WOS: 000337913500015PubMed ID: 24856491Purpose: We aimed to determine the differences of the urodynamic findings of mix urinary incontinence (MUI), urge urinary incontinence (UUI), and stress urinary incontinence (SUI), and to evaluate the urodynamic findings in different groups by using bladder sensitivity index (BSI). Materials and Methods: The data of 99 patients who underwent urodynamic testing related to the suspicion of SUI, UUI or MUI were analysed. This analysis included a retrospective evaluation of patients' cards, voiding diaries, and urodynamic reports. At filling cystometry, the parameters of first sensation of bladder filling (FSBF), first desire to void (FDV), strong desire to void (SDV), and bladder capacity (V-max)(,) which were related to the bladder sensation, were determined. Subsequently, uroflowmetric findings were recorded during bladder emptying. BSI was defined as the ratio of V-max/FDV. These results were statistically compared among the goups. Results: The sample included 35(35.5%) MUI, 33(33.3%) UUI and 31 (31.1%) SUI. The mean ages were similar in all groups (P = 0.868). The mean FSBF, FDV, SDV and Vmax values were significantly different among groups (p = 0.004, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001 respectively). Nevertheless, there was no statistically significant difference among the mean daily voiding accounts (P = 0.005). Although the mean maximum flow rate (Q(max)) values were similar (P = 0.428), the mean maximum detrusor pressure (Pdet(max)) values were significantly different (P = 0.021). The mean BSI values showed no significant differences (P = 0.097). Conclusions: It was concluded that while the use of urodynamic testing could contribute to the management of urinary incontinence, the indexes including BSI requere more detailed and comprehensive studies

Purpose. Acute scrotal pain as the first symptom of brucellosis is rarely observed. We aimed to evaluate the data of male patients with brucellosis and epididymoorchitis as the initial diagnosis. Material and Methods. The data of seven patients presented with testicular pain, hyperemia, swelling, and increased fever were reviewed. Concomitant focal diseases as well as clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings were retrospectively evaluated. Results. The mean age of the patients was 22.28 ± 7.78 (16–35) years. All patients presented with scrotal pain, swelling, and increased sweating. Additional findings included fever, asthenia, arthralgia, dysuria, shiver and rash, weight loss, and vomiting in 6, 5, 4, 4, 3, 2, and 1 patient, respectively. In all of 7 patients, the agglutination tests of Rose-Bengal and Wright were positive. Coombs test was positive only in 3 patients. The patients underwent antibiotic and conservative treatment. No relapse was observed following the treatment. Conclusion. In endemic regions, epididymoorchitis caused by brucellosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with acute scrotal pain. Clinical and serological findings are sufficient for the diagnosis. Conservative management combined with antibiotic therapy is adequate for managing brucellar epididymoorchitis

Haptoglobin Levels in Turkish Patients with Bladder Cancer and its Association with Clinicopathological Features

Although alteration in the haptoglobin phenotype has been reported in patients with bladder cancer, serum haptoglobin levels have not been evaluated. We hypothesized that serum haptoglobin can be used as a biomarker. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of haptoglobin in bladder cancer and to determine the relationship with clinicopathological features. A total of 68 serum specimens obtained before surgery were used to investigate haptoglobin expression using the sandwich ELISA technique. Serum haptoglobin levels were higher in the patients with bladder cancer compared to healthy controls (p<0.0001). Additionally, the levels of haptoglobin protein increased with increasing tumor grades (p<0.001) and were significantly higher in patients with metastatic disease and the presence of lymphovascular involvement, lymph node metastases and increasing tumor burden (p<0.0001). This study suggests that elevated haptoglobin levels are associated with a higher stage, grade, and extent of distant metastasis and larger tumor size. Haptoglobin may therefore provide a useful diagnostic and treatment biomarker for patients with bladder cancer

ABSTRACT Aim: To evaluate the long term outcomes of temporary urethral stent placement for the treatment of recurrent bulbar urethral stricture. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight patients who underwent temporary polymer coated urethral stent placement due to recurrent bulbar urethral stricture between 2010 and 2014 were enrolled in the study. The long term outcomes of the patients were analyzed. Results: The mean age of the patients was 62.3±6.4 (44–81). The overall clinical success was achieved in 18 (64.2%) of the 28 patients at a median (range) follow-up of 29 (7–46) months. No patient reported discomfort at the stent site. Stone formation was observed at the urethral stent implantation area only in one patient. Stenosis occurred in the distal end of the stents in two patients and took place in bulbar urethra in seven patients after removed the stents. The mean maximum urine flow rates were 6.24±2.81mL/sec and 19.12±4.31mL/sec before and at 3 months after the procedure, respectively. Conclusion: In this study, the success rate of temporary urethral stent placement has remained at 64.2% at a median follow-up of 29 months. Therefore, our outcomes have not achieved desired success rate for the standard treatment of recurrent bulbar urethral stricture

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), which is a common and primary brain tumor in adults, is an important cause of death worldwide as an aggressive and treatment-resistant cancer tumor. In this cell culture study, the apoptotic and anti-proliferative effects of borax and irinotecan at different doses, alone or in combination, were investigated in the YKG1 cell line. Cytotoxic activities were analyzed by MTT method and TUNEL staining after 24th and 48th hours of incubation with borax administered at doses of 1mg and 3mg per ml; irinotecan 50mM and 100mM. Both irinotecan and borax have been shown to induce apoptosis when used alone, and thus cause anti-proliferation. It was determined that these effects were potentiated by the combined application of the agents. In addition, it was determined that this effect in combined applications was more pronounced after 48 hours and at higher doses. In light of the data obtained, the combination of irinotecan with borax to increase the cytotoxic effect of irinotecan, which is used in many different cancer types, can be tried in further prospective studies. Background: Evidence indicates that Dickkopf-1 (DKK-1) levels may be a biomarker for cancer risk. The aim of this study was to assess DKK-1 and its correlation with clinic-pathological features in patients with bladder cancer. Materials and Methods: DKK-1 levels were determined in serum samples from 90 patients with bladder cancer before transurethral tumor resection. The concentrations of DKK-1 were determined by using enzyme linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Elevated preoperative DKK-1 levels were associated with tumor stage (p<0.001), grade (p<0.001) and histological grade (p<0.001). Conclusions: The results of our study demonstrated that the level of serum DKK-1 is correlated with both disease progression and increase in the tumor grade. Preoperative serum DKK-1 elevation may thus represent a novel marker for the determination of bladder cancer and the detection of patients with a likely poor clinical outcome

Preoperative Levels of Matrix Metalloproteinase-7 and-9 and Tissue Inhibitor of Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 Relation to Pathologic Parameters in Bladder Carcinoma Patients

No full text
Our aim was to test the hypothesis that preoperative serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) and -9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP-1) levels correlate with pathological features. Serum levels of MMP-7, and MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were determined in 90 bladder cancer patients and 40 healthy controls using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Preoperative serum MMP-7 and MMP-9 levels were significantly higher in cancer patients than control groups (p<0.001). In contast, serum TIMP-1 levels were lower (p<0.001). Alteration in MMP-7, and MMP-9, and TIMP-1 production may contribute to tumor angiogenesis and be associated with clinic-pathological features
