Photochemistry and internal eliminations of organosulfur and organoselenium compounds

This dissertation focuses on two specific aspects of the chemistry of organosulfur and organoselnium compounds. The first is the internal elimination of the sulfinate esters, sulfonic esters, and the effects of silyl-substitution on the internal elimination of sulfoxides.;The internal elimination of sulfinate esters proceeds through a 5-membered transition state whereas sulfonate esters proceed through a 6-membered transition state. Using computations, it was determined in the 6-membered transition state that substantial charge separation occurs, but less charge separation is observed in the 5-membered transition state. The ability of the sulfonate leaving group to incorporate charge favors the 6-member transition state. In the 5-centered elimination, a nucleophilic-electrophilic mismatch in the transition state is made worse when the sulfur atom is more positively charged, as in the sulfonate.;Silyl groups attached at either the Calpha or Cbeta position of an alkyl sulfoxide lower the activation enthalpy of the sulfoxide syn elimination reaction by a few kcal mol-1. A Silyl substituent at Cbeta can stabilize the transition state by either stabilizing the developing positive charge at Calpha or negative charge at Cbeta. Silyl substitution at Calpha is not positioned to interact favorably with either developing charge in the transition state, and the lower activation barrier is more likely a response to the overall less endothermic reaction than any silyl interaction in the transition state.;The second topic is the photochemistry of organosulfur and organoselenium ylides. The photodeoxygenation of dibenzoselenophene oxide (DBSeO) was found to have a greater quantum efficiency in producing O(3P) than dibenzothiophene oxide (DBTO). However, the photo sensitization and direct irradiation of DBTO (or DBSeO) were found to undergo photodeoxygenation by, in most cases, different mechanisms. Both of these conclusions were supported by monitoring the relative oxidized product ratios. Using calculations, the bond strengths of a variety of sulfur and selenium ylides were determined. This information is used in the elucidation of the photodeoxygenation mechanism of diaryl sulfoxides and selenoxides

Dating Deformation in the Palmer Zone of Transpression, Central Massachusetts: Temporal Constraints on Models for Progressive Deformation in the Middle Crust

The Palmer Zone of Transpression (PZoT) in the Bronson Hill zone of central Massachusetts is an expression of late Paleozoic oblique convergence between Avalonia and Laurentia. The steeply W-dipping, N-S trending PZoT is defined by bounding high strain zones (Mt. Dumplin on west, Central Maine and Conant Brook on east) of opposing shear sense enclosing the Monson orthogneiss. Research was designed to establish the timing of deformation to test the hypothesis that strain in transpressional systems occurs contemporaneously. An understanding of the timing of deformation in this zone could elucidate the mechanisms that formed the zone and contribute to a greater overall understanding of fabric evolution in transpressional systems. U-Pb SIMS ages of zircon in deformed pegmatites in Monson orthogneiss and Paxton and Rangeley paragneisses are 369 to 364 Ma. Plutons that contain all fabrics associated with progressive transpression – lineations ranging from subhorizontal (initial) to steeply-plunging parallel to dip (final) – mark the maximum age of deformation. Ages range from 360-355 Ma in the Hardwick tonalite, Wachusett tonalite, West Warren diorite, Walker Mountain orthogneiss, and Nichewaug diorite, and indicate transpression in the PZoT initiated after ca. 355 Ma. Monazite from Rangeley paragneisses and schists selected in the context of petrofabrics and syn-deformational mineral assemblages yield U-Th-Pb EPMA chemical ages that indicate dextral transpression occurred continuously from 355 to 315 Ma. Monazite chemical ages also indicate that sinistral lateral displacement in the west-bounding Mt. Dumplin high strain zone initiated ca. 325 Ma and lasted for roughly 45 m.y., ending around 280 Ma. The data for the Central Maine zone, Conant Brook shear zone, and Greenwich syncline support the idea of contemporaneous deformation across the compartmentalized zones of a transpressive system (355-315 Ma), while the ages for the Mt. Dumplin high strain zone indicate sinistral lateral displacement overlapped dextral transpression by about 10 m.y. but generally continued later in time (325-280 Ma)

Atomic oxygen O(3P) is a potent oxidant that has been well-studied in the gas phase. However, exploration of its reactivity in the condensed organic phase has been hampered by the lack of an appropriate source. Dibenzothiophene-S-oxide (DBTO) and related derivatives have been promoted as photochemical O(3P) sources but suffer from low quantum yields. Photolysis of dibenzoselenophene-Se-oxide (DBSeO) results in the formation of dibenzoselenophene and oxidized solvent in significantly higher quantum yields, ca. 0.1. The oxidation product ratios from toluene obtained from the photolysis of dibenzothiophene-S-oxide and the corresponding selenoxide are the same, strongly suggesting a common oxidizing intermediate, which is taken to be O(3P). An additional product, proposed to be the corresponding selenenic ester, is also observed under deoxygenated conditions. The photochemistry of diphenyl selenoxide includes a minor portion of oxidant-forming deoxygenation, in contrast to previous conclusions (Yamazaki, Y.; Tsuchiya, T.; Hasegawa, T.Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn. 2003, 201−202)

Analysis of American Nursing Literature in Context of Socio-historical events, Women’s Societal Advancement, and related Legislation from the 1960s to the 2010s

This paper explored nursing literature from the 1960s to the 2010 to discuss the socio-historical context of women within society, and how nursing fit into that socio-historical context. The purpose of this paper was to examine historical events, legislation, and related nursing literature from six decades to show that the nursing profession and women’s health advances with the progression of gender equality. Though the nursing profession and its involvement with women’s health has advanced with women’s equality, literature reports the same problems follow the timeline of the nursing profession. Recurring themes include educational standards, scope of practice incongruences, and issues of nurse autonomy. Current nursing literature reflects past issues and continues to try to resolve them in a modern socio-historical context. Keywords: women, nursing, policy, women’s healthBachelor of Scienc

A Preliminary Evaluation of a Digital Token Economy to Increase Student Engagement during Group Teletherapy

    Get PDF
Shortly following the temporary nationwide school dismissal amid COVID-19, the current exploratory case-study evaluated the feasibility of two engagement strategies delivered during group teletherapy: Class Dojo and opportunities to respond (OTR). Three elementary students with emotional and behavioral difficulties participated. An A-B-A design was used to evaluate the effects of Class Dojo on student engagement with therapist-delivered OTRs. Due to one student’s poor response to the contingency, an A-B-C design was used to evaluate the additive effect of student-delivered OTRs on his engagement. Results indicated moderate to high rates of student attendance, and consistently high rates of engagement for two students. When students delivered OTRs, the student who initially struggled to engage demonstrated an increase in engagement. Practical issues are discussed and recommendations are considered for future research on increasing student engagement during online settings

The bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of sulfur and selenium ylides have been estimated by applying MP2/6-311++G(3df,2p)//MP2/6-31G(d,p), G3, and other computational methods. Computed sulfoxide bond enthalpies were compared to experimental results to ensure the reliability of the computational methods before extending to related compounds. The examined ylides include the following:  sulfoxides, sulfilimines, S,C-sulfonium ylides, and selenoxides. Selenoxides have BDEs about 10 kcal/mol smaller than the corresponding sulfoxides. N-H sulfilimines and CH2-S,C-sulfonium ylides have low BDEs, unless the sulfilimine or S,C-sulfonium ylide is stabilized by an electronegative substituent on N or C, respectively. Incorporation of the S or Se into a thiophene or selenophene-type ring lowers the BDE for the ylide
