Extreme compass and Dynamic Multi-Armed Bandits for Adaptive Operator Selection
The goal of adaptive operator selection is the on-line control of the choice of variation operators within evolutionary algorithms. The control process is based on two main components, the credit assignment, that defines the reward that will be used to evaluate the quality of an operator after it has been applied, and the operator selection mechanism, that selects one operator based on some operators qualities. Two previously developed adaptive operator selection methods are combined here: Compass evaluates the performance of operators by considering not only the fitness improvements from parent to offspring, but also the way they modify the diversity of the population, and their execution time; dynamic multi-armed bandit proposes a selection strategy based on the well-known UCB algorithm, achieving a compromise between exploitation and exploration, while nevertheless quickly adapting to changes. Tests with the proposed method, called ExCoDyMAB, are carried out using several hard instances of the satisfiability problem (SAT). Results show the good synergetic effect of combining both approaches

Inference of proto-neutron star properties in core-collapse supernovae from a gravitational-wave detector network
The next Galactic core-collapse supernova (CCSN) will be a unique opportunity
to study within a fully multi-messenger approach the explosion mechanism
responsible for the formation of neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes.
State-of-the-art numerical simulations of those events reveal the complexity of
the gravitational-wave emission which is highly stochastic. This challenges the
possibility to infer the properties of the compact remnant and of its
progenitor using the information encoded in the waveforms. In this paper we
take further steps in a program we recently initiated to overcome those
difficulties. In particular we show how oscillation modes of the proto-neutron
star, highly visible in the gravitational-wave signal, can be used to
reconstruct the time evolution of their physical properties. Extending our
previous work where only the information from a single detector was used we
here describe a new data-analysis pipeline that coherently combines
gravitational-wave detectors' data and infers the time evolution of a
combination of the mass and radius of the compact remnant. The performance of
the method is estimated employing waveforms from 2D and 3D CCSN simulations
covering a progenitor mass range between 11\, and
40\, and different equations of state for both a network of
up to five second-generation detectors and the proposed third-generation
detectors Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer. Our study shows that it will
be possible to infer PNS properties for CCSN events occurring in the vicinity
of the Milky Way, up to the Large Magellanic Cloud, with the current generation
of gravitational-wave detectors
Towards Autopoietic Computing
A key challenge in modern computing is to develop systems that address
complex, dynamic problems in a scalable and efficient way, because the
increasing complexity of software makes designing and maintaining efficient and
flexible systems increasingly difficult. Biological systems are thought to
possess robust, scalable processing paradigms that can automatically manage
complex, dynamic problem spaces, possessing several properties that may be
useful in computer systems. The biological properties of self-organisation,
self-replication, self-management, and scalability are addressed in an
interesting way by autopoiesis, a descriptive theory of the cell founded on the
concept of a system's circular organisation to define its boundary with its
environment. In this paper, therefore, we review the main concepts of
autopoiesis and then discuss how they could be related to fundamental concepts
and theories of computation. The paper is conceptual in nature and the emphasis
is on the review of other people's work in this area as part of a longer-term
strategy to develop a formal theory of autopoietic computing.Comment: 10 Pages, 3 figure
Recent developments and future trends of industrial agents
The agent technology provides a new way to design and engineer control solutions based on the decentralization of control over distributed structures, addressing the current requirements for modern control systems in industrial domains. This paper presents the current situation of the development and deployment of agent technology, discussing the initiatives and the current trends faced for a wider dissemination and industrial adoption, based on the work that is being carried out by the IEEE IES Technical Committee on Industrial Agents
Self-organisation and psychotherapy
In this paper, which is the result of a qualitative, hermeneutical and documental research, we intend to show how the Cognitive Sciences, since their beginning,
have contributed to the understanding of human beings. We refer to the rationalistic understanding
of the mind (the mind is like a computer system), and also to the non-rationalistic understanding,
which attributes to the mind a cognitive value, immersed in emotions and affections. In addition, according to a constructivist or post-rationalistic understanding, the mind translates meanings, an experience or a personal narrative story. Thus, we present the model of post-rationalistic cognitive therapy of Vittorio Guidano, reflecting on the epistemological
foundations of the Self-Organization Movement, on which it is based. We describe briefly the epistemological principles of the Self-Organization Movement, which give to this model a holistic and explanatory dimension of the process of construction of human identity. This identity can be described as the human beings’ process of self-knowledge, as we are capable of experiencing and at the same time perceiving and evaluating, our own experiences (self-consciousness). The human being acts on intersubjectivity, in a pluralistic world with his peers, sharing experiences and interpreting actions. We also want to illustrate that the matrix of inner functioning of every human being, which allows us to sort this multi-faceted reality in a single personal order, is the emotional bond.(undefined

"Meaning" as a sociological concept: A review of the modeling, mapping, and simulation of the communication of knowledge and meaning
The development of discursive knowledge presumes the communication of meaning
as analytically different from the communication of information. Knowledge can
then be considered as a meaning which makes a difference. Whereas the
communication of information is studied in the information sciences and
scientometrics, the communication of meaning has been central to Luhmann's
attempts to make the theory of autopoiesis relevant for sociology. Analytical
techniques such as semantic maps and the simulation of anticipatory systems
enable us to operationalize the distinctions which Luhmann proposed as relevant
to the elaboration of Husserl's "horizons of meaning" in empirical research:
interactions among communications, the organization of meaning in
instantiations, and the self-organization of interhuman communication in terms
of symbolically generalized media such as truth, love, and power. Horizons of
meaning, however, remain uncertain orders of expectations, and one should
caution against reification from the meta-biological perspective of systems
