    As most employers appear to make decisions to offer EHI from an economic perspective, research has yet to demonstrate how such decisions could potentially contribute to higher turnover rates as indicated by job-mobility of workers, especially among employees with disabilities. This research brief describes the results from the analysis of large national survey data examining the relationship between employer-paid health insurance and the likelihood of job-change for people with and without disabilities

    Research Brief: The Role of Tasks and Skills in Explaining the Disability Pay Gap

    A disparity in pay exists between workers with and without disabilities. This gap persists even in analyses that control for a variety of factors and incorporate compensation benefits other than wages and salaries. To better understand the underlying sources of these differences, occupation-level data on employee skill and task requirements are considered. Evaluating the earnings gap with this additional information provides insights regarding the economic returns to certain workplace tasks and skills that may contribute to the earnings gap that we observe for people with disabilities

    The workshop was held at the Census Bureau’s Headquarters in Suitland, MD.A workshop that brought together university-based researchers, members of the international official statistical community, and other interested user communities was held on July 31, 2009, the Friday before the 2009 Joint Statistical Meetings in Washington DC at the U.S. Census Bureau's Headquarters building in Suitland, MD. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss and critique newly created public-use micro-data files that are based on the concepts of “synthetic data” and “partially synthetic data.”Funding for the conference and its preparation were provided by National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant SES-0922494, the U.S. Census Bureau's Center for Economic Studies, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the Edmund Ezra Day Professorship at Cornell University

We briefly describe several of the most respected and up-to-date sources of data on entrepreneurs, the self-employed, and small businesses. More information including estimates of recent trends in business ownership and performance (e.g. survival rates, sales, employment, payroll, profits and industry) from these datasets is contained in Fairlie and Robb (2008)

    Age and Disability Employment Discrimination: Occupational Rehabilitation Implications

    Introduction As concerns grow that a thinning labor force due to retirement will lead to worker shortages, it becomes critical to support positive employment outcomes of groups who have been underutilized, specifically older workers and workers with disabilities. Better understanding perceived age and disability discrimination and their intersection can help rehabilitation specialists and employers address challenges expected as a result of the evolving workforce. Methods Using U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Integrated Mission System data, we investigate the nature of employment discrimination charges that cite the Americans with Disabilities Act or Age Discrimination in Employment Act individually or jointly. We focus on trends in joint filings over time and across categories of age, types of disabilities, and alleged discriminatory behavior. Results We find that employment discrimination claims that originate from older or disabled workers are concentrated within a subset of issues that include reasonable accommodation, retaliation, and termination. Age-related disabilities are more frequently referenced in joint cases than in the overall pool of ADA filings, while the psychiatric disorders are less often referenced in joint cases. When examining charges made by those protected under both the ADA and ADEA, results from a logit model indicate that in comparison to charges filed under the ADA alone, jointly-filed ADA/ADEA charges are more likely to be filed by older individuals, by those who perceive discrimination in hiring and termination, and to originate from within the smallest firms. Conclusion In light of these findings, rehabilitation and workplace practices to maximize the hiring and retention of older workers and those with disabilities are discussed
