    Metagenomics reveals seasonality of human pathogenic bacteria from hand-dug well water in the Cuvelai Etosha Basin of Namibia

    Namibia is a large country with a population slightly above 2 million of which 73% live in rural areas. It is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa with unpredictable rainfall patterns which occur between October and May. The Cuvelai Etosha Basin is a rural setting in which most people depend on groundwater to circumvent water scarcity by the construction of hand-dug wells. Communities consume hand-dug well water throughout the year without; knowledge of its safety, and treatment prior to use. Hence, this study aimed at evaluating the seasonal safety and quality of hand-dug well water for human consumption. A 16S rRNA metagenomics study was conducted to explore the influence of season on the human pathogenic bacterial species richness, diversity, evenness and abundance in the hand-dug wells. Bacterial pathogens were identified and analysis revealed no significant difference in species richness and diversity, and a significant difference in species evenness and abundance between the wet and dry seasons. Hence, seasonality had an influence on human bacterial pathogens evenness and abundance but had no influence on species richness and diversity. In addition, the water in hand-dug wells of the Cuvelai Etosha Basin is not safe for consumption and domestic use unless sanitized. It is recommended that efforts should be made to treat the water prior to use, and hand-dug wells should be properly constructed to reduce contamination

    Genetic Diversity of Namibian Pennisetum glaucum

    Current Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. BR. cultivars in Namibia have overall poor performance posing a threat to the nation’s food security because this crop is staple for over 70% of the Namibian population. The crop suffers from undesirable production traits such as susceptibility to diseases, low yield, and prolonged reproductive cycle. This study aimed to understand the genetic diversity of the crop in Namibia by simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and morphology analysis. A total of 1441 genotypes were collected from the National Gene Bank representing all the Namibian landraces. A sample of 96 genotypes was further analyzed by SSR using Shannon-Wiener diversity index and revealed a value of 0.45 indicating low genetic diversity. Ordination using Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA) on SSR data confirmed clusters generated by UPGMA for the 96 P. glaucum accessions. UPGMA phenograms of 29 morphological characterized genotypes were generated for SSR and morphology data and the two trees revealed 78% resemblance. Lodging susceptibility, tillering attitude, spike density, fodder yield potential, early vigour, and spike shape were the phenotypic characters upon which some clusters were based in both datasets. It is recommended that efforts should be made to widen the current gene pool in Namibia

    Prevalence of Persons with Disability Enrolled in Undergraduate Medical Schools in Brazil, 2019

    Introduction: The affirmative policies in Brazil guarantee the provision of undergraduate medical education to People with Disability (PWD). The objective was to estimate the prevalence of PWD undergraduate medical students in Brazil in 2019.Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive study that used census data from the total population of the undergraduatemedical students (N=183,646) who were enrolled at the Brazilian medical schools, in 2019. The data are secondary, unidentified and accessed online, and were originally collected by the Higher Education Census conducted by Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Educational Studies and Research (INEP), which used a questionnaire designed to capture information from students and medical courses. The descriptive analysis was based on absolute and relative frequencies.Results: The prevalence of medical students that were PWD was 0.80% (1,460/183,646), and this includes both Brazilian and foreign students. The latter includes people from 76 different countries. Foreign students who are PWD came from eight different countries: Bolivia, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Republic of Congo, Paraguay, Philippines, Singapore and Spain. Most of the PWD were male (51.37%), aged 20 to 24 years (46.78%) and of non-white ethnicity (52.26%). Most students were enrolled in public medical schools (73.97%). A fraction of PWD students (6.51%) was enrolled in medical schools with no specific resource or assistance for PWD. The highest prevalence was the physical disability (39.11%), followed by low vision accuracy (24.45%), intellectual (15.41%), low hearing (14.11%), blindness (3.97%), multiple disabilities (2.47%) and deafness (1.51%).Conclusions: The prevalence of PWD medical students in Brazil is low, and is dominated by students with physical and sensory disabilities but lacks the deaf-blind. Despite the existence of legal regulations favoring PWD to study medicine, some medical schools have not done adequate adjustments to accommodate them. This suggests that affirmative policies for the inclusion of PWD in higher education, particularly in medicine, still need improvement

    COVID-19 Pandemic and Hospitalizations due to Abortion among 10- to 14-Year-Old Girls in Brazil

    Introduction: Various non-pharmacological interventions to prevent coronavirus dissemination were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, including school closures. The effect of these interventions on particular aspects of people’s lives such as sexual and reproductive health outcomes has not been adequately discussed. The objective of the study was to compare the monthly hospital admission rates due to abortion before and during school closure. Methods: We used an interrupted time series (IES) design to estimate the hospital admission rates before and during the school closure (intervention in March 2020) period. The analysis was performed considering all girls from age groups of interest and by stratifying the age groups according to skin color (white and non-white) in which the non-white category comprised both the black and mixed ethnicity together. Coefficients and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using segmented linear regression models. Results: The results showed positive and statistically significant coefficients, suggesting post-intervention trend changes both in the population as a whole (coefficient: 0.07; 95% CI: 0.02; 0.11) and the non-white population group (coefficient: 0.07; 95% CI: 0.03; 0.11), indicating that the monthly hospital admission rates increased over the post-intervention period compared to baseline pre-intervention period. The ITS analysis did not detect statistically significant trend changes (coefficient: 0.02; 95% CI: −0.01; 0.05) in abortion admission rates in the white girl population group. Conclusion: The hospitalizations in Brazil due to abortions in 10- to 14-year-old girls increased during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 compared to 2019, and the number of abortions was higher in the non-white population than the white population. Furthermore, recognizing that the implementation of school closure has affected the minority population differentially can help develop more effective actions to face other future similar situations

    Severe form of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis: a case report

    Sporotrichosis is the most frequent subcutaneous mycosis in Latin America. It is caused by species of the genus Sporothrix. Infection in humans occurs through the entry of the fungus into the skin. Zoonotic outbreaks involving cats in the transmission of the disease have been frequently reported. The lymphocutaneous form is the most commonly observed and the upper limbs are the most affected sites. We report a case of a 64-year-old healthy female patient with a lymphocutaneous form with rapid progression of lesions, which was refractory to initial treatment with itraconazole. Treatment with liposomal amphotericin B was performed with a satisfactory resolution, but aesthetic and functional sequelae in the left upper limb were installed

    Seasonal Health Risks Due to Zoonotic Pathogens from Hand-dug Well Water in Ohangwena and Omusati Regions of Namibia

    Water is a global need for the health and survival of all life forms and a habitat to some. However, approximately one billion people in developing countries do not have access to safe drinking water in which Namibia is not an exception. Rural communities of Ohangwena and Omusati regions of Namibia construct hand-dug wells as a source of water. However, these hand-dug wells are not monitored for water quality and are generally poorly constructed. In addition, these hand-dug wells are easily accessed by both humans and animals making them a potential reservoir for zoonotic bacteria partly known to aid antimicrobial resistance development, a global health concern. A metagenomics analysis targeting the 16S rRNA gene was used to detect the bacterial communities in a total of 40 hand-dug well water samples, with 20 being from the wet season and the rest from the dry season. A total of 57 bacterial pathogens were detected with a diverse of zoonotic assemblage. Analysis revealed significant differences in diversity and evenness, and no significant difference in richness of zoonotic bacterial pathogens in hand-dug wells between the wet and dry seasons (P < 0.05) with the dry season having a higher diversity and evenness compared to the wet season. The analysis showed that the hand-dug well water was not definitely safe for human and livestock consumption and their exposure to zoonotic pathogens was pronounced in the dry season
