A review of the impacts of invasive wild pigs on native vertebrates
The wild pig (Sus scrofa) is a successful invasive species that has become well established outside of its native range in Eurasia. The invasive wild pig is the result of released or escaped domesticated livestock becoming feral, or Eurasian boar introduced for hunting purposes. The global spread of wild pigs has recently been exacerbated in some areas, such as the USA, by anthropogenically assisted dispersal. Once established in novel ecosystems, wild pigs have the potential to have significant negative impacts on the ecosystem, and the scientific literature is replete with examples. It is generally accepted that wild pigs negatively impact native fauna where they have become established, yet the degree to which they impact faunal communities has not been well described. This paper serves as a review of the information to date on the implications of wild pig invasions and impacts they have on terrestrial vertebrates in their invasive range. In addition, the review highlights our need for more research in this area, particularly regarding declining species
Mutation analysis of HIF prolyl hydroxylases (PHD/EGLN) in individuals with features of phaeochromocytoma and renal cell carcinoma susceptibility
Germline mutations in the von HippelâLindau disease (VHL) and succinate dehydrogenase subunit B (SDHB) genes can cause inherited phaeochromocytoma and/or renal cell carcinoma(RCC). Dysregulation of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) transcription factors has been linked to VHL and SDHB-related RCC; both HIF dysregulation and disordered function of a prolyl hydroxylase domain isoform 3 (PHD3/EGLN3)-related pathway of neuronal apoptosis have been linked to the development of phaeochromocytoma. The 2-oxoglutarate-dependent prolyl hydroxylase enzymes PHD1 (EGLN2), PHD2 (EGLN1) and PHD3 (EGLN3) have a key role in regulating the stability of HIF-a subunits (and hence expression of the HIF-a transcription factors). A germline PHD2 mutation has been reported in association with congenital erythrocytosis and recurrent extra-adrenal phaeochromocytoma. We undertook mutation analysis of PHD1, PHD2 and PHD3 in two cohorts of patients with features of inherited phaeochromocytoma (nZ82) and inherited RCC (nZ64) and no evidence of germline mutations in known susceptibility genes. No confirmed pathogenic mutations were detected suggesting that mutations in these genes are not a frequent cause of inherited phaeochromocytoma or RCC
Teleology and Realism in Leibniz's Philosophy of Science
This paper argues for an interpretation of Leibnizâs claim that physics requires both mechanical and teleological principles as a view regarding the interpretation of physical theories. Granting that Leibnizâs fundamental ontology remains non-physical, or mentalistic, it argues that teleological principles nevertheless ground a realist commitment about mechanical descriptions of phenomena. The empirical results of the new sciences, according to Leibniz, have genuine truth conditions: there is a fact of the matter about the regularities observed in experience. Taking this stance, however, requires bringing non-empirical reasons to bear upon mechanical causal claims. This paper first evaluates extant interpretations of Leibnizâs thesis that there are two realms in physics as describing parallel, self-sufficient sets of laws. It then examines Leibnizâs use of teleological principles to interpret scientific results in the context of his interventions in debates in seventeenth-century kinematic theory, and in the teaching of Copernicanism. Leibnizâs use of the principle of continuity and the principle of simplicity, for instance, reveal an underlying commitment to the truth-aptness, or approximate truth-aptness, of the new natural sciences. Random template placement and prior information
In signal detection problems, one is usually faced with the task of searching
a parameter space for peaks in the likelihood function which indicate the
presence of a signal. Random searches have proven to be very efficient as well
as easy to implement, compared e.g. to searches along regular grids in
parameter space. Knowledge of the parameterised shape of the signal searched
for adds structure to the parameter space, i.e., there are usually regions
requiring to be densely searched while in other regions a coarser search is
sufficient. On the other hand, prior information identifies the regions in
which a search will actually be promising or may likely be in vain. Defining
specific figures of merit allows one to combine both template metric and prior
distribution and devise optimal sampling schemes over the parameter space. We
show an example related to the gravitational wave signal from a binary inspiral
event. Here the template metric and prior information are particularly
contradictory, since signals from low-mass systems tolerate the least mismatch
in parameter space while high-mass systems are far more likely, as they imply a
greater signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and hence are detectable to greater
distances. The derived sampling strategy is implemented in a Markov chain Monte

Leibniz, Acosmism, and Incompossibility
Leibniz claims that God acts in the best possible way, and that this includes creating exactly one world. But worlds are aggregates, and aggregates have a low degree of reality or metaphysical perfection, perhaps none at all. This is Leibnizâs tendency toward acosmism, or the view that there this no such thing as creation-as-a-whole. Many interpreters reconcile Leibnizâs acosmist tendency with the high value of worlds by proposing that God sums the value of each substance created, so that the best world is just the world with the most substances. I call this way of determining the value of a world the Additive Theory of Value (ATV), and argue that it leads to the current and insoluble form of the problem of incompossibility. To avoid the problem, I read âpossible worldsâ in âGod chooses the best of all possible worldsâ as referring to Godâs ideas of worlds. These ideas, though built up from essences, are themselves unities and so well suited to be the value bearers that Leibnizâs theodicy requires. They have their own value, thanks to their unity, and that unity is not preserved when more essences are added
Parabens Promote Protumorigenic Effects in Luminal Breast Cancer Cell Lines With Diverse Genetic Ancestry
Context
One in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Yet, the burden of disease is greater in Black women. Black women have a 40% higher mortality rate than White women, and a higher incidence of breast cancer at age 40 and younger. While the underlying cause of this disparity is multifactorial, exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in hair and other personal care products has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Parabens are known EDCs that are commonly used as preservatives in hair and other personal care products, and Black women are disproportionately exposed to products containing parabens.
Objective
Studies have shown that parabens impact breast cancer cell proliferation, death, migration/invasion, and metabolism, as well as gene expression in vitro. However, these studies were conducted using cell lines of European ancestry; to date, no studies have utilized breast cancer cell lines of West African ancestry to examine the effects of parabens on breast cancer progression. Like breast cancer cell lines with European ancestry, we hypothesize that parabens promote protumorigenic effects in breast cancer cell lines of West African ancestry.
Methods
Luminal breast cancer cell lines with West African ancestry (HCC1500) and European ancestry (MCF-7) were treated with biologically relevant doses of methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben.
Results
Following treatment, estrogen receptor target gene expression and cell viability were examined. We observed altered estrogen receptor target gene expression and cell viability that was paraben and cell line specific.
Conclusion
This study provides greater insight into the tumorigenic role of parabens in the progression of breast cancer in Black women
Specific heat of Ce_{0.8}La_{0.2}Al_{3} in magnetic fields: a test of the anisotropic Kondo picture
The specific heat C of Ce_{0.8}La_{0.2}Al_{3} has been measured as a function
of temperature T in magnetic fields up to 14 T. A large peak in C at 2.3 K has
recently been ascribed to an anisotropic Kondo effect in this compound. A 14-T
field depresses the temperature of the peak by only 0.2 K, but strongly reduces
its height. The corresponding peak in C/T shifts from 2.1 K at zero field to
1.7 K at 14 T. The extrapolated specific heat coefficient C/T(T->0) increases
with field over the range studied. We show that these trends are inconsistent
