    Nonlinear electrodynamics and the Pioneer 10/11 spacecraft anomaly

    The occurrence of the phenomenon known as photon acceleration is a natural prediction of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED). This would appear as an anomalous frequency shift in any modeling of the electromagnetic field that only takes into account the classical Maxwell theory. Thus, it is tempting to address the unresolved anomalous, steady; but time-dependent, blueshift of the Pioneer 10/11 spacecrafts within the framework of NLED. Here we show that astrophysical data on the strength of the magnetic field in both the Galaxy and the local (super)cluster of galaxies support the view on the major Pioneer anomaly as a consequence of the phenomenon of photon acceleration. If confirmed, through further observations or lab experiments, the reality of this phenomenon should prompt to take it into account in any forthcoming research on both cosmological evolution and origin and dynamical effects of primordial magnetic fields, whose seeds are estimated to be very weak.Comment: Final version accepted for publication in Europhysics Letters, uses EPL style, 7 page

    Prediction of resting energy expenditure in Italian older adults with severe obesity

    Background: In the last decade a large number of studies proposed and/or validated equations to estimate the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) in adults and/or older adults, however, no equation currently available showed good accuracy for older adults with severe obesity. Thus, this study aimed to develop and validate new predictive equations for REE, based on data from the indirect calorimetry, in Italian older adults with severe obesity. Methods: A retrospective study was as conducted with 764 Caucasian older adults with severe obesity (age range: 60-74 years and BMI ≥ 35 kg/m/2). Four models were used to test the accuracy of anthropometry and body composition variables in multivariable prediction of REE. All models were derived by stepwise multiple regression analysis using a calibration group of 382 subjects [295 females and 87 males] and the equations were cross-validated in the remaining 382 subjects [295 females and 87 males] as validation group. The new prediction equations and the other published equations were tested using the Bland-Altman method. Prediction accuracy was defined as the percentage of subjects whose REE was predicted within ± 10% of measured REE. Results: All the equations analyzed predicted higher energy requirements for males than females, and most of them underestimated the energy requirement values of our sample. The highest accuracy values were observed in the new equations, with 62% in the anthropometric model and 63% in the body composition model. Conclusion: Although the accuracy of our equations was slightly higher in comparison with the other taken into consideration, they cannot be considered completely satisfactory for predicting REE in Italians older adults with severe obesity. When predicting equations cannot guarantee precise or acceptable values of REE, the use of indirect calorimetry (if available) should be always recommended, especially in clinical practice

    Photon frequency conversion induced by gravitational radiation

    We consider propagation of gravitational radiation in a magnetized multicomponent plasma. It is shown that large density perturbations can be generated, even for small deviations from flat space, provided the cyclotron frequency is much larger than the plasma frequency. Furthermore, the induced density gradients can generate frequency conversion of electromagnetic radiation, which may give rise to indirect observational effect of the gravitational waves.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, uses revtex, Accepted for publication in Phys.     Technical Note: Latitude-time variations of atmospheric column-average dry air mole fractions of CO_2, CH_4 and N_2O

    We present a comparison of an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM)-based chemistry-transport model (ACTM) simulation with total column measurements of CO_2, CH_4 and N_2O from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON). The model is able to capture observed trends, seasonal cycles and inter hemispheric gradients at most sampled locations for all three species. The model-observation agreements are best for CO_2, because the simulation uses fossil fuel inventories and an inverse model estimate of non-fossil fuel fluxes. The ACTM captures much of the observed seasonal variability in CO_2 and N_2O total columns (~81 % variance, R>0.9 between ACTM and TCCON for 19 out of 22 cases). These results suggest that the transport processes in troposphere and stratosphere are well represented in ACTM. Thus the poor correlation between simulated and observed CH4 total columns, particularly at tropical and extra-tropical sites, have been attributed to the uncertainties in surface emissions and loss by hydroxyl radicals. While the upward-looking total column measurements of CO_2 contains surface flux signals at various spatial and temporal scales, the N_2O measurements are strongly affected by the concentration variations in the upper troposphere and stratosphere

    The challenge of early diagnosis of autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome in children with suspected autoinflammatory/autoimmune disorders

    OBJECTIVES: To test the usefulness of an extended panel of lymphocyte subsets in combination with Oliveira's diagnostic criteria for the identification of autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) in children referred to a paediatric rheumatology centre. METHODS: Patients referred from 2015 to 2018 to our rheumatology unit for an autoimmune or autoinflammatory condition were retrospectively analysed. Oliveira's required criteria [chronic lymphoproliferation and elevated double-negative T (DNT)] were applied as first screening. Flow cytometry study included double-negative CD4-CD8-TCR\u3b1\u3b2+ T lymphocytes (DNT), CD25+CD3+, HLA-DR+CD3+ T cells, B220+ T cells and CD27+ B cells. Data were analysed with a univariate logistic regression analysis, followed by a multivariate analysis. Sensitivity and specificity of the Oliveira's required criteria were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 264 patients were included in the study and classified as: (i) autoimmune diseases (n\u2009=\u200926); (ii) juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) (35); (iii) monogenic systemic autoinflammatory disease (27); (iv) periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and adenitis syndrome (100); (v) systemic undefined recurrent fever (45); (vi) undetermined-systemic autoinflammatory disease (14); or (vii) ALPS (17). Oliveira's required criteria displayed a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 79%. When compared with other diseases the TCR\u3b1\u3b2+B220+ lymphocytes were significantly increased in ALPS patients. The multivariate analysis revealed five clinical/laboratory parameters positively associated to ALPS: splenomegaly, female gender, arthralgia, elevated DNT and TCR\u3b1\u3b2+B220+ lymphocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Oliveira's required criteria are useful for the early suspicion of ALPS. TCR\u3b1\u3b2+B220+ lymphocytes should be added in the diagnostic work-up of patients referred to the paediatric rheumatology unit for a suspected autoimmune or autoinflammatory condition, providing a relevant support in the early diagnosis of ALPS

    Chemical characterization of the american oil palm from the Brazilian Amazon Forest.

    Abstract: American oil palm [Elaeis oleifera (Kunth) Cortes] is known to present a much slower palm oil deterioration rate than African oil palm (E. guineensis Jacq.). In the present study, fatty acid composition, total carotenoids, oil content, and free fatty acid content were characterized for five accessions (Careiro, Anori, Manicoré, Coari, and Autazes) belonging to an American oil palm collection maintained as field gene bank by Embrapa. This germplasm collection was originally collected in different areas in the Brazilian Amazon forest. These accessions were subjected to different storage times (1, 7, and 14 d) before processing to evaluate the quality of the oil produced. Oil content of the dried pulp was found to range between 31.36 and 50.34%. Gas chromatographic analysis revealed that oleic acid is the predominant monounsaturated fatty acid in all five accessions. After 14 d of fruit storage, these accessions were found to maintain low acidity (free fatty acid content), between 1.33 and 2.66%. Total carotenoid content was presented in high concentrations in all five accessions (>1500 mg kg−1). The estimation of genetic parameters showed, in general, high heritability values (>80%), and the estimated genetic gains were generally very high. Coari and Careiro presented the highest oil yields, whereas Manicoré and Coari presented the lowest acidity. These two characteristics are the most important ones when selecting the best parental donor to develop superior interspecific hybrids
