Using Flow Specifications of Parameterized Cache Coherence Protocols for Verifying Deadlock Freedom
We consider the problem of verifying deadlock freedom for symmetric cache
coherence protocols. In particular, we focus on a specific form of deadlock
which is useful for the cache coherence protocol domain and consistent with the
internal definition of deadlock in the Murphi model checker: we refer to this
deadlock as a system- wide deadlock (s-deadlock). In s-deadlock, the entire
system gets blocked and is unable to make any transition. Cache coherence
protocols consist of N symmetric cache agents, where N is an unbounded
parameter; thus the verification of s-deadlock freedom is naturally a
parameterized verification problem. Parametrized verification techniques work
by using sound abstractions to reduce the unbounded model to a bounded model.
Efficient abstractions which work well for industrial scale protocols typically
bound the model by replacing the state of most of the agents by an abstract
environment, while keeping just one or two agents as is. However, leveraging
such efficient abstractions becomes a challenge for s-deadlock: a violation of
s-deadlock is a state in which the transitions of all of the unbounded number
of agents cannot occur and so a simple abstraction like the one above will not
preserve this violation. In this work we address this challenge by presenting a
technique which leverages high-level information about the protocols, in the
form of message sequence dia- grams referred to as flows, for constructing
invariants that are collectively stronger than s-deadlock. Efficient
abstractions can be constructed to verify these invariants. We successfully
verify the German and Flash protocols using our technique
Generating Non-Linear Interpolants by Semidefinite Programming
Interpolation-based techniques have been widely and successfully applied in
the verification of hardware and software, e.g., in bounded-model check- ing,
CEGAR, SMT, etc., whose hardest part is how to synthesize interpolants. Various
work for discovering interpolants for propositional logic, quantifier-free
fragments of first-order theories and their combinations have been proposed.
However, little work focuses on discovering polynomial interpolants in the
literature. In this paper, we provide an approach for constructing non-linear
interpolants based on semidefinite programming, and show how to apply such

Connectivity clues from short-term variability in settlement and geochemical tags of mytilid mussels
The use of geochemical tags in calcified structures of fish and invertebrates is an exciting tool for investigating larval population connectivity. Tag evaluation over relatively short intervals (weeks) may detect environmental and ecological variability at a temporal scale highly relevant to larval transport and settlement. We collected newly settled mussels (Mytilus californianus and M. galloprovincialis) weekly during winter/spring of 2002 along the coast of San Diego, CA, USA, at sites on the exposed coast (SIO) and in a protected coastal bay (HI), to investigate temporal patterns of geochemical tags in mussel shells. Analyses of post-settlement shell via LA-ICP-MS revealed statistically significant temporal variability for all elements we examined (Mg, Mn, Cu, Sr, Cd, Ba, Pb and U). Despite this, our ability to distinguish multielemental signatures between sites was largely conserved. Throughout our 13-week study, SIO and HI mussels could be chemically distinguished from one another in 78-87% of all cases. Settlement varied between 2 and 27 settlers gram-byssus-1week-1 at SIO and HI, and both sites were characterized by 2-3weeks with "high" settlement. Geochemical tags recorded in early larval shell of newly settled mussels differed between "high" and "low" settlement weeks at both sites (MANOVA), driven by Mg and Sr at SIO (p=0.013) and Sr, Cd, Ba and Pb at HI (p<0.001). These data imply that shifts in larval sources or transport corridors were responsible for observed settlement variation, rather than increased larval production. In particular, increased settlement at HI was observed concurrent with the appearance of geochemical tags (e.g., elevated Cd), suggesting that those larvae were retained in upwelled water near the mouth of the bay. Such shifts may reflect short-term changes in connectivity among sites due to altered transport corridors, and influence the demography of local populations
Proximity effect in ultrathin Pb/Ag multilayers within the Cooper limit
We report on transport and tunneling measurements performed on ultra-thin
Pb/Ag (strong coupled superconductor/normal metal) multilayers evaporated by
quench condensation. The critical temperature and energy gap of the
heterostructures oscillate with addition of each layer, demonstrating the
validity of the Cooper limit model in the case of multilayers. We observe
excellent agreement with a simple theory for samples with layer thickness
larger than 30\AA . Samples with single layers thinner than 30\AA deviate from
the Cooper limit theory. We suggest that this is due to the "inverse proximity
effect" where the normal metal electrons improve screening in the
superconducting ultrathin layer and thus enhance the critical temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Search for Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet with further-neighbour ferromagnetic interactions
We investigate an antiferromagnetic triangular Ising model with anisotropic
ferromagnetic interactions between next-nearest neighbours, originally proposed
by Kitatani and Oguchi (J. Phys. Soc. Japan {\bf 57}, 1344 (1988)). The phase
diagram as a function of temperature and the ratio between first- and second-
neighbour interaction strengths is thoroughly examined. We search for a
Kosterlitz-Thouless transition to a state with algebraic decay of correlations,
calculating the correlation lengths on strips of width up to 15 sites by
transfer-matrix methods. Phenomenological renormalization, conformal invariance
arguments, the Roomany-Wyld approximation and a direct analysis of the scaled
mass gaps are used. Our results provide limited evidence that a

Mental health trajectories in university students across the COVID-19 pandemic: findings from the Student Wellbeing at Northern England Universities prospective cohort study
Introduction: Psychological wellbeing in university students is receiving increased focus. However, to date, few longitudinal studies in this population have been conducted. As such, in 2019, we established the Student Wellbeing At Northern England Universities (SWANS) cohort at the University of York, United Kingdom aiming to measure student mental health and wellbeing every six months. Furthermore, the study period included the COVID-19 pandemic, giving an opportunity to track student wellbeing over time, including over the pandemic.
Methods: Eligible participants were invited to participate via email. Data were collected, using Qualtrics, from September 2019 to April 2021, across five waves (W1 to W5). In total, n = 4,622 students participated in at least one wave of the survey. Data collection included sociodemographic, educational, personality measures, and mental health and wellbeing. Latent profile analyses were performed, exploring trajectories of student wellbeing over the study period for those who had completed at least three of the five waves of the survey (n = 765), as measured by the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS).
Results: Five latent profile trajectories of student wellbeing were identified. Of these, the two latent classes with initially higher wellbeing scores had broadly stable wellbeing across time (total n = 505, 66%). Two classes had lower initial scores, which lowered further across time (total n = 227, 30%). Additionally, a fifth class of students was identified who improved substantially over the study period, from a mean WEMWBS of 30.4 at W1, to 49.4 at W5 (n = 33, 4%). Risk factors for having less favourable wellbeing trajectories generally included identifying as LGBT+, self-declaring a disability, or previously being diagnosed with a mental health condition.
Conclusion: Our findings suggest a mixed picture of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on student wellbeing, with a majority showing broadly consistent levels of wellbeing across time, a smaller but still substantial group showing a worsening of wellbeing, and a small group that showed a very marked improvement in wellbeing. Those from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education were most at risk of poorer wellbeing. This raises questions as to whether future support for wellbeing should target specific student subpopulations
Cost and Outcome of Behavioural Activation versus Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Depression (COBRA): a randomised, controlled, non-inferiority trial
Background Depression is a common, debilitating, and costly disorder. Many patients request psychological therapy, but the best-evidenced therapy—cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)—is complex and costly. A simpler therapy—behavioural activation (BA)—might be as effective and cheaper than is CBT. We aimed to establish the clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness of BA compared with CBT for adults with depression. Methods In this randomised, controlled, non-inferiority trial, we recruited adults aged 18 years or older meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV criteria for major depressive disorder from primary care and psychological therapy services in Devon, Durham, and Leeds (UK). We excluded people who were receiving psychological therapy, were alcohol or drug dependent, were acutely suicidal or had attempted suicide in the previous 2 months, or were cognitively impaired, or who had bipolar disorder or psychosis or psychotic symptoms. We randomly assigned participants (1:1) remotely using computer-generated allocation (minimisation used; stratified by depression severity [Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) score of <19 vs ≥19], antidepressant use, and recruitment site) to BA from junior mental health workers or CBT from psychological therapists. Randomisation done at the Peninsula Clinical Trials Unit was concealed from investigators. Treatment was given open label, but outcome assessors were masked. The primary outcome was depression symptoms according to the PHQ-9 at 12 months. We analysed all those who were randomly allocated and had complete data (modified intention to treat [mITT]) and also all those who were randomly allocated, had complete data, and received at least eight treatment sessions (per protocol [PP]). We analysed safety in the mITT population. The non-inferiority margin was 1·9 PHQ-9 points. This trial is registered with the ISCRTN registry, number ISRCTN27473954. Findings Between Sept 26, 2012, and April 3, 2014, we randomly allocated 221 (50%) participants to BA and 219 (50%) to CBT. 175 (79%) participants were assessable for the primary outcome in the mITT population in the BA group compared with 189 (86%) in the CBT group, whereas 135 (61%) were assessable in the PP population in the BA group compared with 151 (69%) in the CBT group. BA was non-inferior to CBT (mITT: CBT 8·4 PHQ-9 points [SD 7·5], BA 8·4 PHQ-9 points [7·0], mean difference 0·1 PHQ-9 points [95% CI −1·3 to 1·5], p=0·89; PP: CBT 7·9 PHQ-9 points [7·3]; BA 7·8 [6·5], mean difference 0·0 PHQ-9 points [–1·5 to 1·6], p=0·99). Two (1%) non-trial-related deaths (one [1%] multidrug toxicity in the BA group and one [1%] cancer in the CBT group) and 15 depression-related, but not treatment-related, serious adverse events (three in the BA group and 12 in the CBT group) occurred in three [2%] participants in the BA group (two [1%] patients who overdosed and one [1%] who self-harmed) and eight (4%) participants in the CBT group (seven [4%] who overdosed and one [1%] who self-harmed). Interpretation We found that BA, a simpler psychological treatment than CBT, can be delivered by junior mental health workers with less intensive and costly training, with no lesser effect than CBT. Effective psychological therapy for depression can be delivered without the need for costly and highly trained professionals. Funding National Institute for Health Research
Two-dimensional clusters of liquid 4-He
The binding energies of two-dimensional clusters (puddles) of He are
calculated in the framework of the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The results
are very well fitted by a mass formula in powers of , where is
the number of particles. The analysis of the mass formula allows for the
extraction of the line tension, which turns out to be 0.121 K/A. Sizes and

Weak Localization Effect in Superconductors by Radiation Damage
Large reductions of the superconducting transition temperature and
the accompanying loss of the thermal electrical resistivity (electron-phonon
interaction) due to radiation damage have been observed for several A15
compounds, Chevrel phase and Ternary superconductors, and in
the high fluence regime. We examine these behaviors based on the recent theory
of weak localization effect in superconductors. We find a good fitting to the
experimental data. In particular, weak localization correction to the
phonon-mediated interaction is derived from the density correlation function.
It is shown that weak localization has a strong influence on both the
phonon-mediated interaction and the electron-phonon interaction, which leads to

Emergence of quasi-metallic state in disordered 2D electron gas due to strong interactions
The interrelation between disorder and interactions in two dimensional
electron liquid is studied beyond weak coupling perturbation theory. Strong
repulsion significantly reduces the electronic density of states on the Fermi
level. This makes the electron liquid more rigid and strongly suppresses
elastic scattering off impurities. As a result the weak localization, although
ultimately present at zero temperature and infinite sample size, is
unobservable at experimentally accessible temperature at high enough densities.
Therefore practically there exists a well defined metallic state. We study
diffusion of electrons in this state and find that the diffusion pole is
significantly modified due to "mixture" with static photons similar to the
Anderson - Higgs mechanism in superconductivity. As a result several effects
stemming from the long range nature of diffusion like the Aronov - Altshuler
logarithmic corrections to conductivity are less pronounced.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.
