Chemical Castration as an Evolving Concept: Is It a Possible Solution for Sexual Offences?
As growing criminal offences, sexual offences defined by any sexual behavior lacking clear consent, creates significant morbidity, psychiatric comorbidities, adjustment disorders and mortality worldwide. Criminal laws vary between countries while use of chemical castration methods such as hormonal therapies or surgical castration techniques has been implemented in multiple states and countries while number of countries implemented castration methods have increased rapidly in recent years. Despite such trend no comprehensive randomized controlled trial or meta-analysis study has been performed yet. Additionally, multiple ethical questions arise regarding such castration techniques in sexual offenders. In this study our aim is to demonstrate efficiency and possible adverse effects of hormonal and surgical castration techniques, variations among countries and states, and ethical issues
Dikkat eksikliği hiperaktivite bozukluğu ve omega-3 yağ asidi takviyesi: Sistematik bir derleme
Objectives: The current study aims to explore (1) the relationship among alexithymia, emotional regulation, and various psychological symptoms factors; (2) the mediating role of emotion regulation strategies in the relationship among alexithymia and psychological symptoms; and (3) whether individuals with alexithymia high and low scores differ in psychological symptoms and emotional regulation. Method: In this study that consists of 319 university students reached through convenience sampling method, a cross sectional non-experimental design is used. A demographic information form, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and Emotion Regulation Scale (ER) were used for data collection. Results: TAS-20 Scores were moderately positively correlated with all factors of BSI and the BSI-General Severity Index (GSI) and the ER-suppression subscale while negatively correlated with the ER- cognitive reappraisal factor. Further analysis showed that ER-suppression subscale mediated the relationship between alexithymia and the BSI-GSI while ER-cognitive reappraisal subscale did not mediate it. Finally, a series of Mann-Whitney U tests indicated that individuals with high levels of alexithymia differed from those with low levels in all study variables. Conclusion: The results show that ER-suppression subscale has a mediating role between alexithymia and psychological symptoms as well as that alexithymia and emotional regulation are effective factors for predicting psychological symptoms. Finally, the findings imply that emotion regulation is associated with alexithymia and psychological symptoms and contribute to the development these factors. © 2019, Istanbul Universitesi. Çocuk ve ergenlerde risperidon kullanımı ile karaciğer toksisitesi: Literatür taraması
Risperidone is a second generation anti-psychotic drug that is commonly preferred in the treatment of schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bipolar disorders. Risperidone-associated hepatic adverse effects have long been investigated and continues to be unclear. In this review, our aim is to establish the possible hepatic adverse effects linked to risperidone treatment in children and adolescent in terms of severities and reversibility. We performed literature search via electronic databases (PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library) in August 2019. Risperidone treatment may lead to alterations in liver function test (LFT), mostly asymptomatic and reversible with the discontinuation or normalizes with time. Furthermore, there are few cases reporting risperidone-induced cholestatic hepatitis and immunoallergic hepatitis. Although exact mechanism of action of risperidone on liver remains unknown, there are growing evidences that link alterations of fatty acid biosynthesis to hepatic adverse effects. We recommend physicians to take basal LFT prior to risperidone treatment and monitor LFT during treatment. Additionally, physicians should be aware that most alterations at LFT associated with risperidone use are asymptomatic and reversible. However, more comprehensive studies investigating risperidone-associated hepatic adverse effects should be performed to reach a definitive outcome. © 2020, Cyprus Mental Health Institute. Olanzapine in the treatment of anorexia nervosa: a systematic review
Anorexia nervosa, with the highest mortality rate among psychiatric diseases, is characterized by low body mass index, fear of weight gain, and disturbed body image. Even though multiple drugs have been proposed for the treatment of anorexia nervosa, current treatment modalities include nutritional support and psychotherapy. In this study, our aim is to analyze the efficiency and possible adverse effects of olanzapine, an atypical anti-psychotic drug, in the treatment of anorexia nervosa. The studies investigating the efficiency and possible adverse effects of olanzapine in anorexia nervosa have been searched by using 3 databases (Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library). DerSimonian-Laird random effects meta-analyses have been used in the statistical analysis. Effect of olanzapine treatment in accordance with the duration and dosage of drug have been analyzed by the determination of 95% confidence intervals (pvalue < 0.05 is considered as statistically significant). Despite the presence of some contradictory studies, olanzapine treatment has been found beneficial in anorexia nervosa. In addition, analysis reveals that statistically significant beneficial effect of olanzapine treatment is used at high doses and for short duration. Possible side effects include neuroleptic malignant syndrome, hypoglycemia, and heart block in patients suffering from anorexia nervosa. Even though there is obvious need for more comprehensive further studies, current literature favors olanzapine treatment. The efficiency of olanzapine is considered to be related to changes in dopaminergic and serotonergic system in anorexic patients both in terms of neurotransmitter levels and receptor activity
Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation: A Recently Approved Treatment Approach in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with its high prevalence is a growing area of concern and research, whereas exact underlying pathophysiology remains unknown. Behavioral therapy and multiple medications include methylphenidate, atomoxetine, and amphetamines while trigeminal nerve stimulator (TNS) is the first medical device in ADHD with FDA approval. The aim of this article is to evaluate the latest studies in this field

The Emergence of Depression and Anxiety Disorder in a Patient Following Bariatric Surgery : A Case Report
Psychiatric comorbidities are commonly encountered in obese patients admitted for bariatric surgery among which major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder are the most common types. Although most studies demonstrate a significant reduction in psychiatric complaints at postoperative follow-up, the relationship or mechanism of such effect is not definitive. We report the emergence of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder in a 57-year old female patient at sixth-month follow-up with no family history of psychiatric disorder or preoperative psychiatric disorder. Symptomatic control has been achieved with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor therapy. Hereby, we recommend close psychiatric follow-up of bariatric surgery candidates at pre and postoperative periods
