    Third quantization: a general method to solve master equations for quadratic open Fermi systems

    The Lindblad master equation for an arbitrary quadratic system of n fermions is solved explicitly in terms of diagonalization of a 4n x 4n matrix, provided that all Lindblad bath operators are linear in the fermionic variables. The method is applied to the explicit construction of non-equilibrium steady states and the calculation of asymptotic relaxation rates in the far from equilibrium problem of heat and spin transport in a nearest neighbor Heisenberg XY spin 1/2 chain in a transverse magnetic field.Comment: 24 pages, with 8 eps figures - few minor corrections to the published version, e.g. anti-symmetrizing the matrix given by eq.     Intestinal resections are commonly performed to treat different colorectal conditions, including colorectal cancer. A successful primary anastomosis is the desired optimal outcome after intestinal resection. Maintaining adequate blood flow across the anastomosis is paramount for reducing anastomotic failure. Currently, there are no clinical devices capable of continuously assessing blood flow and blood perfusion at an anastomosis during and after surgery. The aim of this study was to develop an indwelling optical sensor for the monitoring of perfusion biomarkers using photoplethysmography and near-infrared spectroscopy principles. In an animal in-vivo proof-of-principle study, it was found that the developed sensor performed appropriately for the assessment of blood flow and perfusion in an anastomosis, showing changes in the assessed parameters after gradual devascularization of the transected bowel

    The apolipoprotein ϔ4 allele in Parkinson\u27s disease with and without dementia

    The ϔ4 isoform of apolipoprotein E (Apo-E) may confer genetic susceptibility for familial and sporadic Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD). Because dementia in AD and Parkinson\u27s disease (PD) share many biologic and clinical features, we determined the Apo-E genotypes for 79 patients with PD, 22 of whom were demented, and for 44 age-matched healthy elderly controls from the same community. We hypothesized that if the dementia was similar to AD, there would be a higher allele frequency of apolipoprotein ϔ4 (Apoϔ4) in demented PD patients compared with nondemented PD patients and controls. The ϔ4 allele frequency for PD without dementia was 0.132, for PD with dementia, 0.068, and for controls, 0.102. There was no association between Apoϔ4 and dementia in the PD patients. We conclude that the biologic basis for dementia in PD may differ from that of AD

    Many IVF clinics use endometrial thickness as a predictive factor for IVF outcomes, as research has shown a positive association between endometrial thickness and favorable IVF outcomes. A thickness of 6-8 mm is often used as a cut-off in for the decision of whether or not to transfer an embryo in both fresh and frozen cycles. However, prior studies investigating the relationship between a thin endometrium and IVF outcomes have overwhelmingly been performed in fresh cleavage stage embryo transfers.     Mammary ductal morphogenesis during prepuberty occurs mainly in response to insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and estradiol stimulation. Dairy heifers infected with gastrointestinal nematodes have reduced IGF-1 levels, accompanied by reduced growth rate, delayed puberty onset, and lower parenchyma-stroma relationship in their mammary glands. Immunohistochemical studies were undertaken to determine variations in cell division rate, IGF-1 system components, and estradiol receptors (ESR) during peripubertal development in the mammary glands of antiparasitic-treated and untreated Holstein heifers naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. Mammary biopsies were taken at 20, 30, 40, and 70 wk of age. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunolabeling, evident in nuclei, tended to be higher in the parenchyma of the glands from treated heifers than in those from untreated. Insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBP) type 2 and type 3 immunolabeling was cytoplasmic and was evident in stroma and parenchyma. The IGFBP2-labeled area was lower in treated than in untreated heifers. In the treated group, a maximal expression of this protein was seen at 40 wk of age, whereas in the untreated group the labeling remained constant. No differences were observed for IGFBP3 between treatment groups or during development. Immunolabeling for α ESR (ESR1) was evident in parenchymal nuclei and was higher in treated than in untreated heifers. In the treated group, ESR1 peaked at 30 wk of age and then decreased.
