Success stories on organic seed production & breeding

This booklet is meant to inspire farmers, breeders and seed producers to devote resources to producing organic seed. It illustrates eight success stories from five European countries. Case studies cover the whole spectrum of farming from vegetable to fruit, cereal to potato and represent various stages of seed breeding, production and multiplication as well as a range of business set-ups: from individual farms to private seed companies, through non-profit organisations and cooperatives

The State of Organic Seed in Europe

This booklet aims at supporting the expansion, both horizontal and vertical, of the European market for organic seed. Organic farmers need seed bred specifically to withstand the local and environmental conditions without the use of external, synthetic inputs. The size of the demand, however, does not justify the investment needed, when left entirely to market forces. This booklet estimates the potential market for organic seed in the EU and any challenges to its full development, and particularly the role played by the current derogation process for use of conventional untreated seed. Also analysed is the lack and inconsistency of information for farmers on what is available and how it meets their needs. In particular, the study compares and identifies gaps in the use of national databases and annual reports on derogations across Europe, and how these can be modified to provide stronger policy incentives to the market. Suppliers were interviewed on technical and economic challenges to seed production and farmers were involved in discussions on how organic seed is acquired and used

Pulmonary Artery Catheter Monitoring in Patients with Cardiogenic Shock: Time for a Reappraisal?

Cardiogenic shock represents one of the most dramatic scenarios to deal with in intensive cardiology care and is burdened by substantial short-term mortality. An integrated approach, including timely diagnosis and phenotyping, along with a well-established shock team and management protocol, may improve survival. The use of the Swan-Ganz catheter could play a pivotal role in various phases of cardiogenic shock management, encompassing diagnosis and haemodynamic characterisation to treatment selection, titration and weaning. Moreover, it is essential in the evaluation of patients who might be candidates for long-term heart-replacement strategies. This review provides a historical background on the use of the Swan-Ganz catheter in the intensive care unit and an analysis of the available evidence in terms of potential prognostic implications in this setting
