Bio-inspired hydrophobicity promotes CO2 reduction on a Cu surface
International audienceThe aqueous electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 into alcohol and hydrocarbon fuels presents a sustainable route towards energy-rich chemical feedstocks. Cu is the only material able to catalyse the substantial formation of multicarbon products (C2/C3), but competing proton reduction to hydrogen is an ever-present drain on selectivity. Here, a superhydrophobic surface was generated by 1-octadecanethiol treatment of hierarchically structured Cu dendrites, inspired by the structure of gas-trapping cuticles on subaquatic spiders. The hydrophobic electrode attained a 56% Faradaic efficiency for ethylene and 17% for ethanol production at neutral pH, compared to 9% and 4% on a hydrophilic, wettable equivalent. These observations are assigned to trapped gases at the hydrophobic Cu surface, which increase the concentration of CO2 at the electrodeâsolution interface and consequently increase CO2 reduction selectivity. Hydrophobicity is thus proposed as a governing factor in CO2 reduction selectivity and can help explain trends seen on previously reported electrocatalysts

Integrative diagnosis of primary cutaneous large B-cell lymphomas supports the relevance of cell of origin profiling.
Primary cutaneous large B-cell lymphomas (PCLBCL) represent a diagnostic challenge because they are classified as PCLBCL, leg type (PCLBCL, LT) or primary cutaneous follicle centre lymphoma, large cell (PCFCL, LC), which differ by prognosis and therapeutic requirement. Unclassified cases with discordant clinical presentations, morphologies, and immunophenotypes may be classified into the not otherwise specified (PCLBCL, NOS) category based on ancillary molecular analyses. Cell-of-origin profiling as germinal centre (GC) type or non-GC type by immunohistochemistry is not considered reproducible because of variable CD10 expression. In a series of 55 PCLBCL cases with > 80% large cells, we reported 21 PCFCL, LC cases as GC-type and 27 PCLBCL, LT as non-GC-type; 7 cases were considered PCLBCL, NOS. Here, we demonstrate the accuracy of molecular profiling of PCLBCL as GC or non-GC type using a reverse transcriptase multiplex ligation assay (RT-MLPA). RT-MLPA classified the seven PCLBCL, NOS cases in accordance with their mutational profile. An integrative principal component analysis confirmed the main criteria and the relevance of genomic profiling of PCFCL, LC as GC-derived, and PCLBCL, LT as non-GC-derived. Both the cell-of-origin classification of PCLBCL and the integrative analysis identified two clinically relevant subgroups according to overall survival, which may help to standardize PCLBCL diagnosis and patient management
Selenium Nanowire Formation by Reacting Selenate with Magnetite
International audienceThe mobility of 79Se, a fission product of 235U and long-lived radioisotope, is an important parameter in the safety assessment of radioactive nuclear waste disposal systems. Nonradioactive selenium is also an important contaminant of drainage waters from black shale mountains and coal mines. Highly mobile and soluble in its high oxidation states, selenate (Se(VI)O42â) and selenite (Se(IV)O32â) oxyanions can interact with magnetite, a mineral present in anoxic natural environments and in steel corrosion products, thereby being reduced and consequently immobilized by forming low-solubility solids. Here, we investigated the sorption and reduction capacity of synthetic nanomagnetite toward Se(VI) at neutral and acidic pH, under reducing, oxygen-free conditions. The additional presence of Fe(II)aq, released during magnetite dissolution at pH 5, has an effect on the reduction kinetics. X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses revealed that, at pH 5, trigonal gray Se(0) formed and that sorbed Se(IV) complexes remained on the nanoparticle surface during longer reaction times. The Se(0) nanowires grew during the reaction, which points to a complex transport mechanism of reduced species or to active reduction sites at the tip of the Se(0) nanowires. The concomitant uptake of aqueous Fe(II) and Se(VI) ions is interpreted as a consequence of small pH oscillations that result from the Se(VI) reduction, leading to a re-adsorption of aqueous Fe(II) onto the magnetite, renewing its reducing capacity. This effect is not observed at pH 7, where we observed only the formation of Se(0) with slow kinetics due to the formation of an oxidized maghemite layer. This indicates that the presence of aqueous Fe(II) may be an important factor to be considered when examining the environmental reactivity of magnetite
Low-cost high-efficiency system for solar-driven conversion of CO2 to hydrocarbons
Conversion of carbon dioxide into hydrocarbons using solar energy is an attractive strategy for storing such a renewable source of energy into the form of chemical energy (a fuel). This can be achieved in a system coupling a photovoltaic (PV) cell to an electrochemical cell (EC) for CO2 reduction. To be beneficial and applicable, such a system should use low-cost and easily processable photovoltaic cells and display minimal energy losses associated with the catalysts at the anode and cathode and with the electrolyzer device. In this work, we have considered all of these parameters altogether to set up a reference PVâEC system for CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons. By using the same original and efficient Cu-based catalysts at both electrodes of the electrolyzer, and by minimizing all possible energy losses associated with the electrolyzer device, we have achieved CO2 reduction to ethylene and ethane with a 21% energy efficiency. Coupled with a state-of-the-art, low-cost perovskite photovoltaic minimodule, this system reaches a 2.3% solar-to-hydrocarbon efficiency, setting a benchmark for an inexpensive allâearth-abundant PVâEC system.ISSN:0027-8424ISSN:1091-649
Impact des algorithmes du groupe français dâĂ©tude des lymphomes cutanĂ©s (GFELC) sur le diagnostic anatomopathologique des lymphoprolifĂ©rations cutanĂ©es
International audienceAfter a first diagnosis proposition, management of cutaneous lymphomas requires a systematic review by an expert pathologist and each case is presented to a multidisciplinary meeting in the setting of the French Study Group of Cutaneous Lymphomas to propose an adequate treatment. A retrospective study of the 2760 cutaneous lymphoproliferations retrieved between 2010 and 2011 were analyzed and demonstrated the interest of diagnostic algorithms we built with the group. The objective of our study was to compare two cohorts from 2010-2011 and 2015-2017 regarding the proportion of cases sent for validation or expertise, the concordance and mismatch rates and potential diagnostic issues using our diagnostic algorithms. Between 2015-2017, 5640 skin lymphoproliferation cases were examined. It appeared that Pathologists were more confident and effective in finding the right diagnosis. Indeed, the rate of concordant diagnosis increased from 57% to 67%. Moreover, in comparison with the 2010-2011 concordant cases sent for expertise, 73.5% of concordant cases were sent for validation in 2015-2017. 14% of cases remained discordant, mainly sent for expertise. Furthermore, half of questionable cases (26.3%) were resolved after expertise, and 12.1% cases remained unsolved. These priority cases are important to be presented at multidisciplinary meeting. The analysis of discordant and doubtful cases unveiled recurrent diagnostic problems for which we proposed appropriate diagnostic algorithms including large B cell lymphomas, CD4+ T cell lymphoproliferations, epidermotropic CD8+ T-cell lymphoproliferations and the differential diagnosis of mycosis fongoĂŻdes/Sezary syndrome versus inflammatory dermatitis

Primary cutaneous large Bâcell lymphomas: relevance of the 2017 World Health Organization classification: clinicopathological and molecular analyses of 64 cases
International audienceWe applied the 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) classification criteria to categorise a series of 64 primary cutaneous large B-cell lymphomas (PCLBCLs), containing a majority (â„80%) of large cells and a proliferative rate of â„40%, raising the problem of the differential diagnosis between PCLBCL, leg type (PCLBCL-LT) and primary cutaneous follicle centre lymphoma, large cell (PCFCL-LC). The aims were to determine the reproducibility and prognostic relevance of the 2017 WHO criteria. Methods and results: Morphology and phenotype identified 32 PCLBCLs-LT and 25 PCFCLs-LC; seven cases (11%) remained unclassified. Morphology was less reproducible than immunophenotype. Pertinent markers for the differential diagnosis were MUM1, FOXP1, CD10, and IgM. bcl-2 and bcl-6 were expressed by both PCFCLs-LC and PCLBCLs-LT at substantial levels. Neither Ki67 expression nor p63 expression was of diagnostic value. MYD88 was found to be mutated only in PCLBCLs-LT (n = 22, 69%). According to Hans/Hans modified algorithms, 23 of 25 PCFCLs-LC had germinal centre (GC) status, and the 32 PCLBCLs-LT had non-GC status. Overall survival was poorer for PCLBCLs-LT than PCFCLs-LC (P = 0.0002). Non-GC cases had poorer overall survival than GC cases (P = 0.0007). In PCLBCLs-LT, MYC expression was associated with cutaneous relapses (P = 0.014). When GC/non-GC status was applied to unclassified cases, only a single case remained discordant. Conclusions: Our results support the 2017 WHO classification criteria for PCLBCL diagnosis. The Hans modified algorithm using CD10 and MUM1 distinguished PCFCLs-LC from PCLBCLs-LT with optimal diagnostic value without requiring bcl-6 immunolabelling (poorly reproducible). Rare unclassified cases may constitute a provisionally heterogeneous subgroup for which GC/non-GC status (relevant for prognosis) may guide therapeutic decisions
