Stringent Constraints on Cosmological Neutrino-Antineutrino Asymmetries from Synchronized Flavor Transformation
We assess a mechanism which can transform neutrino-antineutrino asymmetries
between flavors in the early universe, and confirm that such transformation is
unavoidable in the near bi-maximal framework emerging for the neutrino mixing
matrix. We show that the process is a standard Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein
flavor transformation dictated by a synchronization of momentum states. We also
show that flavor ``equilibration'' is a special feature of maximal mixing, and
carefully examine new constraints placed on neutrino asymmetries. In
particular, the big bang nucleosynthesis limit on electron neutrino degeneracy
xi_e < 0.04 does not apply directly to all flavors, yet confirmation of the
large-mixing-angle solution to the solar neutrino problem will eliminate the
possibility of degenerate big bang nucleosynthesis.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; minor changes to match PRD versio
Oscillation effects on neutrino decoupling in the early universe
In the early universe, neutrinos decouple from equilibrium with the
electromagnetic plasma at a temperature which is only slightly higher than the
temperature where electrons and positrons annihilate. Therefore neutrinos to
some extent share in the entropy transfer from e^+e^- to other species, and
their final temperature is slightly higher than the canonical value T_nu =
(4/11)^{1/3} T_gamma. We study neutrino decoupling in the early universe with
effects of neutrino oscillations included, and find that the change in neutrino
energy density from e^+ e^- annihilations can be about 2-3% higher if
oscillation are included. The primordial helium abundance can be changed by as
much as 1.5 x 10^-4 by neutrino oscillations.Comment: minor changes, matches version to appear in PR
Early carboniferous brachiopod faunas from the Baoshan block, west Yunnan, southwest China
38 brachiopod species in 27 genera and subgenera are described from the Yudong Formation in the Shidian-Baoshan area, west Yunnan, southwest China. New taxa include two new subgenera: Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) and Brachythyrina (Longathyrina), and seven new species: Eomarginifera yunnanensis, Marginatia cylindrica, Unispirifer (Unispirifer) xiangshanensis, Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) wafangjieensis, Brachythyrina (Brachythyrina) transversa, Brachythyrina (Longathyrina) baoshanensis, and Girtyella wafangjieensis. Based on the described material and constraints from associated coral and conodont faunas, the age of the brachiopod fauna from the Yudon Formation is considered late Tournaisian (Early Carboniferous), with a possibility extending into earlyViseacutean.<br /
Classical Simulation of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics in Periodic Optical Structures
Spatial and/or temporal propagation of light waves in periodic optical
structures offers a rather unique possibility to realize in a purely classical
setting the optical analogues of a wide variety of quantum phenomena rooted in
relativistic wave equations. In this work a brief overview of a few optical
analogues of relativistic quantum phenomena, based on either spatial light
transport in engineered photonic lattices or on temporal pulse propagation in
Bragg grating structures, is presented. Examples include spatial and temporal
photonic analogues of the Zitterbewegung of a relativistic electron, Klein
tunneling, vacuum decay and pair-production, the Dirac oscillator, the
relativistic Kronig-Penney model, and optical realizations of non-Hermitian
extensions of relativistic wave equations.Comment: review article (invited), 14 pages, 7 figures, 105 reference
