Migrant workers and human resource development practices in the hotel sector: a case of Cyprus
Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the human resource development (HRD) practices amongst migrant workers using a cross-national survey. The literature review has shown that there is a need to provide a comprehensive understanding of the significance of HRD in the hotel sector and its role in developing migrant workers skills. Moreover, hotels that have training and development opportunities tend to support their employees in training their people-to-people and other soft skills.
Design/methodology/approach: This study adopted a quantitative approach using a self-administered questionnaire, employing a purposive sampling strategy to target key participants (hotel managers/supervisor/owners) across Cyprus.
Findings: The findings show that most hotels only provide operational, informal level training to all their migrant workers. The key findings present a sector that currently does not plan for sustainable HRD practices and learning with casualisation being the dominant strategy to cope with changing demand for labour. Those few hotels that do have long-term HRD practices have seen an impact on their organisational performance as well as increased migrant workers skills.
Practical implications: In practice, Cypriot hotels need to focus their attention on their long-term strategic goals. The development of their migrant employees may help enhance organisational performance in the long-term. However, further research is needed to explore current perceptions amongst migrant workers and how they perceive their long-term role in the industry.
Originality/value: This paper contributes to the existing HRD literature since the training and development of migrant employees in Cypriot hotels have not been researched during the recession. HRD insights will enable policy makers and employers to improve current training infrastructure for migrant workers and add to the debate around the importance of HRD strategy in advancing organisational performance in such a transformational business environment
Reflecting on the experiential journey: Creating, developing and understanding leadership in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within a Faculty
London South Bank University (LSBU) appointed equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) leads
in each of its Schools in 2021/22. The leaders’ remit was to deliver and embed LSBU’s EDI
strategy cognisant of the uniqueness of the Schools. LSBU’s pioneering EDI strategy has
been recognised as a symbol of excellence and shortlisted for two national EDI awards. The
composition of LSBU’s academic senior management does not yet fully reflect the
intersectional diversity of the organisation. Therefore, this session aims to share the
experience of LSBU’s EDI leads and facilitate discussion about the benchmarks for
achieving leadership in EDI within a School
Long-Lived Neutralino NLSPs
We investigate the collider signatures of heavy, long-lived, neutral
particles that decay to charged particles plus missing energy. Specifically, we
focus on the case of a neutralino NLSP decaying to Z and gravitino within the
context of General Gauge Mediation. We show that a combination of searches
using the inner detector and the muon spectrometer yields a wide range of
potential early LHC discoveries for NLSP lifetimes ranging from 10^(-1)-10^5
mm. We further show that events from Z(l+l-) can be used for detailed kinematic
reconstruction, leading to accurate determinations of the neutralino mass and
lifetime. In particular, we examine the prospects for detailed event study at
ATLAS using the ECAL (making use of its timing and pointing capabilities)
together with the TRT, or using the muon spectrometer alone. Finally, we also
demonstrate that there is a region in parameter space where the Tevatron could
potentially discover new physics in the delayed Z(l+l-)+MET channel. While our
discussion centers on gauge mediation, many of the results apply to any
scenario with a long-lived neutral particle decaying to charged particles.Comment: 31 pages, 12 figure
The RMS Survey: Far-Infrared Photometry of Young Massive Stars
Context: The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey is a multi-wavelength campaign of
follow-up observations of a colour-selected sample of candidate massive young
stellar objects (MYSOs) in the galactic plane. This survey is returning the
largest well-selected sample of MYSOs to date, while identifying other dust
contaminant sources with similar mid-infrared colours including a large number
of new ultra-compact (UC)HII regions. Aims:To measure the far-infrared (IR)
flux, which lies near the peak of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of
MYSOs and UCHII regions, so that, together with distance information, the
luminosity of these sources can be obtained. Methods:Less than 50% of RMS
sources are associated with IRAS point sources with detections at 60 micron and
100 micron, though the vast majority are visible in Spitzer MIPSGAL or IRAS
Galaxy Atlas (IGA) images. However, standard aperture photometry is not
appropriate for these data due to crowding of sources and strong spatially
variable far-IR background emission in the galactic plane. A new technique
using a 2-dimensional fit to the background in an annulus around each source is
therefore used to obtain far-IR photometry for young RMS sources.
Results:Far-IR fluxes are obtained for a total of 1113 RMS candidates
identified as young sources. Of these 734 have flux measurements using IGA 60
micron and 100 micron images and 724 using MIPSGAL 70 micron images, with 345

Disk-Loss and Disk Renewal Phases in Classical Be Stars II. Detailed Analysis of Spectropolarimetric Data
In Wisniewski et al. 2010, paper I, we analyzed 15 years of spectroscopic and
spectropolarimetric data from the Ritter and Pine Bluff Observatories of 2 Be
stars, 60 Cygni and {\pi} Aquarii, when a transition from Be to B star
occurred. Here we anaylize the intrinsic polarization, where we observe
loop-like structures caused by the rise and fall of the polarization Balmer
Jump and continuum V-band polarization being mismatched temporally with
polarimetric outbursts. We also see polarization angle deviations from the
mean, reported in paper I, which may be indicative of warps in the disk, blobs
injected at an inclined orbit, or spiral density waves. We show our ongoing
efforts to model time dependent behavior of the disk to constrain the
phenomena, using 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer codes.Comment: 2 pages, 6 figures, IAU Symposium 27
Pseudomoduli Dark Matter
We point out that pseudomoduli -- tree-level flat directions that often
accompany dynamical supersymmetry breaking -- can be natural candidates for
TeV-scale dark matter in models of gauge mediation. The idea is general and can
be applied to different dark matter scenarios, including (but not limited to)
those of potential relevance to recent cosmic ray anomalies. We describe the
requirements for a viable model of pseudomoduli dark matter, and we analyze two
example models to illustrate the general mechanism -- one where the
pseudomoduli carry Higgsino-like quantum numbers, and another where they are SM
singlets but are charged under a hidden-sector gauge group.Comment: 20 pages, refs adde
Higgs Messengers
We explore the consequences of the Higgs fields acting as messengers of
supersymmetry breaking. The hidden-sector paradigm in the gauge mediation
framework is relaxed by allowing two types of gauge-invariant, renormalizable
operators that are typically discarded: direct coupling between the Higgses and
supersymmetry breaking singlets, and Higgs-messenger mixing terms. The most
important phenomenological consequence is a flavor-dependent shift in sfermion
masses. This is from a one-loop contribution, which we compute for a general
set of weak doublet messengers. We also study a couple of explicit models in
detail, finding that precision electroweak constraints can be satisfied with a
spectrum significantly different from that of gauge mediation.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
Phenomenology of the Littlest Higgs with T-Parity
Little Higgs models offer an interesting approach to weakly coupled
electroweak symmetry breaking without fine tuning. The original little Higgs
models were plagued by strong constraints from electroweak precision data which
required a fine tuning to be reintroduced. An economical solution to this
problem is to introduce a discrete symmetry (analogous to R-parity of SUSY)
called T-parity. T-parity not only eliminates most constraints from electroweak
precision data, but it also leads to a promising dark matter candidate. In this
paper we investigate the dark matter candidate in the littlest Higgs model with
T-parity. We find bounds on the symmetry breaking scale f as a function of the
Higgs mass by calculating the relic density. We begin the study of the LHC
phenomenology of the littlest Higgs model with T-parity. We find that the model
offers an interesting collider signature that has a generic missing energy
signal which could "fake" SUSY at the LHC. We also investigate the properties
of the heavy partner of the top quark which is common to all littlest Higgs
models, and how its properties are modified with the introduction of T-parity.
We include an appendix with a list of Feynman rules specific to the littlest

Floating stones off El Hierro, Canary Islands: xenoliths of pre-island sedimentary origin in the early products of the October 2011 eruption
The eruption that started off the south coast of El Hierro, Canary Islands, in October 2011 has emitted intriguing eruption products found floating in the sea. These specimens appeared as floating volcanic "bombs" that have in the meantime been termed "restingolites" (after the close-by village of La Restinga) and exhibit cores of white and porous pumice-like material. Currently the nature and origin of these "floating stones" is vigorously debated among researchers, with important implications for the interpretation of the hazard potential of the ongoing eruption. The "restingolites" have been proposed to be either (i) juvenile high-silica magma (e.g. rhyolite), (ii) remelted magmatic material (trachyte), (iii) altered volcanic rock, or (iv) reheated hyaloclastites or zeolite from the submarine slopes of El Hierro. Here, we provide evidence that supports yet a different conclusion. We have collected and analysed the structure and composition of samples and compared the results to previous work on similar rocks found in the archipelago. Based on their high silica content, the lack of igneous trace element signatures, and the presence of remnant quartz crystals, jasper fragments and carbonate relicts, we conclude that "restingolites" are in fact xenoliths from pre-island sedimentary rocks that were picked up and heated by the ascending magma causing them to partially melt and vesiculate. They hence represent messengers from depth that help us to understand the interaction between ascending magma and crustal lithologies in the Canary Islands as well as in similar Atlantic islands that rest on sediment/covered ocean crust (e.g. Cape Verdes, Azores). The occurrence of these "restingolites" does therefore not indicate the presence of an explosive high-silica magma that is involved in the ongoing eruption
