    Hypovitaminosis D in dogs with spirocercosis

    BACKGROUND : Spirocercosis in dogs is characterized by esophageal nodules that can undergo neoplastic transformation. Hypovitaminosis D has been associated with neoplasia formation. We hypothesized hypovitaminosis D in neoplastic spirocercosis and that it could be a risk factor for neoplastic transformation. OBJECTIVE : To measure and compare vitamin D status, assessed by serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations in non-neoplastic (n = 25) and neoplastic (n = 26) spirocercosis client-owned dogs and healthy dogs (n = 24). ANIMALS : Twenty-five non-neoplastic dogs, 26 neoplastic dogs, and 24 healthy dogs. METHODS : Fifty-one dogs were randomly selected from 119 dogs diagnosed with spirocercosis presenting to our hospital, and further divided into non-neoplastic or neoplastic groups. Exclusion criteria included dogs less than 1 year old, with concurrent diseases, received corticosteroids, or treated prophylactically for spirocercosis. Serum 25(OH)D concentration was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Spirocercosis dogs’ appetites were graded and compared. RESULTS : Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were significantly different among all groups (P < .001). 25-Hydroxyvitamin D concentrations were significantly lower in neoplastic group (median 30.7 nmol/L [range 14.7–62.2]) compared to nonneoplastic (median 52.7 nmol/L [range 19.1–129.7, P < .05]) and healthy groups (median 74.6 nmol/L [range 37.4–130.5, P < .005]). 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations were significantly lower in non-neoplastic spirocercosis dogs compared to healthy ones (P < .05). Neoplastic and non-neoplastic spirocercosis dogs had similar appetite scores (P = 1.0). 25- Hydroxyvitamin D concentrations were not significantly different between dogs with normal (P = .087) and abnormal (P = .125) appetites within neoplastic and non-neoplastic spirocercosis groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE : Further studies are warranted to determine potential use of vitamin D treatment in spirocercosis and explore role of hypovitaminosis D in pathogenesis of malignant transformation.http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1939-1676hb2014mn201

    Whole blood manganese concentrations in dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts

    Background: Manganese (Mn) is an essential mineral that is a cofactor for many enzymes required in the synthesis of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. Because hepatic clearance is essential in Mn homeostasis, conditions in humans resulting in hepatic insufficiency including cirrhosis and both acquired and congenital portosystemic shunting have been reported to result in increased blood Mn concentrations and increased Mn content in the central nervous system. Because Mn toxicity causes neurologic disturbances, increased Mn concentrations have been implicated in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy. Hypotheses: Dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts (cPSS) have significantly higher whole blood Mn concentrations than do healthy dogs or those with nonhepatic illnesses. Animals: Eighteen dogs with cPSS, 26 dogs with nonhepatic illnesses, and 14 healthy dogs. Methods: Whole blood Mn was measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The diagnosis of cPSS was made by ultrasonography or during celiotomy either by visual inspection of a shunting vessel or portovenography. Results: Dogs with a cPSS had significantly higher whole blood Mn concentrations than did healthy dogs and dogs with nonhepatic illnesses. Whole blood Mn concentrations were not significantly different between healthy dogs and dogs with nonhepatic illnesses. Conclusion and Clinical Importance: Dogs with a cPSS have significantly increased whole blood Mn concentrations. Additional studies are warranted to investigate the role of Mn in cPSS‐associated hepatic encephalopathy

    Insulin concentrations in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism

    Hypoglycaemia is frequently identified in canine cases of hypoadrenocorticism. Potassium and glucose cellular uptake are intimately linked by insulin. We hypothesized that in canine hypoadrenocorticism, hyperkalaemia would stimulate insulin release as a protective mechanism, translocating potassium from the extracellular compartment to the intracellular compartment and also lower glucose concentrations. Serum insulin concentrations were measured in 11 consecutive cases of canine hypoadrenocorticism which were hyperkalaemic and 33 dogs with non-adrenal illness. There was no significant difference between insulin concentrations in the two populations, and no correlation between insulin and potassium concentration in the hypoadrenal group. Thus, no support for the hypothesis was found, although multiple other factors such as pH and osmolality may be obscuring an effect

    Similar challenges, different approaches: a review of student support systems in UK veterinary schools

    The characteristics of individuals pursuing a veterinary career, and the negative impact of undergraduate training, have been suggested as possible contributing factors to poor mental wellbeing in the profession (Bartram and Baldwin 2010). Therefore, veterinary students may be a vulnerable student population (Collins and Foote 2005, Hafen and others 2006, Sutton 2007). On-site counselling services were offered at approximately half the American veterinary schools in 2001 (Kogan and McConnell 2001). The aim of this study was to collate information on support systems in UK veterinary schools. A web-based questionnaire (Survey Monkey, Palo Alto, California, USA; freely available at www.surveymonkey.com) was electronically delivered to the Heads of Teaching at all UK Veterinary Schools in August 2011 which contained 16 closed (10 with additional free text option) and 13 open multiple choice questions. Questions included where on campus student teaching was undertaken, the distance of the school from the main campus, and the availability and types of counselling and other support services offered. Responses were received from all seven UK schools, although details of student support were received from only six schools. Veterinary teaching was undertaken at both the main university and a separate veterinary campus at four schools, exclusively at a separate veterinary campus at two schools and solely at the main university campus by one school.     Immunohistochemical characterization of lymphocyte and myeloid cell infiltrates in spirocercosis-induced oesophageal nodules

    Spirocerca lupi is a nematode that infects the dog’s oesophagus and promotes the formation of an inflammatory fibroblastic nodule that progresses to sarcoma in approximately 25% of cases. Spirocercosis-associated oesophageal sarcoma is an excellent and under-utilized spontaneous model of parasite-associated malignancy. The inflammatory infiltrate of paraffin-embedded, non-neoplastic oesophageal nodules (n = 46), neoplastic nodules (n = 25) and normal oesophagus (n = 14) was examined by immunohistochemistry using MAC387 (myeloid cells), CD3 (T cells), Pax5 (B cells) and FoxP3 (T regulatory cells) antibodies. Myeloid cells predominated in 70% of nodules, in pockets around the worms’ migratory tracts and in necro-ulcerative areas in neoplastic cases. T cells predominated in 23% of cases with a focal or diffuse distribution, in the nodule periphery. No significant differences were observed between neoplastic and non-neoplastic stages. FoxP3+ cells were observed in low numbers, not significantly different from the controls. The inflammation in spirocercosis is characterized by pockets of pus surrounded by organized lymphoid foci. There was no evidence of a local accumulation of FoxP3+ cells, unlike many previous studies that have reported an increase in FoxP3+ T cells in both malignancies and parasite infections.     The effectiveness of 3D animations to enhance understanding of cranial cruciate ligament rupture

    Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is one of the most important orthopedic diseases taught to veterinary undergraduates. The complexity of the anatomy of the canine stifle joint combined with the plethora of different surgical interventions available for the treatment of the disease means that undergraduate veterinary students often have a poor understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of CCL rupture. We designed, developed, and tested a three dimensional (3D) animation to illustrate the pertinent clinical anatomy of the stifle joint, the effects of CCL rupture, and the mechanisms by which different surgical techniques can stabilize the joint with CCL rupture. When compared with a non-animated 3D presentation, students' short-term retention of functional anatomy improved although they could not impart a better explanation of how different surgical techniques worked. More students found the animation useful than those who viewed a comparable non-animated 3D presentation. Multiple peer-review testing is required to maximize the usefulness of 3D animations during development. Free and open access to such tools should improve student learning and client understanding through wide-spread uptake and use
