Virtue of courage in the western philosophical tradition

What are the major descriptive categories of behaviour which we may readily observe in a ubiquitous manner? In this respect, the answer is rather obvious: efforts are put into either defending what exists to ensure its continuity or opting for change. Both approaches are valid and well known through observations of human behaviour and history. However, there is a lot of confusion owing to the continuous pressure for change abutting the resistance of the \u27traditional\u27. Our contributors provided arguments for each approach where they clearly served a valid purpose. This book extensively covers the many aspects of personal survival and the therapeutic ways by which resilience can by promoted and fostered in individuals with varying degrees of mental, emotional and physical resources

    Analytic Philosophy and Christian Theology

    No full text
In the 20th century, a particularly acrimonious relationship took place between analytic philosophy on the one side and Christian theology on the other. Analytic philosophy has been the dominant mode of philosophical engagement in the English‐speaking world. After a long period of hostility or apathy toward religion, it has surged back to the investigation of religious, theological, ethical, and metaphysical questions. The end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century witnessed the explosion of Christian analytic philosophical theology and its exploration of standard doctrines of the Christian faith. I survey the history and nature of analytic philosophy and explore arguments from Christian theology against analytic philosophy to unearth sources of the division between the two. Several positive appropriations of analytic thought are discussed, including analytic philosophy of religion and philosophical theology, postliberalism, process theology, speech–act theory, and proper functionalism. Finally, I briefly propose a mode of future engagement between the two disciplines and will consider the program of analytic theology

The T&T Clark Companion to the Doctrine of Sin provides a comprehensive treatment of the doctrine of sin. The Companion includes an examination of the biblical and rabbinic accounts of sin, and it provides accounts of sin and its effects offered by key theologians throughout Christian history. It also explores debates surrounding the implications of sin for various doctrines, including God, creation, anthropology, and salvation. The book is comprised of 30 major essays that provide an unparalleled examination of the key texts, figures, and debates relevant to the Christian tradition\u27s discussion of the doctrine of sin. The Companion is unique in that every essay seeks to both appropriate and further stimulate the church\u27s understanding of sin and its implications for the whole of the church\u27s dogmatic tradition. The essays are divided into three sections: (1) Biblical Background; (2) Major Figures and Traditions; and (3) Dogmatic Concerns. The first set of essays explores the biblical and rabbinic accounts of sin to bring out the complexities of the biblical presentation and its implications. The second section discusses the role of the doctrine of sin in the theology of key theologians with a special attention to explaining how the doctrine contributes to an understanding of their overall theology. The final section explores key dogmatic questions and concerns related to the doctrine of sin (e.g. original sin, sin and the question of evil and providence, sin and the freedom of the will). Ch. 2

In this article, we describe spiritual formation training at Rosemead School of Psychology by outlining the various relationships wherein growth occurs. After describing the spiritual context of Rosemead within Biola University, we consider various relationships contributing to spiritual growth among Rosemead students in both formal and informal manners: self and therapist, faculty mentors and supervisors, the Rosemead community of students, and other salient relationships. Narratives of two current students in different stages of the program and two alumni illustrate the unique ways facets of spiritual formation at Rosemead intertwine in individual lives. In the final section, we consider opportunities and challenges for the future

Traumatic experiences are distressingly common. And the risks of developing posttraumatic stress disorder are high. But in recent years the field of traumatology has grown strong, giving survivors and their counselors firmer footing than ever before on which to seek healing. This book is a combined effort to introduce counseling approaches, trauma information, and Christian reflections to respond to the intense suffering people face. With extensive experience treating complex trauma, Heather Gingrich and Fred Gingrich have brought together key essays representing the latest psychological research on trauma from a Christian integration perspective. Students, instructors, clinicians, and researchers alike will find here an overview of the kinds of traumatic experiences coverage of treatment methods, especially those that incorporate spirituality material to critically analyze as well as emotionally engage trauma theoretical bases for trauma treatment and interventions references for further consideration and empirical research Ch.

Work of the Holy Spirit in Natural Psychological Growth

    No full text
I develop the thesis that the Holy Spirit works as the perfecting cause within creation bringing creatures to their divinely ordained telos, and sometimes uses the natural process of growth in therapy toward that end. First, I consider reasons why the work of the Holy Spirit in creation and natural psychological growth processes has sometimes been obscured for us. After clearing the ground, I develop a theology of the work of the Holy Spirit in the natural world and a theological interpretation of significant passages. I identify ten attributes of the work of the Holy Spirit within the natural created realm. In the final section, I use these ten facets to draw out implications for the therapeutic process

Christology was the central doctrine articulated by the early church councils, and it remains the subject of vigorous theological investigation today. The study of the doctrine of Christ is a field of broad ecumenical convergence, inviting theologians from all denominational settings to fruitful collaborative exploration. In the contemporary setting, it is especially crucial for theologians to investigate the scriptural witness afresh, to retrieve classical criteria and categories from the tradition, and to consider the generative pressure of soteriology for Christology proper. The first annual Los Angeles Theology Conference sought to make a positive contribution to contemporary dogmatics in intentional engagement with the Christian tradition. Christology, Ancient and Modern brings together conference proceedings, surveying the field and articulating the sources, norms, and criteria for constructive theological work in Christology. Ch.
