtual Organ Computer-aided AnaLysis (VOCAL) method. All patients were surgically staged. Individual tumor features such as histological type, tumor grade, myometrial infiltration depth, lymph-vascular space involvement, cervical involvement, lymph node metastases and tumor stage were considered for analysis. Multivariate logistic regression (MLR) analysis was used to determine which 3D-PDA parameters were independently associated with each histological characteristic. RESULTS: MLR analysis showed that only EV and VI were independently associated with myometrial infiltration (EV: odds ratio (OR), 1.119 (95% CI, 1.025-1.221), P = 0.012; VI: OR, 1.127 (95% CI, 1.063-1.195), P = 0.001) and tumor stage (EV: OR, 1.103 (95% CI, 1.012-1.202), P = 0.025; VI: OR, 1.120 (95% CI, 1.057-1.187), P = 0.001), only VI was independently associated with tumor grade (OR, 1.056 (95% CI, 1.023-1.091), P = 0.001) and only EV was independently associated with lymph node metastases (OR, 1.086 (95% CI, 1.017-1.161), P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: 3D-PDA analysis of tumor vascularization in endometrial cancer correlates with some prognostic histological characteristics

    Redundant roles of the phosphatidate phosphatase family in triacylglycerol synthesis in human adipocytes.

    AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: In mammals, the evolutionary conserved family of Mg(2+)-dependent phosphatidate phosphatases (PAP1), involved in phospholipid and triacylglycerol synthesis, consists of lipin-1, lipin-2 and lipin-3. While mutations in the murine Lpin1 gene cause lipodystrophy and its knockdown in mouse 3T3-L1 cells impairs adipogenesis, deleterious mutations of human LPIN1 do not affect adipose tissue distribution. However, reduced LPIN1 and PAP1 activity has been described in participants with type 2 diabetes. We aimed to characterise the roles of all lipin family members in human adipose tissue and adipogenesis. METHODS: The expression of the lipin family was analysed in adipose tissue in a cross-sectional study. Moreover, the effects of lipin small interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated depletion on in vitro human adipogenesis were assessed. RESULTS: Adipose tissue gene expression of the lipin family is altered in type 2 diabetes. Depletion of every lipin family member in a human Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome (SGBS) pre-adipocyte cell line, alters expression levels of adipogenic transcription factors and lipid biosynthesis genes in early stages of differentiation. Lipin-1 knockdown alone causes a 95% depletion of PAP1 activity. Despite the reduced PAP1 activity and alterations in early adipogenesis, lipin-silenced cells differentiate and accumulate neutral lipids. Even combinatorial knockdown of lipins shows mild effects on triacylglycerol accumulation in mature adipocytes. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Overall, our data support the hypothesis of alternative pathways for triacylglycerol synthesis in human adipocytes under conditions of repressed lipin expression. We propose that induction of alternative lipid phosphate phosphatases, along with the inhibition of lipid hydrolysis, contributes to the maintenance of triacylglycerol content to near normal levels.This study was supported by research grants from the ‘Instituto de Salud Carlos III’ (ISCIII, Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness) (PI10/00967 and CP11/0 0021 to MM); the R.     Evolution of Antimicrobial Consumption During the First Wave of COVID-19 Pandemic

    Background: The first wave of COVID-19 pandemic may have significantly impacted antimicrobial consumption in hospitals. The objective of this study was to assess the evolution of antimicrobial consumption during this period. Methods : A retrospective quasi-experimental before-after study was conducted in a Spanish tertiary care hospital. The study compared two periods: pre-pandemic, from January 2018 to February 2020, and during the COVID-19 pandemic from March to June 2020. Antimicrobial consumption was analyzed monthly as defined daily doses (DDD)/100 bed-days and overall hospital and ICU consumption were evaluated. Results: An increase in the hospital consumption was noticed. Although only ceftaroline achieved statistical significance (p = 0.014), a rise was observed in most of the studied antimicrobials. A clear temporal pattern was detected. While an increase in ceftriaxone and azithromycin was observed during March, an increment in the consumption of daptomycin, carbapenems, linezolid, ceftaroline, novel cephalosporin/β-lactamase inhibitors or triazoles during April-May was noticed. In the ICU, these findings were more evident, namely ceftriaxone (p = 0.029), carbapenems (p = 0.002), daptomycin (p = 0.002), azithromycin (p = 0.030), and linezolid (p = 0.011) but followed a similar temporal pattern. Conclusion : An increase in the antimicrobial consumption during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic was noticed, especially in the ICU. Availability of updated protocols and antimicrobial stewardship programs are essential to optimize these outcomes

    Satellite ligand effects on magnetic exchange in dimers. A structural, magnetic and theoretical investigation of Cu2L2X4 (L = methylisothiazolinone and X = Cl-, Br-)

    Halide-bridged polymers have gained significant interest due to their diverse properties and potential applications. Stacked Cu2L2X4 dimers, where L is an organic ligand and X can be Cl or Br , are of interest because a chloride analogue where L = 2-pyridone, had previously been reported to exhibit bulk ferromagnetism, which augured great potentiality for this class of compounds. The synthesis, structural characterization, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and computational studies of two isostructural CuClMI (MI = methylisothiazolinone) and CuBrMI polymers of Cu(II), along with a related CuClPYR (PYR = 2-pyridone) is reported. CuClMI and CuBrMI were found to exhibit AFM bulk properties, due to FM/AFM alternating chains along the halide-bridged polymer axis, while FM bulk properties were confirmed for CuClPYR exhibiting a FM spin ladder. In combination with a benzamide analogue, CuClBA, three O-donor amides, CuClMI, CuClBA and CuClPYR were analyzed and revealed that the kinetic exchange is affected by the identity, but more importantly, the orientation of the satellite ligands. The torsional angle of the ligand with the dimer plane is shown to significantly affect the magnetic exchange in the dimer, and between dimers, explaining the reported FM bulk properties of CuClPYR.     CA125-Guided Diuretic Treatment Versus Usual Care in Patients With Acute Heart Failure and Renal Dysfunction

    Background: The optimal diuretic treatment strategy for patients with acute heart failure and renal dysfunction remains unclear. Plasma carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) is a surrogate of fluid overload and a potentially valuable tool for guiding decongestion therapy. The aim of this study was to determine if a CA125-guided diuretic strategy is superior to usual care in terms of short-term renal function in patients with acute heart failure and renal dysfunction at presentation. Methods: This multicenter, open-label study randomized 160 patients with acute heart failure and renal dysfunction into 2 groups (1:1). Loop diuretics doses were established according to CA125 levels in the CA125-guided group (n = 79) and in clinical evaluation in the usual-care group (n = 81). Changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at 72 and 24 hours were the co-primary endpoints, respectively. Results: The mean age was 78 ± 8 years, the median amino-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide was 7765 pg/mL, and the mean eGFR was 33.7 ± 11.3 mL/min/1.73m2. Over 72 hours, the CA125-guided group received higher furosemide equivalent dose compared to usual care (P = 0.011), which translated into higher urine volume (P = 0.042). Moreover, patients in the active arm with CA125 >35 U/mL received the highest furosemide equivalent dose (P <0.001) and had higher diuresis (P = 0.013). At 72 hours, eGFR (mL/min/1.73m2) significantly improved in the CA125-guided group (37.5 vs 34.8, P = 0.036), with no significant changes at 24 hours (35.8 vs 39.5, P = 0.391). Conclusion: A CA125-guided diuretic strategy significantly improved eGFR and other renal function parameters at 72 hours in patients with acute heart failure and renal dysfunction

    Amyloid-PET imaging predicts functional decline in clinically normal individuals

    Background: There is good evidence that elevated amyloid-β (Aβ) positron emission tomography (PET) signal is associated with cognitive decline in clinically normal (CN) individuals. However, it is less well established whether there is an association between the Aβ burden and decline in daily living activities in this population. Moreover, Aβ-PET Centiloids (CL) thresholds that can optimally predict functional decline have not yet been established. // Methods: Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses over a mean three-year timeframe were performed on the European amyloid-PET imaging AMYPAD-PNHS dataset that phenotypes 1260 individuals, including 1032 CN individuals and 228 participants with questionable functional impairment. Amyloid-PET was assessed continuously on the Centiloid (CL) scale and using Aβ groups (CL  50 = Aβ+). Functional abilities were longitudinally assessed using the Clinical Dementia Rating (Global-CDR, CDR-SOB) and the Amsterdam Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Questionnaire (A-IADL-Q). The Global-CDR was available for the 1260 participants at baseline, while baseline CDR-SOB and A-IADL-Q scores and longitudinal functional data were available for different subsamples that had similar characteristics to those of the entire sample. // Results: Participants included 765 Aβ- (61%, Mdnage = 66.0, IQRage = 61.0–71.0; 59% women), 301 Aβ± (24%; Mdnage = 69.0, IQRage = 64.0–75.0; 53% women) and 194 Aβ+ individuals (15%, Mdnage = 73.0, IQRage = 68.0–78.0; 53% women). Cross-sectionally, CL values were associated with CDR outcomes. Longitudinally, baseline CL values predicted prospective changes in the CDR-SOB (bCL*Time = 0.001/CL/year, 95% CI [0.0005,0.0024], p = .003) and A-IADL-Q (bCL*Time = -0.010/CL/year, 95% CI [-0.016,-0.004], p = .002) scores in initially CN participants. Increased clinical progression (Global-CDR > 0) was mainly observed in Aβ+ CN individuals (HRAβ+ vs Aβ- = 2.55, 95% CI [1.16,5.60], p = .020). Optimal thresholds for predicting decline were found at 41 CL using the CDR-SOB (bAβ+ vs Aβ- = 0.137/year, 95% CI [0.069,0.206], p < .001) and 28 CL using the A-IADL-Q (bAβ+ vs Aβ- = -0.693/year, 95% CI [-1.179,-0.208], p = .005). // Conclusions: Amyloid-PET quantification supports the identification of CN individuals at risk of functional decline. // Trial registration: The AMYPAD PNHS is registered at www.clinicaltrialsregister.eu with the EudraCT Number: 2018-002277-22
