Alpha diagnostics using pellet charge exchange: Results on TFTR and prospects for ITER
Confinement of alpha particles is essential for fusion ignition and alpha physics studies are a major goal of the TFTR, JET, and ITER DT experiments, but alpha measurements remain one of the most challenging plasma diagnostic tasks. The Pellet Charge Exchange (PCX) diagnostic has successfully measured the radial density profile and energy distribution of fast (0.5 to 3.5 MeV) confined alpha particles in TFTR. This paper describes the diagnostic capabilities of PCX demonstrated on TFTR and discusses the prospects for applying this technique to ITER. Major issues on ITER include the pellet`s perturbation to the plasma and obtaining satisfactory pellet penetration into the plasma
Measurements of Fast Confined Alphas on TFTR
This Letter reports the first measurements of the fast confined α-particle energy distribution in a fusion plasma. The pellet charge exchange technique shows the fusion generated α\u27s in the core of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor plasma slow down classically, and appear to be well confined. Preliminary indications are that stochastic ripple effects are responsible for steepening the energy distribution outside the plasma core (r/a0.35). Sawteeth mixing of fast α\u27s is suggested in data during the post-beam-heating plasma decay. © 1995 The American Physical Society
Electron-Phonon Coupling in Highly-Screened Graphene
Photoemission studies of graphene have resulted in a long-standing
controversy concerning the strength of the experimental electron-phonon
interaction in comparison with theoretical calculations. Using high-resolution
angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we study graphene grown on a copper
substrate, where the metallic screening of the substrate substantially reduces
the electron-electron interaction, simplifying the comparison of the
electron-phonon interaction between theory and experiment. By taking the
nonlinear bare bandstructure into account, we are able to show that the
strength of the electron-phonon interaction does indeed agree with theoretical
calculations. In addition, we observe a significant bandgap at the Dirac point
of graphene.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. on July 20, 201
Coexistence of the spin-density-wave and superconductivity in the (Ba,K)Fe2As2
The relation between the spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting order is
a central topic in current research on the FeAs-based high Tc superconductors.
Conflicting results exist in the LaFeAs(O,F)-class of materials, for which
whether the SDW and superconductivity are mutually exclusive or they can
coexist has not been settled. Here we show that for the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 system,
the SDW and superconductivity can coexist in an extended range of compositions.
The availability of single crystalline samples and high value of the energy
gaps would make the materials a model system to investigate the high Tc
ferropnictide superconductivity.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Using the Wigner-Ibach Surmise to Analyze Terrace-Width Distributions: History, User's Guide, and Advances
A history is given of the applications of the simple expression generalized
from the surmise by Wigner and also by Ibach to extract the strength of the
interaction between steps on a vicinal surface, via the terrace width
distribution (TWD). A concise guide for use with experiments and a summary of
some recent extensions are provided.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, reformatted (with revtex) version of refereed

Differential kinetic profiles and metabolism of primaquine enantiomers by human hepatocytes
BACKGROUND: The clinical utility of primaquine (PQ), used as a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, is limited due to metabolism-linked hemolytic toxicity in individuals with genetic deficiency in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. The current study investigated differential metabolism of PQ enantiomers in light of the suggestions that toxicity and efficacy might be largely enantioselective. METHODS: Stable isotope (13)C-labelled primaquine and its two enantiomers (+)-PQ, (−)-PQ were separately incubated with cryopreserved human hepatocytes. Time-tracked substrate depletion and metabolite production were monitored via UHPLC–MS/MS. RESULTS: The initial half-life of 217 and 65 min; elimination rate constants (λ) of 0.19 and 0.64 h(−1); intrinsic clearance (Cl(int)) of 2.55 and 8.49 (µL/min)/million cells, which when up-scaled yielded Cl(int) of 6.49 and 21.6 (mL/min)/kg body mass was obtained respectively for (+)- and (−)-PQ. The extrapolation of in vitro intrinsic clearance to in vivo human hepatic blood clearance, performed using the well-stirred liver model, showed that the rate of hepatic clearance of (+)-PQ was only 45 % that of (−)-PQ. Two major primary routes of metabolism were observed—oxidative deamination of the terminal amine and hydroxylations on the quinoline moiety of PQ. The major deaminated metabolite, carboxyprimaquine (CPQ) was preferentially generated from the (−)-PQ. Other deaminated metabolites including PQ terminal alcohol (m/z 261), a cyclized side chain derivative from the aldehyde (m/z 241), cyclized carboxylic acid derivative (m/z 257), a quinone-imine product of hydroxylated CPQ (m/z 289), CPQ glucuronide (m/z 451) and the glucuronide of PQ alcohol (m/z 437) were all preferentially generated from the (−)-PQ. The major quinoline oxidation product (m/z 274) was preferentially generated from (+)-PQ. In addition to the products of the two metabolic pathways, two other major metabolites were observed: a prominent glycosylated conjugate of PQ on the terminal amine (m/z 422), peaking by 30 min and preferentially generated by (+)-PQ; and the carbamoyl glucuronide of PQ (m/z 480) exclusively generated from (+)-PQ. CONCLUSION: Metabolism of PQ showed enantioselectivity. These findings may provide important information in establishing clinical differences in PQ enantiomers
Symmetry Breaking in Few Layer Graphene Films
Recently, it was demonstrated that the quasiparticle dynamics, the
layer-dependent charge and potential, and the c-axis screening coefficient
could be extracted from measurements of the spectral function of few layer
graphene films grown epitaxially on SiC using angle-resolved photoemission
spectroscopy (ARPES). In this article we review these findings, and present
detailed methodology for extracting such parameters from ARPES. We also present
detailed arguments against the possibility of an energy gap at the Dirac
crossing ED.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, Conference Proceedings of DPG Meeting Mar 2007
