Black Holes with a Massive Dilaton
The modifications of dilaton black holes which result when the dilaton
acquires a mass are investigated. We derive some general constraints on the
number of horizons of the black hole and argue that if the product of the black
hole charge and the dilaton mass satisfies then the black
hole has only one horizon. We also argue that for there may exist
solutions with three horizons and we discuss the causal structure of such
solutions. We also investigate the possible structures of extremal solutions
and the related problem of two-dimensional dilaton gravity with a massive

Hip fracture, mortality risk, and cause of death over two decades
Summary: Men and women with hip fracture have higher short-term mortality. This study investigated mortality risk over two decades post-fracture; excess mortality remained high in women up to 10 years and in men up to 20 years. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and pneumonia were leading causes of death with a long-term doubling of risk. Introduction: Hip fractures are associated with increased mortality, particularly short term. In this study with a two-decade follow-up, we examined mortality and cause of death compared to the background population. Methods: We followed 1013 hip fracture patients and 2026 matched community controls for 22 years. Mortality, excess mortality, and cause of death were analyzed and stratified for age and sex. Hazard ratio (HR) was estimated by Cox regression. A competing risk model was fitted to estimate HR for common causes of death (CVD, cancer, pneumonia) in the short and long term (>1 year). Results: For both sexes and at all ages, mortality was higher in hip fracture patients across the observation period with men losing most life years (p <0.001). Mortality risk was higher for up to 15 years (women (risk ratio (RR) 1.9 [95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.7–2.1]); men (RR 2.8 [2.2–3.5])) and until end of follow-up ((RR 1.8 [1.6–2.0]); (RR 2.7 [2.1–3.3])). Entropy of Extremal Black Holes in Two Dimensions
Entropy for two dimensional extremal black holes is computed explicitly in a
finite-space formulation of the black hole thermodynamics and is shown to be
zero {\it locally}. Our results are in conformity with the recent one by

Stringy black holes and energy conditions
The energy condition inequalities for the matter stress energy comprised out
of the dilaton and Maxwell fields in the dilaton-Maxwell gravity theories
emerging out of string theory are examined in detail. In the simplistic 1+1
dimensional models, (where is the Ricci scalar), turns out to be
the requirement for ensuring focusing of timelike geodesics. In 3+1 dimensions,
we outline the requirements on matter for pure dilaton theories-these in turn
constrain the functional forms of the dilaton. Furthermore, in charged dilaton
gravity a curious opposite behaviour of the matter stress energy w.r.t the
violation/conservation of the Weak Energy Condition is noted for the electric
and magnetic black hole metrics written in the string frame of reference. We
also investigate the matter that is necessary for creating certain specific
non-asymptotically flat black holes. For the electric and magnetic black hole
metrics, strangely, matter satisfies the weak energy condition in the string
frame. Finally, the Averaged Null Energy Condition is evaluated along radial

Exact soluble two-dimensional charged wormhole
We present an exactly soluble charged wormhole model in two dimensions by
adding infalling chiral fermions on the static wormhole. The infalling energy
due to the infalling charged matter requires the classical back reaction of the
geometry, which is solved by taking into account of the nontrivial nonchiral
exotic energy. Finally, we obtain the exact expression for the size of the
throat depending on the total amount of the infalling net energy and discuss
the interesting transition from the AdS spacetime to the wormhole geometry.Comment: 8 pages, no figure
Chromosomal mapping, gene structure and characterization of the human and murine RAB27B gene
BACKGROUND: Rab GTPases are regulators of intracellular membrane traffic. The Rab27 subfamily consists of Rab27a and Rab27b. Rab27a has been recently implicated in Griscelli Disease, a disease combining partial albinism with severe immunodeficiency. Rab27a plays a key role in the function of lysosomal-like organelles such as melanosomes in melanocytes and lytic granules in cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Little is known about Rab27b. RESULTS: The human RAB27B gene is organised in six exons, spanning about 69 kb in the chromosome 18q21.1 region. Exon 1 is non-coding and is separated from the others by 49 kb of DNA and exon 6 contains a long 3' untranslated sequence (6.4 kb). The mouse Rab27b cDNA shows 95% identity with the human cDNA at the protein level and maps to mouse chromosome 18. The mouse mRNA was detected in stomach, large intestine, spleen and eye by RT-PCR, and in heart, brain, spleen and kidney by Northern blot. Transient over-expression of EGF-Rab27b fusion protein in cultured melanocytes revealed that Rab27b is associated with melanosomes, as observed for EGF-Rab27a. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the Rab27 subfamily of Ras-like GTPases is highly conserved in mammals. There is high degree of conservation in sequence and gene structure between RAB27A and RAB27B genes. Exogenous expression of Rab27b in melanocytes results in melanosomal association as observed for Rab27a, suggesting the two Rab27 proteins are functional homologues. As with RAB27A in Griscelli Disease, RAB27B may be also associated with human disease mapping to chromosome 18
Nitrogen and Copper doped solar light active TiO2 photocatalyst for water decontamination
A novel class of photocatalytic coating capable of degrading bacterial and chemical contaminants in the presence of visible sunlight wavelengths was produced by depositing a stable photocatalytic TiO2 film on the internal lumen of glass bottles via a sol gel method. This coating was prepared in either undoped form or doped with nitrogen and/or copper to produce visible light-active TiO2 films which were annealed at 600 °C and were characterized by Raman, UV-Vis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The presence of doped and undoped TiO2 films was found to accelerate the degradation of methylene blue in the presence of natural sunlight, while copper-doped TiO2 films were found to accelerate bacterial inactivation (of E. coli and E. faecalis) in the presence of natural sunlight
Comparison of p53 and DNA content abnormalities in adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and gastric cardia.
This study examined the association between 17p allelic loss, p53 gene mutation, p53 protein expression and DNA aneuploidy in a series of adenocarcinomas arising in the oesophagus and gastric cardia. 17p allelic loss was detected in 79% (15 of 19) of oesophageal and in 83% (29 of 35) of gastric adenocarcinomas. p53 mutations were detected in 70% (14 of 20) and 63% (26 of 41) of oesophageal and of gastric adenocarcinomas respectively. Both tumour types were associated with a predominance of base transitions at CpG dinucleotides. In five cases of oesophageal adenocarcinoma, the same mutation was detected both in tumour and in adjacent dysplastic Barrett's epithelium. Diffuse p53 protein expression was detected in 65% (13 of 20) and 59% (24 of 41) of oesophageal and of gastric tumours, respectively, and was associated with the presence of p53 missense mutation (Chi-squared, P < 0.0001). DNA aneuploidy was detected in 80% (16 of 20) of oesophageal and in 70% (28 of 40) of gastric tumours. No association was found between p53 or DNA content abnormalities and tumour stage or histological subtype. In conclusion, this study detected a similar pattern of p53 alterations in adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and gastric cardia--molecular data consistent with the observation that these tumours demonstrate similar clinical and epidemiological features
