    Higher Spins Without (Anti-)de Sitter

Can the holographic principle be extended beyond the well known AdS/CFT correspondence? During the last couple of years there has been a substantial amount of research trying to find answers for this question. In this work we provide a review of recent developments of three-dimensional theories of gravity with higher-spin symmetries. We focus in particular on a proposed holographic duality involving asymptotically flat spacetimes and higher spin extended bms3\mathfrak{bms}_3 symmetries. In addition we also discuss developments concerning relativistic and nonrelativistic higher spin algebras. As a special case Carroll gravity will be discussed in detail.Comment: 35 pages, 3 figures; Invited contribution to a special issue of Universe on Higher Spin Gauge Theories edited by Andrea Campoleoni and Nicolas Boulanger; v2: corrected minor typos and added references; v3: corrected minor typos, matches published versio

    Canonical Charges in Flatland

In this series of lectures we give an introduction to the concept of asymptotic symmetry analysis with a focus on asymptotically flat spacetimes in 2+1 dimensions. We explain general ideas of quantizing gauge theories and then apply these ideas to gravity both in the metric as well as the Chern-Simons formulations. This enables one to compute the asymptotic symmetries of given gravitational configurations that in turn act as the basic underlying symmetries of a possible dual quantum field theory in the context of holography. We also briefly elaborate on the concept of "soft hair" excitations of black holes in this context.Comment: 37 pages; v2: added reference

Enhanced Asymptotic Symmetry Algebra of 2+1 Dimensional Flat Space

In this paper we present a new set of asymptotic boundary conditions for Einstein gravity in 2+1 dimensions with vanishing cosmological constant that are a generalization of the Barnich-Comp{\`e}re boundary conditions gr-qc/0610130. These new boundary conditions lead to an asymptotic symmetry algebra that is generated by a bms3\mathfrak{bms}_3 algebra and two affine u^(1)\hat{\mathfrak{u}}(1) current algebras. We then apply these boundary conditions to Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) and determine how the presence of the gravitational Chern-Simons term affects the central extensions of the asymptotic symmetry algebra. We furthermore determine the thermal entropy of solutions obeying our new boundary conditions for both Einstein gravity and TMG.Comment: 10 pages; v2: minor typos corrected & added reference

Spectral Flow in 3D Flat Spacetimes

In this paper we investigate spectral flow symmetry in asymptotically flat spacetimes both from a gravity as well as a putative dual quantum field theory perspective. On the gravity side we consider models in Einstein gravity and supergravity as well as their "reloaded" versions, present suitable boundary conditions, determine the respective asymptotic symmetry algebras and the thermal entropy of cosmological solutions in each of these models. On the quantum field theory side we identify the spectral flow symmetry as automorphisms of the underlying symmetry algebra of the theory. Using spectral flow invariance we then determine the thermal entropy of these quantum field theories and find perfect agreement with the results from the gravity side. In addition we determine logarithmic corrections to the thermal entropy.Comment: 42 pages; v2: added minor clarifications, matches published versio

Most general flat space boundary conditions in three-dimensional Einstein gravity

We consider the most general asymptotically flat boundary conditions in three-dimensional Einstein gravity in the sense that we allow for the maximal number of independent free functions in the metric, leading to six towers of boundary charges and six associated chemical potentials. We find as associated asymptotic symmetry algebra an isl(2)_k current algebra. Restricting the charges and chemical potentials in various ways recovers previous cases, such as BMS_3, Heisenberg or Detournay-Riegler, all of which can be obtained as contractions of corresponding AdS_3 constructions. Finally, we show that a flat space contraction can induce an additional Carrollian contraction. As examples we provide two novel sets of boundary conditions for Carroll gravity.Comment: 23 pp, invited for CQG BMS Focus Issue edited by Geoffrey Compere, v2: added minor clarifications and ref

Warped Black Holes in Lower-Spin Gravity

We provide a simple holographic description for a warped conformal field theory (WCFT) at finite temperature. To this end we study the counterpart of warped anti-de Sitter black holes in three dimensions using a lower-spin sl(2,R)⊕u(1)\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})\oplus\mathfrak{u}(1) Chern-Simons theory proposed by Hofman and Rollier. We determine the asymptotic symmetries, thermal entropy and holographic entanglement entropy and show that all these quantities are in perfect agreement with the expectations from the dual WCFT perspective. In addition we provide a metric interpretation of our results which naturally fits with our analysis in the Chern-Simons formulation.Comment: 33 pages, 1 figure; v2: corrected minor typos and added references; v3: added a section, references and corrected minor typos.
