Modern cold forging processes are still using high additive lubricants and phosphate coatings on the pre-materials as lubricant carrier, in some cases in addition with soap. The objective of the research project was the development of hard tool coatings which facilitate, possibly supplemented by an ion beam modification of the outer layer, the substitution of the function of lubricants as far as possible. Basic tests and forging tests under real production conditions were performed. The developed hard tool coatings made it possible for the investigated applications to avoid phosphate lubricant carrier coatings and to reduce lubricant volumes significantly. The use and exploitation of the results are the following economical and ecological advantages: Less requirements on waste management, maintenance of industrial health and safety standards, environmental conservation, safety and storing technology, elimination of phosphate coatings, less spending refining of the forged parts, simplification of following production steps. In surface finishing effective communication between suppliers and customers is influenced by the very high complexity. The information system Rapid Engineering reduces this complexity and will therefore optimize the communication between technical designers and surface finishers. Additionally it functions as an interface between fundamental and practical aspects of development knowledge. The software program consists the two parts quality management (qm) and rapid engineering (re). QM is a data base for storing coating and basic material damages to prevent deposition defects. Rapid Engineering is managing the structured exchange of coating and construction information as well as fundamental and practical knowledge. The following coating processes have been structured and implemented: PVD, CVD, ion implantation, ECD. Multilayers by the following deposition techniques have been developed: ECD+PVD, ECD+CVD, ECD+ion implantation, PVD+ECD, CVD+PVD. Different workpieces have been coated with this layers and properties were characterized by several testing methods.
