Amorphous thin film growth: theory compared with experiment
Experimental results on amorphous ZrAlCu thin film growth and the dynamics of
the surface morphology as predicted from a minimal nonlinear stochastic
deposition equation are analysed and compared. Key points of this study are (i)
an estimation procedure for coefficients entering into the growth equation and
(ii) a detailed analysis and interpretation of the time evolution of the
correlation length and the surface roughness. The results corroborate the
usefulness of the deposition equation as a tool for studying amorphous growth

On Pebble Automata for Data Languages with Decidable Emptiness Problem
In this paper we study a subclass of pebble automata (PA) for data languages
for which the emptiness problem is decidable. Namely, we introduce the
so-called top view weak PA. Roughly speaking, top view weak PA are weak PA
where the equality test is performed only between the data values seen by the
two most recently placed pebbles. The emptiness problem for this model is
decidable. We also show that it is robust: alternating, nondeterministic and
deterministic top view weak PA have the same recognition power. Moreover, this
model is strong enough to accept all data languages expressible in Linear
Temporal Logic with the future-time operators, augmented with one register

Spin-orbiton and quantum criticality in FeSc2S4
In FeSc2S4 spin-orbital exchange competes with strong spin-orbit coupling,
suppressing long-range spin and orbital order and, hence, this material
represents one of the rare examples of a spin-orbital liquid ground state.
Moreover, it is close to a quantum-critical point separating the ordered and
disordered regimes. Using THz and FIR spectroscopy we study low-lying
excitations in FeSc2S4 and provide clear evidence for a spin-orbiton, an
excitation of strongly entangled spins and orbitals. It becomes particularly
well pronounced upon cooling, when advancing deep into the quantum-critical
regime. Moreover, indications of an underlying structureless excitation

Helicoidal magnetic order in a clean copper oxide spin chain compound
We report susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements
on NaCuO, a spin-1/2 chain compound isostructural to LiCuO,
which has been extensively investigated. Below 13 K, we find a long-range
ordered, incommensurate magnetic helix state with a propagation vector similar
to that of LiCuO. In contrast to the Li analogue, substitutional
disorder is negligible in NaCuO. We can thus rule out that the helix is
induced by impurities, as was claimed on the basis of prior work on
LiCuO. A spin Hamiltonian with frustrated longer-range exchange
interactions provides a good description of both the ordered state and the

Untangling the Conceptual Isssues Raised in Reydon and Scholz’s Critique of Organizational Ecology and Darwinian Populations
Reydon and Scholz raise doubts about the Darwinian status of organizational ecology by arguing that Darwinian principles are not applicable to organizational populations. Although their critique of organizational ecology’s typological essentialism is correct, they go on to reject the Darwinian status of organizational populations. This paper claims that the distinction between replicators and interactors, raised in modern philosophy of biology but not discussed by Reydon and Scholz, points the way forward for organizational ecologists. It is possible to conceptualise evolving Darwinian populations providing the inheritance mechanism is appropriately specified. Branch water uptake and redistribution in two conifers at the alpine treeline
During winter, conifers at the alpine treeline suffer dramatic losses of hydraulic conductivity, which are successfully recovered during late winter. Previous studies indicated branch water uptake to support hydraulic recovery. We analyzed water absorption and redistribution in Picea abies and Larix decidua growing at the treeline by in situ exposure of branches to δ2H-labelled water. Both species suffered high winter embolism rates (> 40–60% loss of conductivity) and recovered in late winter (< 20%). Isotopic analysis showed water to be absorbed over branches and redistributed within the crown during late winter. Labelled water was redistributed over 425 ± 5 cm within the axes system and shifted to the trunk, lower and higher branches (tree height 330 ± 40 cm). This demonstrated relevant branch water uptake and re-distribution in treeline conifers. The extent of water absorption and re-distribution was species-specific, with L. decidua showing higher rates. In natura, melting snow might be the prime source for absorbed and redistributed water, enabling embolism repair and restoration of water reservoirs prior to the vegetation period. Pronounced water uptake in the deciduous L. decidua indicated bark to participate in the process of water absorption
Reconfiguration of Dominating Sets
We explore a reconfiguration version of the dominating set problem, where a
dominating set in a graph is a set of vertices such that each vertex is
either in or has a neighbour in . In a reconfiguration problem, the goal
is to determine whether there exists a sequence of feasible solutions
connecting given feasible solutions and such that each pair of
consecutive solutions is adjacent according to a specified adjacency relation.
Two dominating sets are adjacent if one can be formed from the other by the
addition or deletion of a single vertex.
For various values of , we consider properties of , the graph
consisting of a vertex for each dominating set of size at most and edges
specified by the adjacency relation. Addressing an open question posed by Haas
and Seyffarth, we demonstrate that is not necessarily
connected, for the maximum cardinality of a minimal dominating set
in . The result holds even when graphs are constrained to be planar, of
bounded tree-width, or -partite for . Moreover, we construct an
infinite family of graphs such that has exponential
diameter, for the minimum size of a dominating set. On the positive
side, we show that is connected and of linear diameter for any

Science Models as Value-Added Services for Scholarly Information Systems
The paper introduces scholarly Information Retrieval (IR) as a further
dimension that should be considered in the science modeling debate. The IR use
case is seen as a validation model of the adequacy of science models in
representing and predicting structure and dynamics in science. Particular
conceptualizations of scholarly activity and structures in science are used as
value-added search services to improve retrieval quality: a co-word model
depicting the cognitive structure of a field (used for query expansion), the
Bradford law of information concentration, and a model of co-authorship
networks (both used for re-ranking search results). An evaluation of the
retrieval quality when science model driven services are used turned out that
the models proposed actually provide beneficial effects to retrieval quality.
From an IR perspective, the models studied are therefore verified as expressive
conceptualizations of central phenomena in science. Thus, it could be shown
that the IR perspective can significantly contribute to a better understanding
