Electric field gradients in s-, p- and d-metal diborides and the effect of pressure on the band structure and Tc_c in MgB2_2

Results of FLMTO-GGA (full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital -- generalized gradient approximation) calculations of the band structure and boron electric field gradients (EFG) for the new medium-Tc_c superconductor (MTSC), MgB2_2, and related diborides MB2_2, M=Be, Al, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mo and Ta are reported. The boron EFG variations are found to be related to specific features of their band structure and particularly to the M-B hybridization. The strong charge anisotropy at the B site in MgB2_2 is completely defined by the valence electrons - a property which sets MgB2_2 apart from other diborides. The boron EFG in MgB2_2 is weakly dependent of applied pressure: the B p electron anisotropy increases with pressure, but it is partly compensated by the increase of core charge assymetry. The concentration of holes in bonding σ\sigma bands is found to decrease slightly from 0.067 to 0.062 holes/B under a pressure of 10 GPa. Despite a small decrease of N(EF_F), the Hopfield parameter increases with pressure and we believe that the main reason for the reduction under pressure of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc_c, is the strong pressure dependence of phonon frequencies, which is sufficient to compensate the electronic effects.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

Orbital Ordering in Paramagnetic LaMnO3 and KCuF3

    Get PDF
{\it Ab-initio} studies of the stability of orbital ordering, its coupling to magnetic structure and its possible origins (electron-phonon and/or electron-electron interactions) are reported for two perovskite systems, LaMnO3_3 and KCuF3_3. We present a new Average Spin State (ASS) calculational scheme that allowed us to treat a paramagnetic state. Using this scheme, we succesfully described the experimental magnetic/orbital phase diagram of both LaMnO3_3 and KCuF3_3 in crystal structures when the Jahn-Teller distortions are neglected. Hence, we conclude that the orbital ordering in both compounds is purely electronic in origin.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Aim: to estimate postprandial disorders medical correction abilities in patients with metabolic syndrome with to-3 fatty acids and acarbose. Materials and methods. 115 patients with metabolic syndrome, organized population of gas processing workers, have been investigated (Surgut city LLC “Gazprom Pererabotka"). 55 of them had MS associated with impaired glucose tolerance. Results: Postprandial variations in patients with MS who received 1g. of co-3 fatty acids per day during 12 weeks, are characterized with less concentration of atherogenic lipid fractions (TC, LDL, TG), atherogenity coefficient reduction, insulin plasma level and significant increase of brachial arteria diameter. Postprandial variations in patients with MS in associated with glucose metabolism impairment who received 300 mg of acarbose per day during 12 weeks are characterized with less insulin resistance and system inflammation markers (C-RP, IL-6) increase accompanied with less flow - dependent vasodilatation and no differences in lipid profile atherogenity growth. Conclusion. We proved w-3 fatty acids efficacy in patients with metabolic syndrome for lipid profile correction and endothelial dysfunction, and 300 mg per day of acarbose in patients with MS and GTI for insulin resistance, system inflammation markers reduction, and vasodilatation endothelium function increase in postprandial period together with medical treatment during 12 weeks.

Elite opinion and foreign policy in post-communist Russia

    Get PDF
Russian elite opinion on matters of foreign policy may be classified as ‘Liberal Westerniser’, ‘Pragmatic Nationalist’ and ‘Fundamentalist Nationalist’, terms that reflect longstanding debates about the country’s relationship with the outside world. An analysis of press statements and election manifestoes together with a programme of elite interviews between 2004 and 2006 suggests a clustering of opinion on a series of strategic issues. Liberal Westernisers seek the closest possible relationship with Europe, and favour eventual membership of the EU and NATO. Pragmatic Nationalists are more inclined to favour practical co-operation, and do not assume an identity of values or interests with the Western countries. Fundamentalist Nationalists place more emphasis on the other former Soviet republics, and on Asia as much as Europe, and see the West as a threat to Russian values as well as to its state interests. Each of these positions, in turn, draws on an identifiable set of domestic constituencies: Liberal Westernisers on the promarket political parties, Pragmatic Nationalists on the presidential administration and defence and security ministries, and Fundamentalist Nationalists on the Orthodox Church and Communists

Dependence of the flux creep activation energy on current density and magnetic field for MgB2 superconductor

    Get PDF
Systematic ac susceptibility measurements have been performed on a MgB2_2 bulk sample. We demonstrate that the flux creep activation energy is a nonlinear function of the current density U(j)j0.2U(j)\propto j^{-0.2}, indicating a nonlogarithmic relaxation of the current density in this material. The dependence of the activation energy on the magnetic field is determined to be a power law U(B)B1.33U(B)\propto B^{-1.33}, showing a steep decline in the activation energy with the magnetic field, which accounts for the steep drop in the critical current density with magnetic field that is observed in MgB2_2. The irreversibility field is also found to be rather low, therefore, the pinning properties of this new material will need to be enhanced for practical applications.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Revtex forma

    Time-dependent CP Asymmetries in B0KS0ρ0γB^0\to K^0_S\rho^0\gamma Decays

We report the first measurement of CP-violation parameters in B^0 -> K_S^0\rho^0\gamma decays based on 657 million B\bar B pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider. We measure the time-dependent CP violating parameter S_{K_S^0\rho^0\gamma}= 0.11 +/- 0.33(stat.)^{+0.05}_{-0.09}(syst.). We also obtain the effective direct CP violating parameter A_eff=0.05 +/- 0.18(stat.) +/- 0.06(syst.) for m_{K_S\pi^+\pi^-}<1.8 GeV/c^2 and 0.6 GeV/c^2<m_{\pi^+\pi^-}<0.9 GeV/c^2.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to be submitted to PR
