A comparative study of the nonuniqueness problem of the potential equation

    Get PDF
The nonuniqueness problem occurring at transonic speeds with the conservative potential equation is investigated numerically. The study indicates that the problem is not an inviscid phenomenon, but results from approximate treatment of shock waves inherent in the conservative potential model. A new bound on the limit of validity of the conservative potential model is proposed

Modeling the Field Emission Current Fluctuation in Carbon Nanotube Thin Films

Owing to their distinct properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as promising candidate for field emission devices. It has been found experimentally that the results related to the field emission performance show variability. The design of an efficient field emitting device requires the analysis of the variabilities with a systematic and multiphysics based modeling approach. In this paper, we develop a model of randomly oriented CNTs in a thin film by coupling the field emission phenomena, the electron-phonon transport and the mechanics of single isolated CNT. A computational scheme is developed by which the states of CNTs are updated in time incremental manner. The device current is calculated by using Fowler-Nordheim equation for field emission to study the performance at the device scale.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Surface plasmon peak intensity dependence on the oxygen coverage at metal surfaces

    Get PDF
The dependence of the surface plasmon peak intensity on a submonolayer coverage of oxygen in the reflection electron energy loss spectra has been investigated for non-monocrystalline aluminium, magnesium, and indium surfaces. It will be shown that the decrease of the surface plasmon peaks can be related to a modification of the surface plasmons dispersion relation. A simple model for this modification introduced by changes of the surface electron density profile is proposed. Parameters of this model will be determined from experimental data

Study of Combined Cleaning Process of Sunroot Tubers

Elaboration and improvement of the process of raw material cleaning is an urgent scientifically technical process. The one of most prospective directions of vegetables cleaning process intensification is the elaboration of combined methods of their cleaning. The improvement of tubers cleaning process is based on the combination of thermal processing of sunroot tubers by steam and the process of further mechanical additional cleaning. The experimental studies of the influence of parameters of the process of sunroot thermal processing by steam on a tuber surface layer transformation were carried out. The influence of the steam pressure and the duration of the process of tubers thermal processing on the depth of the thermal processing of tuber surface layer and also on the effectiveness of the peel separation were studied. At the same time there were realized the studies as to the influence of the duration of tubers mechanical additional cleaning process on cleaning quality parameters. The experimental apparatus and correspondent method that allow to carry out investigations of the combined process of sunroot tubers cleaning with a possibility to determine the influence of all its parameters on the percent of raw material losses and cleaning quality were elaborated. Rational regimes of the combined process of sunroot tubers cleaning were established

Manipulation of the Landeˊ\acute{\text{e}} g-factor in InAs quantum dots through the application of anisotropic gate potentials: Exact diagonalization, numerical and perturbation methods

We study the variation in the Landeˊ\acute{\text{e}} g-factor of electron spins induced by both anisotropic gate potentials and magnetic fields in InAs quantum dots for possible implementation towards solid state quantum computing. In this paper, we present analytical expressions and numerical simulations of the variation in the Landeˊ\acute{\text{e}} g-factor for both isotropic and anisotropic quantum dots. Using both analytical techniques and numerical simulations, we show that the Rashba spin-orbit coupling has a major contribution in the variation of the g-factor with electric fields before the regime, where level crossing or anticrossing occurs. In particular, the electric field tunability is shown to cover a wide range of g-factor through strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Another major result of this paper is that the anisotropic gate potential gives quenching effect in the orbital angular momentum that reduces the variation in the E-field and B-field tunability of the g-factor if the area of the symmetric and asymmetric quantum dots is held constant. We identify level crossings and anticrossings of the electron states in the variation of the Landeˊ\acute{\text{e}} g-factor. We model the wavefunctions of electron spins and estimate the size of the anticrossing for the spin states 0,1,+1/2>|0,-1,+1/2> and 0,0,1/2>|0,0,-1/2> corresponding to a quantum dot that has been recently studied experimentally (Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 246801 (2010)).Comment: 9 pages and 8 figure

Role of Blended Learning in Higher Education: Students’ “First Steps” to Precarious Work and Social Life

Introduction. The discussion of the challenges and consequences of permanent crises for university life from the point of view of students is centered around the problem of quality of higher education. The author proposes to measure it in the context of the transition of Russian universities to the model of blended learning through the indicator of perception of learning formats. The aim of the article is to determine the parameters of positive and negative attitudes of potential students to higher education with online elements, to highlight its advantages and disadvantages. Materials and Methods. The answers to these questions are based on empirical research data: the results of an online survey conducted in 2021–2022 among full-time undergraduate and graduate applicants to one of the largest Russian universities; additional surveys conducted by the authors in 2015 (using a similar methodology); semi-structured interviews conducted at the end of the academic year with first-year students from among those surveyed in the quantitative study in 2021, university graduates (using a similar methodology); semi-structured interviews conducted at the end of the academic year with first-year students from among those surveyed in the quantitative research in 2021, university graduates working in the digital sphere in 2021. Results. The results of the study showed that students’ positive attitudes towards blended and online learning are constantly increasing, with this result being characteristic of undergraduate students. Flexible learning is gradually becoming a more natural process of higher education in students’ perception. The interviews provide insights into students’ greater engagement in a blended learning educational environment. Such experiences increase their adaptability to changing work content. The limitations of the blended learning model are related to the fact that conservative students (“pro” traditional education) have more stable orientations for self-realization in the specialty. Discussion and Conclusion. The conclusions made by the author contribute to the development of scientific ideas about the relationship between the labor market and higher education, where the preparation of young people for unstable employment and social life becomes a key task. An important role in blended learning is the development of elements of students’ agency through mastering digital skills, ability to plan in response to the challenges of instability of future work and social life. © 2023 National Research Ogarev Mordovia State University. “In the beginning was the Word”: words and deeds of Soviet economists in the book “Cognitive structures and political economy of socialism in the USSR”, ed. by P. A. Orekhovskii

Objective: to evaluate the work “Cognitive structures and political economy of socialism in the USSR”, ed. by P.A. Orekhovsky (St. Petersburg: Aleteya, 2022).Methods: textual analysis, methodological criticism. Results: the paper reviews a collective monograph by the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences devoted to the history of Soviet economic thought in the 1950s – first half of the 1980s. The novelty of the reviewed work consists in the methodological approach. It involves analyzing the peculiarities of speech practices and assumes that their result was the formation of a special cognitive structure, which development cycle had a decisive influence on political processes. Not being a tutorial, the work can be used as auxiliary educational material on the history of Soviet economy and economic thought. At the same time, the work contains a number of controversial points. In general, it presents an important contribution to a potential discussion of the past and present of the Russian economic science and the nature of late-Soviet and post-Soviet economic and social changes.Scientific novelty: the innovation of the work consists in the consistent application of the approach to the history of Soviet economic science, which implies blurring of a clear boundary between the subject and object of economic research. The originality of the methodological approach consists in the fact that it applies Western “postmodernism” to analyze such a unique object as the Soviet economic science.Practical significance: the work can be recommended to a wide range of specialists interested in the problems under consideration
