Convenient sampling and questionnaire survey was used to investigate the relationship among self-appraisals, others’ actual appraisals, and reflected appraisals on the teaching ability of 40 primary school teachers. The results of the study indicated that primary school teachers’ selfappraisals on teaching ability was obviously below others’ actual appraisals; generalized others had more influence on the self-appraisals of primary school teachers than specific others; primary school teachers’ reflected appraisals could influence their self-appraisals; and others’ actual appraisals could not directly influence self-appraisals. Consequently, we should pay more attention in developing the primary school teachers’ reflective ability, change the current way of teaching reflection, improve the influence of others’ actual appraisals on self-appraisals, and enhance the validity of teaching reflection

In the title heteronuclear ZnII–EuIII complex [systematic name: {6,6′-dimethoxy-2,2′-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(nitrilomethylidyne)]diphenolato-κ4 O 1,O 1′,O 6,O 6′:2κ4 O 1,N,N′,O 1′}-μ-nitrato-1:2κ2 O:O′-dinitrato-1κ4 O,O′-europium(III)zinc(II)], [EuZn(C18H18N2O4)(NO3)3], with the hexadentate Schiff base compartmental ligand N,N′-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)ethylenediamine (H2 L), the Eu and Zn atoms are triply bridged by two phenolate O atoms of the Schiff base ligand and one nitrate ion. The five-coordinate Zn atom is in a square-pyramidal geometry with the donor centers of two imine N atoms, two phenolate O atoms and one of the bridging nitrate O atoms. The EuIII center has a ninefold coordination environment of O atoms, involving the phenolate O atoms, two methoxy O atoms, two O atoms from two nitrate ions and one from the bridging nitrate ion. Weak intermolecular C—H⋯O interactions generate a two-dimensional double-layer structure

Insomnia is a serious worldwide health problem that is often comorbid with anxiety. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a Chinese formula containing Suan Zao Ren Tang (SZRT) and Zhi Zi Chi Tang (ZZCT; SZR-ZZC) for improving sleep quality and anxiety states with four indices of Polysomnography (PSG), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Self Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Methods. A randomized, parallel-controlled trial compared SZR-ZZC to lorazepam tablet in insomniacs with anxiety. Patients were randomized to the SZR-ZZC treatment group (n=60) and the lorazepam tablet treatment group (n=59). Results. SZR-ZZC significantly improved scores on all four treatment indices. Compared with lorazepam, treatment with SZR-ZZC resulted in a significant reduction in the ISI (P=0.029), the PSQI (P=0.017), and wake after sleep onset (WASO; P=0.008) scores and improved sleep architecture (P=0.000–0.003) after a 4-week treatment period. Only one subject in the SZR-ZZC group experienced adverse side effects. Conclusion. Treatment with SZR-ZZC for 4 weeks appears to be a relatively safe and effective complementary therapeutic option when aiming to improve sleep quality and anxiety in insomniacs with anxiety

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Streptococcus pneumoniae </it>serotype 14 is one of the most common pneumococcal serotypes that cause invasive pneumococcal diseases worldwide. Serotype 14 often expresses resistance to a variety of antimicrobial agents, resulting in difficulties in treatment. To gain insight into the evolution of virulence and antimicrobial resistance traits in <it>S. pneumoniae </it>from the genome level, we sequenced the entire genome of a serotype 14 isolate (CGSP14), and carried out comprehensive comparison with other pneumococcal genomes. Multiple serotype 14 clinical isolates were also genotyped by multilocus sequence typing (MLST).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Comparative genomic analysis revealed that the CGSP14 acquired a number of new genes by horizontal gene transfer (HGT), most of which were associated with virulence and antimicrobial resistance and clustered in mobile genetic elements. The most remarkable feature is the acquisition of two conjugative transposons and one resistance island encoding eight resistance genes. Results of MLST suggested that the major driving force for the genome evolution is the environmental drug pressure.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The genome sequence of <it>S. pneumoniae </it>serotype 14 shows a bacterium with rapid adaptations to its lifecycle in human community. These include a versatile genome content, with a wide range of mobile elements, and chromosomal rearrangement; the latter re-balanced the genome after events of HGT.</p

Purpose: To explore the structural characteristics and antioxidant properties of proteins extracted by salt extraction and ammonium sulfate precipitation (SEAP) from the larvae of Bombyx mori L. (PLB) that died due to infection with Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. Methods: The extraction yield of PLB was measured, and protein patterns were examined by SDSPAGE. The amino acid composition of PLB was analyzed using an automatic amino acid analyzer while the structural characteristics of PLB were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and UV techniques. In addition, the antioxidant properties of PLB were investigated in vitro. Results: The extraction yield of PLB was 2.16 ± 0.04 %. PLB protein was mainly present in 10 – 20 and 25 – 35 kDa fractions. PLB consisted of 15 types of amino acids. Glu (12.45 ± 0.06), Ala (6.87 ± 0.11) and Val (4.55 ± 0.11) contents of PLB were significantly (p &lt; 0.05) higher relative to that of other amino acids. PLB exhibited the FT-IR and UV spectra characteristics of proteins. In addition, PLB exhibited significant antioxidant effects (p &lt; 0.05).Conclusion: The results indicate that PLB exhibits significant antioxidant effects and may be suitable for development into antioxidant drugs. Keywords: Bombyx mori L., Proteins, Structural characteristics, Antioxidant, Beauveria bassian

An investigation on influential factors of patient-controlled epidural analgesic requirement over time for upper abdominal surgeries

Abstract Background: Patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) is commonly used to relieve postoperative pain for upper abdominal surgeries. However, there is still a lack of studies exploring factors associated with PCEA consumption over time after upper abdominal surgery; our study intended to provide further elucidation about this issue. Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated postoperative PCEA consumption over time after upper abdominal surgery. Cumulative PCEA consumption in the first four 12-hour intervals was directly retrieved from the data recorded by infusion pumps. Potentially influential factors of PCEA requirements, including demographic variables and infusion pump settings, were also collected. A linear mixed model was applied to investigate the relationships between these factors and PCEA consumption over time. A backward elimination strategy was used to select independent factors significantly associated with PCEA consumption. Results: A total of 1001 patients were included in the analysis. On average, PCEA consumption after upper abdominal surgery peaked during the 2 nd 12-hour interval and then decreased gradually over time. After the model selection processes were completed, four independent factors were identified to have significant effects on PCEA consumption. Surgery for malignant disease and background infusion rate were positively associated with PCEA consumption and did not interact with time. Additionally, female patients tended to consume less and less PCEA over time relative to males. Age had a negative effect on PCEA consumption, which peaked during the 2 nd 12-hour interval and then decreased gradually over time. The final selected model exhibited acceptable predictive power relative to the observed data. Conclusion: Our analyses provided valuable information about the factors associated with PCEA consumption over time after upper abdominal surgery. However, the mechanism of how these factors interact over the course of time awaits further investigation

Eosinophils from murine lamina propria induce differentiation of naïve T cells into regulatory T cells via TGF-β1 and retinoic acid

Treg cells play a crucial role in immune tolerance, but mechanisms that induce Treg cells are poorly understood. We here have described eosinophils in lamina propria (LP) that displayed high aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, a rate-limiting step during all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) synthesis, and expressed TGF-β1 mRNA and high levels of ATRA. Co-incubation assay confirmed that LP eosinophils induced the differentiation of naïve T cells into Treg cells. Differentiation promoted by LP eosinophils were inhibited by blocked either TGF-β1 or ATRA. Peripheral blood (PB) eosinophils did not produce ATRA and could not induce Treg differentiation. These data identifies LP eosinophils as effective inducers of Treg cell differentiation through a mechanism dependent on TGF-β1 and ATRA
