Orofacial complaints and complications of chemotherapy
Background: Oral complications of chemotherapy are sometimes unnoticed and if not treated, they can compromise patients' health and quality of life. Methods: This study aimed to assess and characterize orofacial complaints and complications, and their impact on the oral-health-related quality of life in patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy. Results: We evaluated 28 patients with solid tumors undergoing chemotherapy, through a systematic orofacial evaluation. Eighteen patients (64.2%) developed oral complications during chemotherapy and xerostomia scored the highest incidence n = 14 (50%). About oral health data, gingival index revealed greater part of patients classified with moderate or severe gingival inflammation. The mean plaque index was 25.6%. The mean CPOD index was 15.48 and was worse in patients without oral complications. The patients presented higher plaque index and the oral health impact profile showed higher mean index in the patients group that developed oral complications. Conclusion: These data reinforce the crucial role of the dentist in the multidisciplinary team, with crucial support in the diagnosis of oral complications. Thus, a specific assistance and relieve of patient's complaints could impact positively on quality of life
EFEITO DO AMIDO SOBRE AS CARACTERÍSTICAS TEXTURIAIS DE HAMBÚRGUER DE PEIXE: ANÁLISE SENSORIAL E INSTRUMENTAL
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of starch in the texture of fish burgers (surimi seafood) using starches from different botanical origins by sensory and instrumental analysis and to try to correlate the sensory and instrumental data. Three fish burger samples formulated with different types of starch were evaluated for texture by descriptive analysis and were subjected to instrumental texture profile analysis. On the basis of texture data (instrumental), formulation 3 (modified cassava starch) was categorized into a cluster representing a hard, gummy and chewy product. Sensory evaluation by a panel of eight judges categorized formulations 2 and 3 into a hard and springy product cluster. Hardness (instrumental) was positively correlated to sensory texture attributes such as hardness, springiness, gumminess, chewiness and fracturability. These sensory attributes can be used to describe fish burger that is perceived as hard during mastication.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do amido de diferentes origens botânicas na textura de hambúrguer de peixe (a base de surimi), mediante análises sensorial e instrumental, e correlacionar a informação sensorial com a instrumental. Três amostras de hambúrguer de peixe elaboradas com diferentes tipos de amido foram avaliadas por análise sensorial descritiva e análise instrumental. Em relação aos resultados de textura (instrumental), a formulação 3 (amido de mandioca modificado) foi caracterizada pelos atributos dureza, gomosidade e mastigabilidade. A análise sensorial realizada por equipe de 8 julgadores caracterizou as formulações 2 e 3 pelos atributos dureza e elasticidade. Verificou-se correlação positiva entre dureza (instrumental) e atributos sensoriais de textura, como dureza, elasticidade, gomosidade, mastigabilidade e fraturabilidade, contribuindo para a percepção da dureza durante a mastigação do hambúrguer de peixe
As Câmaras Municipais no Império Português: o exemplo do Rio de Janeiro
O presente artigo visa analisar o papel representado pelas Câmaras Municipais Ultrama-rinas no interior do Império Colonial Português. Ele centra sua análise sobre a Câmara do Rio de Janeiro ao longo dos séculos XVII e XVIII, no sentido de ilustrar a composição das municipalidades, suas funções rotineiras, sua ação nos tempos de crise e de guerra, e o tipo de suas demandas dirigidas aos representantes da Coroa nos dois lados do Atlântico. Enquanto centro político-administrativo, de imposição de tributos, de comércio e defesa, o Rio de Janeiro se tornou locus privilegiado do exercício do domínio metropolitano sobre a vasta região do Atlântico-Sul. Este artigo pretende discutir as tensões, negociações e compro-missos entre a política metropo-litana e o papel de uma das mais importantes municipalidades no mundo luso-americano.<br>The present article analises the role played by the overseas municipal councils in Portuguese Colonial Empire. It focus the Municipal Council of Rio de Janeiro during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, in order to illustrate the composition of the municipalities, their routine functions, their action in times of crisis and war, and the kind of it's demands to the Crown representatives on both sides of the Atlantic. As the center of political administration, tax collection, commerce, and defense, Rio de Janeiro was the privileged stage for the exercise of metropolian dominance over the vast South-Atlantic world. Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network
International audienceThe shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora
